Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 15 of the 21 other web hosts we grade
Kinsta is a managed WordPress host whose plans are priced by the number of sites and by monthly visits, bandwidth or a mix of resources. Every plan includes a Cloudflare firewall and CDN, daily backups, staging, free migrations, malware removal, an application monitoring tool and a REST API, managed from the MyKinsta dashboard.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Kinsta, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Kinsta's team moves your sites over for free, which helps, but there are plans, limits and add-ons to get your head around.
- 1
Best for managed WordPress with an API and monitoring
Plans cap visits, and going over brings overage fees.
- 2
Paid plans start at $30 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $30 per month for 1 site, billed annually ($35 billed monthly).
- 3
You can try it first
First month free on Launch, Single and WP 2 plans for new customers, then a 30-day money-back guarantee
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Firewall, CDN and malware removal
Sites sit behind a Kinsta firewall and Cloudflare with enterprise DDoS protection, are served from a CDN with edge caching, and get malware cleaned up at no charge.
- 6
Daily backups and staging
Sites are backed up every 24 hours, kept for 14 days on entry plans, and have one-click staging. Hourly backups and premium staging are paid add-ons.
- 7
Kinsta API
A REST API creates sites, reads site details, clears cache and restarts PHP, so routine work can be scripted.
- 8
A 2.2 GPA, above 15 of 21
That is against the other web hosts we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Kinsta you would be making an engine that recognises new malware as it appears. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for managed WordPress with an API and monitoring
Kinsta is managed WordPress for businesses that have outgrown shared hosting: Cloudflare in front, malware cleaned up free, staging, free migrations and its own tool for finding slow plugins. It costs managed-host money, $700 over two years for one site. Plans cap visits, and going over brings overage fees.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Graded against the other managed WordPress hosts, not cheap shared hosting. Launch is $350 a year after a free first month, so two years cost $700, about $29.17 a month, toward the dear end of that group. Each extra site is $30 a month. |
| Free plan and trial | D | The first month is free on Launch, Single and WP 2 for new customers, but you sign up to a paid plan to get it, so it works like a trial that needs payment details. After that there's a 30-day money-back guarantee. |
| Features | B | Daily backups, one-click staging, a Cloudflare firewall and CDN, free malware removal, unlimited free migrations, SSO and its own APM tool for slow plugins. Hourly backups and Redis are paid add-ons, but the managed WordPress job is all there. |
| Ease of use | C | No app store rating to go on. Kinsta's team moves your sites over for free, which helps, but there are plans, limits and add-ons to get your head around. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A web dashboard with no app on record, plus a REST API for creating sites and clearing cache, and backups to Amazon S3 or Google Cloud Storage. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Kinsta is for
- Great if your business site has outgrown shared hosting
- Handy when an agency team needs staging, user roles and an API
- Good for WooCommerce shops that want WordPress run for them
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you add sites, at $30 a month for each one beyond the plan
- Tight if traffic spikes, since visits over the cap bring overage fees
- Skip it if you want hourly backups included, as they're a paid add-on
Good to know
Good for
- Business sites that have outgrown shared hosting
- Agencies and teams that need staging, user roles and an API
- WooCommerce shops that want a host managing WordPress for them
Worth knowing
- Plans cap monthly visits, bandwidth and storage; going over keeps the site online but adds overage fees, with alerts at 80% and 100%.
- Each extra site is $30 a month and each extra 20 GB of disk is $20 a month.
- A visit is each unique IP address in a 24-hour period, and visits to all sites on a plan count toward one monthly limit.
- Redis caching, hourly backups, external backups and premium staging are paid add-ons.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Kinsta you would be making an engine that recognises new malware as it appears. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.2 is higher than 15 of the 21 other web hosts we grade. It costs $360 a year.
What you could not
- An engine that recognises new malware as it appears.
- Servers kept running, patched and backed up for you.
- It plugs into other products, WordPress, WooCommerce and Cloudflare among them, and has an API.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: single sign-on.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Kinsta’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
