Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
3.0
GPA, above 64 of the 79 other project management tools we grade
Linear is an issue tracking and product planning tool built for software teams. Work is organized into issues, time-boxed cycles, projects and higher-level initiatives, and most views can switch between a list and a board. An agent platform and the Linear Agent assistant are included on every plan, including the free one.
To get you started, here are 10 things to know about Linear, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It's made for software and not much else, the phone app is thin and there's no Linux app, so other kinds of teams should look elsewhere.
- 1
Best for software teams tracking issues
Linear is an issue tracker for software teams, built around issues, cycles and projects, and the free plan lets your whole team in.
- 2
Paid plans start at $10 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $10 per user / month, billed yearly.
- 3
There is a free plan
Unlimited members, 2 teams and 250 issues, with the agent platform and Linear Agent included.
- 4
It runs on 5 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.
- 5
Issues and cycles
Every piece of work is tracked as an issue. Cycles are recurring, fixed-length periods that a team plans a set of issues into.
- 6
Projects and initiatives
Projects collect the issues behind one deliverable, and initiatives group several projects under a larger company objective.
- 7
List and board layouts
Nearly every issue view can switch between a list and a kanban-style board, with optional swimlanes for an extra grouping.
- 8
Refunds: no set window
No refunds, and Linear says so plainly: cancel a yearly plan in month two and you've still paid for twelve. That's how most subscription software works, so it's a C.
- 9
A 3.0 GPA, above 64 of 79
That is against the other project management tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 10

The report card
Best for software teams tracking issues
Linear is an issue tracker for software teams, built around issues, cycles and projects, and the free plan lets your whole team in. But that free plan stops at 250 issues and 2 teams, there's no trial of the paid plans, and private teams, guests and Insights need Business at $16 a person. It's made for software and not much else, the phone app is thin and there's no Linux app, so other kinds of teams should look elsewhere.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Basic is $10 a person a month on yearly billing, the dear edge of this category rather than the middle, and it buys 5 teams and unlimited issues. The parts a growing company wants, private teams, guests, Insights and Asks, are on Business at $16, double what most tools here charge. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Unlimited members, but 250 issues and 2 teams is a wall a busy team hits in weeks, and there is no trial of the paid plans on top. Treat free as a long look round rather than somewhere to settle. |
| Features | B | Issues, cycles, projects, initiatives, triage, list and board layouts, and Linear Agent on every plan including free. That covers a software team's tracking. For the rest of this category plenty is missing: no time tracking, no budgets, no resource planning, and Insights waits for Business. |
| Ease of use | A | 4.83 on the App Store from 2,179 ratings, the top band. It follows the issues-and-sprints setup engineering teams already use, though anyone outside software has that to learn, and the phone app is the thin part. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, with GitHub, GitLab, Slack, Figma, Sentry, Zendesk, Intercom and Notion on the integrations page and an API behind them. The gap is Linux: the download page has no app for it. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Linear is for
- Fits if your team ships software and plans in issues, sprints and roadmaps
- Works for teams handing work to coding agents like Cursor, Codex or Copilot
Who it is not for
- Skip it if your team isn't building software, since it's all issues and cycles, with no time tracking or budgets
- Tight if you'll pass 250 issues or 2 teams on the free plan, and there's no trial of the paid plans
- Pricey if you need private teams, guests or Insights, which start on Business at $16 a person
- Not for you if you want to do real work from your phone, as reviewers report lost edits and fewer features
- Watch out: there's no Linux app, and SAML and SCIM are Enterprise only, priced on request and billed yearly
Good to know
Good for
- Software teams planning work in issues, cycles and projects
- Small teams: the free plan has no member limit
- Teams that hand issues to coding agents
Worth knowing
- The Free plan stops at 250 issues and 2 teams.
- Private teams, guests, Linear Insights and Linear Asks need the Business plan at $16 per user / month.
- SAML and SCIM are limited to Enterprise, which is billed annually only.
- The download page lists macOS, Windows, iOS and Android apps but no Linux app.

