Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 21 of the 27 other AI research tools we grade

Inciteful is a free web tool that uses citations, not keywords, to find related research. Paper Discovery builds a citation network around one or more seed papers and ranks the papers in it by importance and similarity, and the Literature Connector shows how two papers are linked through the literature. It draws on open data covering more than 240 million papers and 2 billion citations, and results export to reference managers.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Inciteful, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Give it one paper and it ranks the network around it, or two and it shows how they connect.

The report card

Best for free citation mapping

Inciteful finds related research through citations rather than keywords and is free, with no paid plans. Give it one paper and it ranks the network around it, or two and it shows how they connect. It's kept going by one developer who may look for donations, the keyword filters only search titles, a big graph takes 3 to 4 minutes, it writes no summaries, and it's web only with no API.

ToolGPA report cardIncitefulGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAFree, with no paid plans at all, and the site says the core tools always will be. Four tools here are free. The A is for what comes with it: an index of 240 million papers and 2 billion citations, with nothing held back for a paid tier.
Free plan and trialAFree outright, and there's no cap you'd run into: Paper Discovery, the Literature Connector, the filters, the SQL panel and reference-manager export are all in. Worth knowing that the about page describes a single developer covering the server costs, who may look for donations or a sponsor.
FeaturesCIt does citation mapping fully: a network ranked by PageRank and by link-prediction similarity, the shortest citation paths between two papers, and a SQL panel underneath. But that's a smaller job than this category's, and the listing names its own gap — keyword filters search titles, as abstracts aren't available.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record, and the listing points to a learning curve: a dashboard of ranked tables you filter by citation distance and year, help pages that exist to explain Paper Discovery and the Literature Connector, and a SQL panel behind it. Big graphs take 3 to 4 minutes.
Platforms and integrationsCWeb only, with no phone app, no extension and no API on the listing. You can start from a BibTeX file and push what you find to Zotero or Mendeley, but that's an export rather than somewhere it plugs in. One place to use it, so a C.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Inciteful is for

  • Fits if you want citation mapping at no cost
  • Works for researchers whose topic sits between two fields and who want to see how they link up

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want AI summaries or answers, as this maps and ranks papers and leaves the reading to you
  • Not for you if you search by topic words, since the keyword filters only look at titles
  • Watch out: the about page describes a single developer covering the server costs, who may seek donations or a sponsor
  • Tight if you start from a heavily cited paper, as those graphs can pass a million papers and take 3 to 4 minutes
  • Too light for use on a phone or from your own tools: it's web only, with no app, extension or API

Good to know

Good for

  • Finding the papers most similar to one you already know
  • Interdisciplinary researchers tracing how two fields connect
  • Citation mapping at no cost
  • Power users who want to query a citation graph with SQL

Worth knowing

  • Keyword filters search paper titles only; the documentation says abstracts are not available.
  • Graphs for heavily cited papers can pass a million papers and take 3 to 4 minutes to build.
  • The about page describes a single developer who covers the server costs and may seek donations or a sponsor.
  • The tool now sits at incitefulmed.com/academic, next to Inciteful Med, a separate medical research product.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

Inciteful is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces. It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 21 of the 27 other AI research tools we grade.

What you could not

  • A library of papers and sources to search.
  • Citation records for millions of papers.
  • It plugs into other products, Zotero, Mendeley and OpenAlex among them.

What this rests on. Inciteful’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
