Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 25 of the 43 other habit trackers we grade
I Am Sober is a sobriety tracking app for iPhone, Apple Watch and Android. It counts sober days for one or more addictions, asks for a pledge each morning and a review each evening, and connects users with communities of people quitting the same thing at the same stage. The app is free to use, and a Sober Plus subscription adds private groups, an app lock, cloud backups and more trackers.
To get you started, here are 10 things to know about I Am Sober, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Setup is one step: the date and time you stopped.
- 1
Best for counting sober days alongside others

- 6

- 7
Milestones and community
Milestones from 1 day to 1 month and beyond are tracked, and communities group people with the same addiction at the same stage of sobriety.
- 8
Refunds: no set window

The report card
Best for counting sober days alongside others
I Am Sober is a quitting tracker: it counts your sober days, asks for a pledge each morning and a review each evening, and groups you with people quitting the same thing at the same stage. Most of that is free. But a second addiction, private groups, the app lock and cloud backups need Sober Plus at $9.99 a month, the yearly shows at two prices, and it's phone and watch only. It won't help you build new routines.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | Most of what you'd use costs nothing. Sober Plus is $9.99 a month, three times this category's middle, and the yearly shows at both $29.99 and $39.99. Cloud backups are on the paid side. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Someone quitting one thing gets the day counter, the morning pledge and evening review, milestones, the savings calculator, the withdrawal timeline and the community for free. A second addiction, private groups, the app lock and cloud backups need Sober Plus. |
| Features | C | It does the quitting job: time sober to the minute, pledges and reviews, milestones, money and time saved, trigger patterns from your daily recaps, and a withdrawal timeline built from other members' reports. That's a smaller job than this category's, and it won't help you build a routine. |
| Ease of use | A | 4.9 on the App Store from about 188,000 ratings, an A on our ladder. Setup is one step: the date and time you stopped. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | iPhone, Apple Watch and Android, and no further: no web or desktop tracker, and nothing it connects to. If your phone is lost and you're on the free plan, there's no cloud backup either. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who I Am Sober is for
- Fits if you're quitting alcohol, nicotine, drugs or another habit and want a day counter
- Works for people who want a community of others at the same stage of quitting
Who it is not for
- Too light for general habit tracking, as it's built around quitting, not building routines
- Skip it if you want your tracker on a computer, since it's iPhone, Apple Watch and Android only
- Not for you if you need cloud backups, an app lock or a second addiction without paying, as they need Sober Plus
- Pricey if you pay monthly: Sober Plus is $9.99 a month, three times this category's middle
- Watch out: the App Store lists the 12-month plan at both $29.99 and $39.99, plus three $0.99 items
Good to know
Good for
- People quitting alcohol, nicotine, drugs or another habit who want a day counter

Worth knowing
- Creating a group, locking the app with Touch ID or Face ID, cloud backups and extra trackers need Sober Plus.
- The App Store lists the 12-month Sober Plus subscription at both $29.99 and $39.99, so check the price shown in the app.
- Mobile only: apps are listed for iPhone, Apple Watch and Android, with no web or desktop tracker.
- The App Store also lists three $0.99 in-app purchases besides the subscription.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of I Am Sober you could make: habit tracking and daily notes. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $119.88 a year.
What you could make
- Habit tracking and daily notes: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- People on the other end: a community of other users. No app builder makes those.
- Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app.
What this rests on. I Am Sober’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
Part 05 · Refunds

