Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 3 of the 36 other read-later and bookmark apps we grade

Glasp is a highlighter for web articles, PDFs and YouTube transcripts that collects highlights and notes in a personal library, where they can be tagged, searched and exported to note-taking apps. Highlights are public by default, and people can follow other readers to see what they have marked. AI features summarize YouTube videos, web pages and PDFs and transcribe audio files, with usage allowances that rise on the paid plans.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Glasp, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: install the extension and highlight on the page you're already reading.

The report card

Best for highlighting articles and YouTube in the open

Glasp is a highlighter for web pages, PDFs and YouTube transcripts whose highlights sit on a public page by default, with AI summaries of videos and articles. SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyDPro is $12.50 a month billed yearly, nearly four times this category's $3.33 middle and well past the $7.99 where its dearest tenth starts, and keeping your highlights private needs it. Unlimited is $30 a month. Students get 40% off yearly Pro; subscriptions are marked non-refundable.
Free plan and trialCUnlimited highlights for free, with exports and the daily Notion sync, but the cap is an unusual one: every highlight is public unless you pay. The AI is rationed too, at 3 basic YouTube summaries a day and 20 chat credits a month.
FeaturesBIt covers the whole job of collecting what you read: highlights with notes and tags on web pages, PDFs and YouTube transcripts that stay marked on the page, AI summaries, audio transcription, chat with a PDF, imports from Kindle, Readwise, Instapaper and Pocket, and four export formats.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: install the extension and highlight on the page you're already reading. The phone apps add a reader view and a read-later library on top.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, a browser extension and iPhone and Android apps, with highlights flowing out to Notion, Obsidian, Readwise, Roam Research and Logseq and in from Kindle. No desktop app, which is what holds it to a B.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Glasp you could make: highlights and read later. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 26 of the 36 other read-later and bookmark apps grade higher. It costs $150 a year.

What you could make

  • Highlights and read later: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Speech turned into text you can trust.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Notion, Obsidian and Readwise among them, and has an API.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Glasp’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
