Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 6 of the 14 other tools for selling digital products we grade

Gumroad lets creators sell digital files, courses, memberships and software with license keys from a simple profile page or from buttons on their own site. There is no monthly charge: Gumroad takes a fee on each sale, and since January 2025 it acts as merchant of record, collecting and remitting sales tax and VAT. Buyers can also find products through its Discover marketplace.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Gumroad, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for a first digital product with no monthly bill

Once you're selling steadily, a flat-fee store costs less.

  2. 2

    It is free

Gumroad has no paid plan at all. No monthly fee. Gumroad keeps 10% + $0.50 of each direct sale plus card processing (2.9% + $0.30), or a flat 30% on sales made through its Discover marketplace.

  3. 3

    It runs on 3 platforms

    Web, iOS and Android.

  4. 4

    Profile store or embedded checkout

Build a storefront with Gumroad's page editor on a custom domain, or embed its checkout and follow button on a site you already have.

  5. 5

    Memberships and subscriptions

Charge monthly, quarterly, twice a year or yearly, or a fixed number of payments, with members keeping access to a content library while subscribed.

  6. 6

    Merchant of record

Gumroad collects and remits sales tax, VAT and GST on sales where it has an obligation, so sellers have no tax settings to manage.

  7. 7

    A 2.6 GPA, above 6 of 14

That is against the other tools for selling digital products we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  8. 8

    Keep it

Gumroad is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

The report card

Best for a first digital product with no monthly bill

Gumroad is the easy way to put a file, course or membership on sale: no monthly fee, a simple profile store, and sales tax handled for you as merchant of record. The price of that is a big cut, 10% + 50¢ of every direct sale and 30% through Discover. Once you're selling steadily, a flat-fee store costs less.

ToolGPA report cardGumroadGraded Oct 18, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyDNo monthly fee, but Gumroad keeps 10% + 50¢ of each direct sale: $100 on $1,000, plus 50¢ an order. Card processing of 2.9% + $0.30 comes on top and isn't counted. That's in this category's dearest tenth, though it does handle sales tax for you.
Free plan and trialANothing to pay until you sell, with every feature, unlimited products and no cap a normal person would reach. The fee comes out of each sale instead, and the value grade counts that.
FeaturesBDownloads, memberships, courses, license keys, pay-what-you-want, email broadcasts and workflows, affiliates and a Discover marketplace. Physical goods aren't allowed, but that's outside this job, so nothing's missing from the core.
Ease of useCNo App Store rating on record. You build a profile store with a page editor and set up products on the web; the iPhone and Android apps only track sales and open purchases.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, iPhone and Android, with Stripe, PayPal, Zapier, Discord and Circle, plus a checkout you can embed on your own site. No desktop app, which an A needs.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Gumroad is for

  • Great if you're testing your first product and don't want a monthly bill
  • Handy when you sell software and need a license key sent with each sale
  • Good for sellers who never want to think about sales tax or VAT

Who it is not for

  • Pricey if you sell steadily, as 10% + 50¢ of every sale soon costs more than a flat fee
  • Skip it if you sell physical goods, which Gumroad doesn't allow
  • Not for you if you count on marketplace sales, since Discover takes a flat 30%

Good to know

Good for

  • Creators testing a first product who want no monthly bill
  • Sellers who want sales tax and VAT handled for them
  • Software makers who need license keys with each sale

Worth knowing

  • Gumroad keeps 10% + $0.50 of every direct sale plus 2.9% + $0.30 card processing; Discover marketplace sales cost a flat 30%.
  • Physical goods are not allowed: Gumroad is for digital products, memberships and services only.
  • Payouts go out by direct deposit or PayPal depending on the seller's country.
  • The mobile apps track sales and open purchases, but accounts and products are set up on the web.

Part 02 · Pricing

What it costs

Every plan, the free plan, ways to pay less and how prices have moved

Free

No paid plan at all

Gumroad is free to use.

That's in this category's dearest tenth, though it does handle sales tax for you.
From our grade for value for money
  • Direct sales

    $0

No subscription. The seller pays 10% + $0.50 of each sale through a profile or direct link, plus card processing of 2.9% + $0.30 or PayPal fees.

  • Discover marketplace

    $0

Sales to new customers who find you through Gumroad's Discover marketplace carry a flat 30% fee, which includes processing.

The free plan

No monthly fee. Gumroad keeps 10% + $0.50 of each direct sale plus card processing (2.9% + $0.30), or a flat 30% on sales made through its Discover marketplace.

Ways to pay less

  • Other savings

Lower fee above $20,000 in monthly sales

Once paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales that month cost 5% + $0.50 instead of 10% + $0.50; it resets each month.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

Gumroad is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces.

What you could make

  • Digital downloads: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • Selling as the merchant of record, so sales tax and VAT are handled everywhere.
  • Newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox.
  • Every click and sale traced back to the right partner.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Stripe, PayPal and Zapier among them.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Gumroad’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