Getting your money back, getting out, and getting help
What happens once you have paid: whether you can get your money back, how to leave, and how to reach a person when something goes wrong. Each is graded from I Am Sober’s own terms and help pages.
Refunds and cancelling
Ordinary · checked Oct 18, 2026
Sober Plus is sold through the App Store and Google Play, so the makers cannot refund you and say so: you ask Apple or Google and they decide. The sensible part is what happens next. Cancelling stops the next charge but leaves Sober Plus running to the end of the period, and the FAQ promises your sobriety dates, pledges and notes stay on the phone either way. That is how every store-billed app works, and it is a C.
- Refund window
- No set window
- How you cancel
- In the app store
- Getting your money back
The FAQ says refunds are managed by the App Store or Google Play and not by I Am Sober directly, and points you to each store's own refund page. The terms add that if the app fails to meet the warranty you may notify Apple, which will refund the purchase price, and that the company shares data about how you used purchased content with Apple to help it decide refund requests. No window of its own is stated.
Stated on iamsober.com- How to cancel I Am Sober
The FAQ says subscriptions are managed by the App Store or Google Play rather than inside the app, and links Apple's and Google's own pages for managing a subscription. It adds that cancelling stops future charges but leaves Sober Plus working until the end of the current billing period.
Stated on iamsober.com- What you keep afterwards
The FAQ says you lose nothing by cancelling: sobriety dates, history, pledges, reviews, notes and all tracking data stay on the device. What stops is the automatic cloud backup, and you can still make manual backups from Settings, then Data Backups. A group you created as a subscriber is not deleted but goes read-only until the subscription is active again.
Stated on iamsober.com- Renewals
The subscription is billed by the App Store or Google Play and runs until cancelled there, with the FAQ saying cancelling only stops future charges. It says a free trial is usually offered but can be taken only once, which is why some people are charged straight away on a second attempt. No reminder before a renewal is mentioned.
Stated on iamsober.com
In your favour
- Most of the app is free, and the makers say Sober Plus is entirely optional.
- Cancel and you keep Sober Plus until the end of the period you have paid for.
- Your sobriety dates, pledges, notes and history stay on the phone after a subscription ends.
- Free users can still make manual backups, so the data is not held hostage to the subscription.
Watch out for
- I Am Sober cannot refund you at all: Apple or Google takes the decision.
- No refund window is stated anywhere on its own pages.
- The free trial can only be taken once, so a second sign-up is charged immediately.
- Automatic cloud backups stop when the subscription does, leaving the data only on your device.
Customer support
Ordinary · checked Oct 18, 2026
A small team, a long and genuinely useful FAQ, and one email address when that is not enough. There is also a debug report you can fire off from inside the app, which saves a lot of back and forth. What there isn't is any promise: no hours, no reply time, no chat and no phone. For a free app with an optional subscription that is the ordinary deal, and a C.
Ways to get help
Email
The FAQ gives one support email address and uses it for account lockouts, billing questions, verification problems and group ownership transfers. For a locked account it says it can only help if you write from the address on the account.
Stated on iamsober.comHelp inside the app
Settings, then About, then Debug Report collects your device, operating system, app version and app state and opens an email to the support team. The FAQ tells you to send one when sign-in or a purchase is misbehaving.
Stated on iamsober.comHelp centre
A single long FAQ page covers accounts and login, the Sober Plus subscription, community rules, age verification, groups, backups and device transfer, tracking, notifications, account deletion and troubleshooting. It is free to read.

- When people answer
Its pages do not say.
- How fast it says it replies
Its pages do not say.
- What depends on your plan
Its pages do not say.
In your favour
- Free users can email support too: nothing on the FAQ limits it to Sober Plus.
- The debug report sends your device and app details with the message, so you need not describe them.
- The FAQ is unusually thorough and answers the billing and cancellation questions head on.
Watch out for
- No hours and no reply time are stated anywhere.
- There is no live chat and no phone line, only email and the in-app debug report.
- Lose access to the email address on the account and the FAQ says the account cannot be recovered.
- Anything to do with the charge itself goes to Apple or Google rather than to the team.
What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: the I Am Sober FAQ, in particular its sections on the Sober Plus subscription, cancelling, refunds, data and backups and troubleshooting, the terms of service covering Apple's role in refunds, and the home page. No separate help centre or contact page was found on the site. Nobody here cancelled a plan, asked for a refund or contacted its support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA.
