Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
1.8
GPA, above 0 of the 69 other writing tools we grade
Lex is a browser-based word processor with AI editing built in. Its homepage and pricing page now say that Lex is no longer accepting new customers and that existing accounts will keep working as usual. For those accounts, Ask Lex is a chat panel that gives feedback on a draft using an AI model the writer picks, and Checks marks line-level edits for brevity, grammar and readability inside the document.
To get you started, here are 7 things to know about Lex, taken from its own pages and our grades.
If you don't already have an account, look at one of the alternatives.
- 1
Best for people who already have a Lex account
Track changes is still marked coming soon, and there's no desktop app.
- 2
It runs on Web
Web.
- 3
Ask Lex
A chat panel for feedback, rewrites and brainstorming on the open document. Highlighting text, or tagging @Lex in a comment, asks about one passage. The AI model can be switched.
- 4
Checks
Runs line edits for brevity, grammar, readability and more, shown as highlights in the document. Clicking one shows the suggested edit and the reason for it.
- 5
Custom prompts and context
Saved prompts can be reused in Ask Lex and Checks and shared with others. Style guides and knowledge bases give the AI a voice to follow and background to draw on.
- 6
A 1.8 GPA, above 0 of 69
That is against the other writing tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 7
Keep it
To replace Lex you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for people who already have a Lex account
Lex is a browser word processor with an AI editor built in, but its site says it's no longer accepting new customers, and the pricing page shows no plans or prices. Existing accounts keep working. Track changes is still marked coming soon, and there's no desktop app. If you don't already have an account, look at one of the alternatives.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | No price at all is public. The pricing page says pricing is for existing users only and asks you to log in, and the homepage says Lex is no longer taking new customers. With nothing to set against the $8.33 a month this category charges in the middle, it lands where every unpriced tool lands. |
| Free plan and trial | F | Nothing free you can start. No free plan and no trial are listed, and sign-ups are closed, so there is no way in. Accounts that already exist keep working as usual. |
| Features | C | The basics of a word processor with AI editing on top: Ask Lex for feedback from a model you choose, Checks for line edits, Versions and Rewind for going back, plus live co-editing and comments. Track changes is still marked coming soon on the homepage, and that is a real gap in a tool built around editing. |
| Ease of use | C | No rating on record, and this is a web app you sign into and then feed style guides, saved prompts and knowledge bases to get the most out of. Plain typing is easy; the setup around it is not nothing. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web only, in desktop and mobile browsers, but with a documented API that can create, list and update documents and a Kit integration, which is what lifts it off the bottom. No desktop app is listed and the iOS app is early access for Pro subscribers. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Lex is for
- Works for people who already have a Lex account, since those keep working as usual
- Fits if you're already on Lex and want AI feedback on a draft, not text written for you
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you don't already have an account, because Lex is no longer accepting new customers
- Not for you if you want a tool you can price up today, as its plans are shown to existing users only
- Not for you if you need track changes, which the homepage still marks as coming soon
- Watch out: it's web only, with no desktop app, and the iOS app is early access for Pro subscribers
Good to know
Good for
- Existing account holders, whose accounts keep working as usual
- Writers already on Lex who want AI feedback on a draft instead of generated text
Worth knowing

- Lex runs in a desktop or mobile browser. An iOS app is offered to Pro subscribers as early access, and no desktop app is listed.
- Track changes is marked as coming soon on the homepage.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Lex you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 65 of the 69 other writing tools grade higher.
What you could make
- Documents: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
- Grammar checking as you type, wherever you type.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- It plugs into other products, Kit among them, and has an API.
What this rests on. Lex’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
