Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 4 of the 34 other SEO browser extensions we grade
Inspect Canonical is a small free Chrome extension from Nick LeRoy Consulting that reports on the canonical tag of the page you are on. It shows one of three statuses: green when the page points to itself, amber when it points to another URL, and red for problems such as a noindex tag, a missing or duplicated canonical, or one placed outside the head.
To get you started, here are 7 things to know about Inspect Canonical, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No rating on record, but nothing to set up: the icon turns green, amber or red on the page you open.
- 1
Best for checking a page's canonical tag at a glance
That's the whole tool: titles, headings and other tags need another extension, it doesn't crawl a site, and it's Chrome only.
- 2
It is free
Inspect Canonical has no paid plan at all. Free to install from the Chrome Web Store, which lists no in-app purchases for it.
- 3
Color-coded status
Green means the canonical points to the current URL, amber that it points elsewhere, and red that something is wrong.
- 4
Seven checks in order
Tests for a noindex robots tag, a canonical outside the head, no canonical, several canonicals, a missing href, a different URL, then a correct self-reference.
- 5
Noindex conflicts
Flags pages carrying a robots noindex tag, since the listing notes canonical tags are then ignored.
- 6
A 2.8 GPA, above 4 of 34
That is against the other SEO browser extensions we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 7
Keep it
Inspect Canonical is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

The report card
Best for checking a page's canonical tag at a glance
Inspect Canonical runs seven checks on the canonical tag of the page you're on and shows green, amber or red, catching noindex conflicts, missing or doubled tags and ones outside the head, for free. That's the whole tool: titles, headings and other tags need another extension, it doesn't crawl a site, and it's Chrome only.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free from the Chrome Web Store, which lists no in-app purchases, from Nick LeRoy Consulting. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Free outright: all seven checks and the colour-coded status, with no account and nothing to upgrade to. |
| Features | D | One narrow function: the canonical tag and noindex, tested in seven steps with a link to the source or the canonical URL. Titles, headings and every other tag need another tool. |
| Ease of use | B | No rating on record, but nothing to set up: the icon turns green, amber or red on the page you open. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Chrome only, so computers only, with no integrations. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Inspect Canonical is for
- Fits if you check canonicals page by page while browsing a site
- Works for developers confirming canonical tags after a template change
Who it is not for
- Too light for on-page checks, as titles, headings and other tags need another extension
- Skip it if you want a site-wide check, since it reports on one page and doesn't crawl
- Not for you if you browse in Firefox, Safari or Edge, as it's listed for Chrome only
- Watch out: the developer hasn't identified itself as a trader, so EU consumer rights don't apply
Good to know
Good for
- SEOs checking canonicals while browsing a site
- Spotting pages that point their canonical somewhere unexpected
- Developers confirming canonical tags after a template change
Worth knowing
- It checks the canonical tag and noindex only; titles, headings and other tags need another tool.
- It reports on the page in front of you and does not crawl a site.
- It is listed for Chrome only.
- The developer has not identified itself as a trader, so EU consumer rights do not apply, as the store listing notes.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Inspect Canonical is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 18 of the 34 other SEO browser extensions grade higher.
What you could make
- Schema markup: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A crawler that checks every page of a site.
What this rests on. Inspect Canonical’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
