Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 9 of the 51 other email apps we grade
Kiwi for Gmail is a desktop application for Mac and Windows that takes Gmail and the rest of Google Workspace out of the browser. Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Calendar and Chat open in their own windows, and several Gmail or Workspace accounts can be used side by side, up to nine on the top plan. It works only with Google accounts and is sold as a subscription from Zive, Inc.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Kiwi for Gmail, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No rating on record, and nothing to learn: it is Gmail, in a window.

macOS and Windows.
- 5

- 7
Focus-Filtered Inbox

The report card
Best for Gmail as a desktop app, with several accounts
Kiwi for Gmail puts Gmail in its own app on Mac and Windows, with Docs, Sheets, Calendar and Chat in their own windows and several Google accounts side by side. It's Google accounts only, there's no phone app or web version, and you pay from $4 a month for something that's free in a browser tab. The pricing page doesn't make clear whether prices are monthly or yearly, and Starter covers 1 account.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Starter shows as $4 a month for 1 account, and the listing couldn't confirm whether that's the monthly or the yearly rate. Running several accounts, half the reason to buy it, is Pro at $6 or Power Pro at $8: the middle of this category, for what a browser tab does free. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. There's a 7-day risk-free trial, which the pricing page states for the yearly plans, and nothing on record says whether you hand over a card to start it. |
| Features | C | It does its one job: Gmail and Workspace as a desktop app, with Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar and Chat in their own windows, several accounts side by side and an XO assistant for drafting. That's a smaller job than a mail client's, and the Focus-Filtered Inbox and Tabbed Workspaces are rationed across plans. |
| Ease of use | B | No rating on record, and nothing to learn: it is Gmail, in a window. Install it, sign in with Google, and your accounts sit side by side with no signing in and out or juggling browser profiles. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Computers only. Mac and Windows, with one license covering both, and no phone app or web version at all. It works with Gmail and Google Workspace accounts and nothing else, though Power Pro adds extensions such as Boomerang, Grammarly and Zoom. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Kiwi for Gmail is for
- Fits if Gmail is open all day and you'd rather it had its own app than a browser tab
- Works for people with several Gmail or Workspace accounts who are tired of signing in and out
Who it is not for
- Skip it if any of your email isn't Gmail or Google Workspace, as other providers aren't supported
- Not for you if you wanted something for your phone, because it's Mac and Windows only
- Tight if you're on Starter with more than one account, since it covers just 1, and Pro stops at 3
- Watch out: the pricing page doesn't say whether prices are monthly or yearly, and the 7-day trial is stated for yearly plans
- Pricey if you want Tabbed Workspaces or extensions like Boomerang and Grammarly, which need Power Pro at $8
Good to know
Good for
- Heavy Gmail users who want email out of the browser
- People juggling several Gmail or Google Workspace accounts
- Google Workspace users who prefer Docs and Sheets in desktop windows
Worth knowing
- It works only with Gmail and Google Workspace accounts; other email providers are not supported.
- It is a desktop app for Mac and Windows only; the site offers no mobile app or web version.
- Starter is limited to 1 account and Pro to 3; using up to 9 accounts and Tabbed Workspaces needs Power Pro.
- Prices sit behind a Monthly/Annually switch on the pricing page, and the 7-day trial is stated for yearly plans.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Kiwi for Gmail you would be making an email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 33 of the 51 other email apps grade higher. It costs $48 a year.
What you could not
- An email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail.
- Filters that read every message as it arrives.
- A real app for macOS and Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, Gmail, Google Drive and Google Docs among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Kiwi for Gmail’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
