Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 40 of the 51 other AI agents we grade

Langflow is an open-source, Python-based tool for building AI agents, retrieval (RAG) applications and other LLM workflows by connecting components on a visual canvas. Flows are tested in a built-in playground, then run through an API, exported for Python apps or exposed as MCP servers. It is MIT licensed and free to run with Langflow Desktop, Docker or a Python package, and IBM sells an optional support subscription for teams that run it themselves.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Langflow, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Desktop is the shortest route for one person on a Mac or Windows PC, and no rating is on record.

The report card

Best for building agents on a free, open-source canvas

Langflow is a free, open-source canvas for building AI agents: drag components on, test them in a playground, then run the flow through an API or as an MCP server. There's no hosted version to sign up for, so you run it yourself and bring your own model keys. Nothing is on record about schedules or team use, there's no email support unless you pay IBM, and on Intel Macs the PyTorch components are limited or missing.

ToolGPA report cardLangflowGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAIt costs nothing: the whole application is MIT licensed, and the only thing on sale is optional IBM support at a custom price, which buys support and not software. Model access and the machine it runs on are yours to pay for.
Free plan and trialAThe full application is free whichever way you run it, Langflow Desktop, the Docker image or the Python package, with nothing held back for a paid tier. You supply the computer and the model keys.
FeaturesCIt covers the building job: components dragged onto a canvas, a playground to test in, agents that call whole flows as tools, flows published through an API or as MCP tools, and Python you can edit. That's a smaller job than the category's: nothing on record about schedules, triggers or team use.
Ease of useDYou host it yourself: the docs cover only installs you look after, Langflow Desktop, Docker, the Python package or Kubernetes, and you bring your own model keys. Desktop is the shortest route for one person on a Mac or Windows PC, and no rating is on record.
Platforms and integrationsBA desktop app for Mac and Windows, Docker or Python anywhere else, and you work in a browser. It connects to OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama, Pinecone, Notion and Slack, with an API and MCP in both directions. No phone app is listed.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Langflow is for

  • Fits if you're a developer sketching out agent or RAG apps on a canvas
  • Works for turning a flow into an API endpoint or an MCP tool for another app

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want to sign up and build in the cloud, as the docs cover only installs you run yourself
  • Not for you if you expect email support, because help comes through GitHub and the community unless you pay IBM
  • Tight if you're on an Intel Mac, where the components that depend on PyTorch are limited or unavailable
  • Watch out: Langflow Desktop needs macOS 13 or Windows and lacks the Shareable Playground and Voice Mode
  • Too light for scheduled runs, triggers or team use, as none are on record

Good to know

Good for

  • Developers prototyping agent and RAG applications on a canvas
  • Teams that want to self-host an MIT-licensed builder
  • Turning flows into API endpoints or MCP tools for other applications

Worth knowing

  • The docs cover only self-managed installs: Desktop, Docker, the Python package or Kubernetes. The homepage mentions a free cloud account but links no sign-up.
  • Langflow Desktop is for macOS 13 or later and Windows, and lacks some features such as the Shareable Playground and Voice Mode.
  • On Intel Macs, the ML and AI components that depend on PyTorch are limited or unavailable.
  • The team gives no individual support by email: help comes through GitHub and community channels unless you subscribe to IBM Elite Support.

Other AI agents it is graded above

Langflow's GPA of 2.8 is higher than 40 of the 51 other AI agents we grade, and level with 6.

It stands best on free plan and trial (A, above 46 of 51) and worst on ease of use (D, above 0).

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Langflow you would be making an AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 40 of the 51 other AI agents we grade. Langflow is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.

What you could make

  • Templates: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • An AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows and Linux that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, OpenAI, Anthropic and Ollama among them, and has an API.

What this rests on. Langflow’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
