Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 2 of the 27 other AI research tools we grade
Humata is a web app for asking questions about your own documents. You upload files or folders, or import a website, and it answers in a chat with citations that link back to the relevant passages. Plans are metered by the number of pages uploaded each month, and the team features include roles, folder permissions and SAML single sign-on.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Humata, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The one thing to watch is the page meter, since anything over your allowance is billed per page.
- 1
Best for small teams asking questions of shared files
Humata answers questions across your uploaded files or whole folders, with links back to the passage, and the $9.99 Expert plan covers up to 3 people.
- 2
Paid plans start at $9.99 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $9.99 per month, billed monthly (covers up to 3 users).
- 3
There is a free plan
1 user and 60 free pages a month with basic features. The homepage also limits it to 10 answers.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Chat with your files
Upload files or whole folders and ask questions about them. Each answer cites the relevant sections of the source documents, with highlighted links back into the file.
- 6
Ask All across files
Tick several files or a folder and use Ask All to put one question to all of them at once, for example to compare documents.
- 7
Website import
The From URL option in the upload dialog imports a website so that questions can be asked about its pages.
- 8
A 2.2 GPA, above 2 of 27
That is against the other AI research tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Humata you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for small teams asking questions of shared files
Humata answers questions across your uploaded files or whole folders, with links back to the passage, and the $9.99 Expert plan covers up to 3 people. Everything is metered by the page: 60 a month free, 500 on Expert, then $0.02 a page. OCR for scans, folder permissions and personalized answers wait for Team at $49 a user, it only answers from what you upload, and it's a browser tab with no apps or integrations.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Expert is $9.99 a month and up to 3 of you can share it, the low end here. But it's metered at 500 pages a month, then $0.02 a page, and OCR for scans, folder permissions and personalized answers all wait for Team at $49 a user. Low to start, dear once you need those. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free is 1 user, 60 pages a month and, going by the homepage, 10 answers. That's a paper or two and you've seen how the citations work. A cap you'll hit in an afternoon, in other words. |
| Features | C | It does chat-with-your-documents fully: cited answers that link to the passage, Ask All to put one question to a whole folder, website import, and Grounded, Balanced and Creative modes. That's a smaller job than this category's, though. It only answers from what you upload. |
| Ease of use | B | No App Store rating on record, so this rests on the listing: a web app where you upload a folder, tick the files and ask, with nothing to install or connect. The one thing to watch is the page meter, since anything over your allowance is billed per page. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | A browser tab and nothing else: no phone app, no desktop app, no extension, and the listing names no integrations with other apps at all. There is an API for importing documents and asking questions, and an embed for your own page, but neither gets Humata off the one place it runs. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Humata is for
- Fits if two or three of you want to share one $9.99 plan
- Works for companies that want document Q&A on their own website through the embed or API
Who it is not for
- Tight if you read a lot, since Expert has 500 pages a month and each extra page is $0.02
- Skip it if your files are scans, because OCR needs the Team plan at $49 a user a month
- Not for you if you want a tool that finds papers, as this only answers from what you upload
- Too light for real work on the free plan: 1 user, 60 pages a month and, going by the homepage, 10 answers
- Watch out: the billing FAQ mentions a Student plan, but the pricing page doesn't list it or a price
Good to know
Good for
- Asking questions across many long PDFs and getting cited answers
- Small teams of up to three people sharing one $9.99 plan
- Companies that want to embed document Q&A on their own website
Worth knowing
- The Free plan is limited to 1 user and 60 pages a month, and the homepage also caps it at 10 answers.
- Pages beyond a plan's monthly allowance are billed per page: $0.02 on Expert and $0.01 on Team.
- OCR for scanned text, department and folder permissions and response personalization need the Team plan.
- The billing FAQ mentions a Student plan, but the pricing page does not list it or show a price.

That's a smaller job than this category's, though.

- Admins invite members, assign admin or member roles, group people into teams and restrict access to folders. Department and folder permissions start at the Team plan.
- Embeds and API
- A chat view for a file or folder can be embedded in a web page, with white labeling on Enterprise. An API covers document import, conversations and questions.

Part 04 · Standing
Where it stands
Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own
2/27
Other AI research tools it is graded above
Humata's GPA of 2.2 is higher than 2 of the 27 other AI research tools we grade, and level with 3.
It stands best on ease of use (B, above 13 of 27) and worst on platforms and integrations (C, above 0).
Its paid plans start at $9.99 a month, against a middle price of $10 for the category: 8 of the 20 others that charge start lower.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.3 out of 4. 9 tools score higher and cost less.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Humata you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 22 of the 27 other AI research tools grade higher. It costs $119.88 a year.
What you could not
- An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
- A library of papers and sources to search.
- Citation records for millions of papers.
- An API that other software can build on.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: single sign-on and roles and permissions.
- Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
What this rests on. Humata’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
