Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.2

GPA, above 64 of the 69 other writing tools we grade

JotterPad is a Markdown and Fountain editor for writing books, screenplays, academic papers and articles on Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac and the web. It turns plain-text markup into formatted documents through templates, and exports to Word, PDF, Final Draft and ePub. The Pro Cloud subscription adds sync with Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and iCloud and unlocks the apps on every platform.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about JotterPad, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: type plain markup and it shows formatted, then a template does the layout.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for Markdown and Fountain writing on every device

The free version watermarks PDFs and doesn't sync, there's no Windows or Linux app, and the vendor says nothing is refunded.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $2.50 a month when paid by the year

As its pricing page puts it: $29.99 per year on the App Store; $3.33 per month billed annually on the web.

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Free with limited access: Markdown editing, importing .md, .fountain and .fdx files, Unsplash images, and printing Markdown to PDF with a watermark. No cloud sync.

  4. 4

    It runs on 4 platforms

    Web, macOS, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Markdown, Fountain and LaTeX editing

Documents are written in lightweight markup and shown formatted as you type. LaTeX support is labeled beta, and Fountain files need a paid plan.

  6. 6

Templates for papers, books and scripts

Templates lay a document out as an APA or MLA paper, a novel, a screenplay, a report, a letter or presentation slides when it is printed to PDF.

  7. 7

    Cloud sync and offline work

Pro Cloud syncs files with Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive, plus iCloud on Mac and iOS. The apps keep working offline and sync once back online.

  8. 8

    A 3.2 GPA, above 64 of 69

That is against the other writing tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

The plain part of JotterPad you could make: Markdown, long-form writing and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card

Best for Markdown and Fountain writing on every device

JotterPad is a Markdown and Fountain editor that lays plain text out as a novel, screenplay or APA paper, on Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac and the web. Pro Cloud is $29.99 a year on the US App Store or $3.33 a month on the web, so the price depends on where you buy. The free version watermarks PDFs and doesn't sync, there's no Windows or Linux app, and the vendor says nothing is refunded.

ToolGPA report cardJotterPadGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAPro Cloud is $29.99 a year on the US App Store, which is $2.50 a month, under 60% of this category's cheaper quarter at $5.00. On the web it's $3.33 a month billed annually, and $6.99 if you pay monthly on the App Store. Lifetime is $159.99.
Free plan and trialCFree covers Markdown editing, file import and Unsplash pictures. But every PDF comes out watermarked and nothing syncs, and Fountain and LaTeX files, Word and Final Draft export and blog publishing are all behind the paywall. That's a wall, not a limit.
FeaturesBMarkdown and Fountain shown formatted as you type, templates that lay a document out as an APA or MLA paper, a novel or a screenplay, BibTeX citations, export to Word, PDF, Final Draft, HTML and ePub, publishing to Ghost, WordPress or Tumblr, and plugins for diagrams. LaTeX is still labelled beta.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: type plain markup and it shows formatted, then a template does the layout. Working out what to buy is the fiddly bit, with two separate purchases called Pro on the App Store alone.
Platforms and integrationsAAndroid, iPhone, iPad, Mac and a web editor, so every device type, syncing through Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or iCloud and publishing to WordPress, Ghost and Tumblr. No Windows or Linux app, mind: those computers get the browser.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who JotterPad is for

  • Fits if you draft in Markdown or Fountain and move between a phone, a tablet and a computer
  • Works for students formatting APA or MLA papers with BibTeX citations

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're staying free: PDFs are watermarked, nothing syncs, and Fountain, LaTeX, Word and Final Draft export are paid
  • Skip it if you want a Windows or Linux app, as neither is listed and those computers get the browser
  • Not for you if you might want your money back, because the vendor says canceled subscriptions and the lifetime purchase are not refunded
  • Watch out: prices change with where you buy, and the App Store's two purchases named Pro are one-platform licenses without sync
  • Watch out: LaTeX support is still labeled beta

Good to know

Good for

  • Writers who draft in Markdown or Fountain across a phone, a tablet and a computer
  • Students formatting APA or MLA papers with BibTeX citations
  • Screenwriters who need Final Draft (.fdx) export

Worth knowing

  • Cloud sync, Fountain and LaTeX files, Word and Final Draft export and blog publishing need a paid plan, and free PDFs carry a watermark.
  • No Windows or Linux app is listed: there are apps for Android, iPhone, iPad and Mac, and a web editor for other computers.
  • Prices depend on where you buy: the website lists $3.33 a month billed annually, the US App Store $29.99 a year or $6.99 a month.
  • The vendor says canceled subscriptions and the lifetime purchase are not refunded.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of JotterPad you could make: Markdown, long-form writing and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.2 is higher than 64 of the 69 other writing tools we grade. It costs $29.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Markdown, long-form writing and templates: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Citation records for millions of papers.
  • Apps for macOS, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Google Drive, Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. JotterPad’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
