Best for running and testing your own Google Play listing

Google Play Console is where Android apps are published, and it holds the store listing, A/B experiments, up to 50 custom store listings and reports by search term and traffic source. Opening an account costs a one-time $25. But sign-up needs identity checks, new personal accounts must run a 14-day closed test with 12 testers before launch, and there's no keyword research.

Who Google Play Console is for

  • Fits if you publish Android apps or games and want to test which listing converts
  • Works for matching store listings to countries, search keywords or Google Ads campaigns

Who Google Play Console is not for

  • Watch out: new personal accounts need 12 testers opted in for 14 days in a row before going live
  • Watch out: sign-up may ask for a government ID and a card in your legal name, and the fee isn't refunded if checks fail
  • Skip it if you need keyword research or rank tracking, as none is built in
  • Not for you if you ship on the App Store too, as iOS listings live in App Store Connect
  • Watch out: paid apps and in-app sales carry a service fee that varies by region, earnings and product type

Why Google Play Console gets a 2.2

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • AValue for moneyA one-time $25 registration fee covers every Play Console tool, far less than a year of this category's middle subscription ($19 a month). Paid apps and in-app sales carry a service fee, which Google says 97% of developers don't pay.
  • FFree plan and trialNothing free: the $25 fee comes first, and it isn't refunded if your ID or card checks fail.
  • CFeaturesListing experiments, 50 custom store listings by country, keyword or campaign, acquisition reports by search term, review replies and testing tracks. It runs your own Google Play listing fully, but there's no keyword research, rank tracking or rival data.
  • CEase of useNo rating on record. Sign-up may ask for a government ID and a card in your legal name, and new personal accounts must run a closed test with 12 testers for 14 days first.
  • BPlatforms and integrationsThe web console and an Android app, with the Play developer APIs and links to Google Ads and Google Play Billing. It manages Google Play only.

Keep Google Play Console, or make your own?

Keep it

To replace Google Play Console you would be making keyword rankings and popularity scores from both app stores, gathered every day. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It costs $25, paid once.

What you could make

  • Reports: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • Keyword rankings and popularity scores from both app stores, gathered every day.
  • Splitting visitors between versions and telling you which won.
  • A real app for Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Google Ads and Google Play Billing among them, and has an API.

What this rests on. Google Play Console’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.

What is Google Play Console?

Google Play Console is where developers publish and manage their apps on Google Play. Besides releases, testing tracks and quality reports, it holds the store optimization tools: the store listing itself, A/B experiments on its graphics and text, up to 50 custom store listings aimed at countries, search keywords or ad campaigns, and acquisition reports that break visitors down by traffic source and search term. Opening a developer account costs a one-time $25 fee.

Worth knowing

  • Signing up needs a $25 one-time fee and identity checks that may ask for a government ID and a card in your legal name; the fee is not refunded if they fail.
  • Personal accounts created after November 13, 2023 must run a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in for 14 straight days before releasing to production.
  • Paid apps and in-app sales carry a Google Play service fee that varies by region, earnings, product type and install date; Google says 97% of developers pay none.
  • It covers Google Play only; App Store listings are managed in App Store Connect.