What most people miss: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches
7
Things most people miss, each from its own help pages
The things about Linear that are easy to miss until they cost you: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches at renewal or when you leave. Each one is from Linear’s own pages, linked beside it.
Read on Oct 17, 2026. Read from Linear's docs (creating issues, deleting and archiving issues, workspaces, billing and plans, Triage Intelligence) on 17 October 2026. Not tried out: these tips are what its own pages say.
- 1
Shortcut
Press C for a new issue, or type linear.new in the address bar
C opens a new issue from anywhere in Linear, and Option+C (Alt+C on Windows) starts one from a template. In a browser, linear.new opens a new issue while you're signed in, and the link can pre-fill the title, team, priority, assignee and labels. Handy for a bookmark or a "report a bug" button.
linear.app - 2
Easy to miss
Let people file issues by email, no Linear account needed
Turn on Team settings, General, Create issues by email and the team gets an intake address. A template can have its own address too, so its properties are applied. Senders get no confirmation and no updates, and attachments are capped at 25 MB.
linear.app - 3
Easy to miss
Deleted an issue by mistake? You have 30 days to get it back
Press Cmd+Z (Ctrl+Z) straight away, or open the team's archives with G then X and go to the Recently deleted issues tab. Select the issue and press # to restore it. After 30 days deleted issues are removed for good and can't be brought back.
linear.app - 4
Setting
Choose the workspace's data location at the start: it can't change
Linear's workspace docs say you can't change a workspace's data residency once it has been created. If your company has rules about where its data is kept, settle that when you set the workspace up, not after a year of issues have piled up in it.
linear.app - 5
Renewal
Suspend people who've left before the next bill
Linear bills for every unsuspended member. On monthly billing, people added are charged from the next month, and anyone removed mid-month earns no credit for the rest of it. On yearly billing, each person added is charged pro rata for the rest of the year on a true-up invoice, which is charged automatically.
linear.app - 6
Privacy
Linear says it doesn't train AI models on your workspace
Its Triage Intelligence docs say Linear does not use your data to train its own models, and the AI providers it shares data with may use it only to run the features, without permission to train on it. Admins switch Triage Intelligence on in Settings, AI, and a team can turn it off.
linear.app - 7
Leaving
Deleting a workspace gives admins 48 hours to change their minds
Deletion starts with a code emailed to the admin who asks for it, and then every admin is told. Any admin can cancel from the same settings page within 48 hours. After that the workspace and all its data are permanently deleted, so export your issues first.

64/79
Other project management tools it is graded above
Linear's GPA of 3.0 is higher than 64 of the 79 other project management tools we grade, and level with 8.
It stands best on ease of use (A, above 75 of 79) and worst on free plan and trial (C, above 4).
Its paid plans start at $10 a month for each person, against a middle price of $8 for the category: 49 of the 74 others that charge start lower.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 3.7 out of 4. Nothing scores higher for less, though at least one tool matches that score at a lower price.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Linear you could make: issue tracking, tasks and kanban boards. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 64 of the 79 other project management tools we grade. It costs $120 a year.
What you could make
- Issue tracking, tasks and kanban boards: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, GitHub, GitLab and Slack among them, and has an API.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Linear’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
Part 06 · Refunds
After you pay
Getting your money back, getting out, and getting help
What happens once you have paid: whether you can get your money back, how to leave, and how to reach a person when something goes wrong. Each is graded from Linear’s own terms and help pages.
Refunds and cancelling
Ordinary · checked Oct 12, 2026
No refunds, and Linear says so plainly: cancel a yearly plan in month two and you've still paid for twelve. That's how most subscription software works, so it's a C. The door itself is easy. An admin cancels in the billing settings, the plan runs to the end of the period, and nothing gets deleted.
- Refund window
- No set window
- How you cancel
- Yourself, in settings
- Getting your money back
The billing docs say there are no refunds for cancelling mid-subscription, and suggest starting on a monthly plan if you are unsure about a full year. On a yearly plan, suspending a user creates a pro-rated credit that goes toward future invoices and is not refunded. The terms call payments non-refundable, except that unused prepaid fees are returned if you end the agreement over a breach Linear has not fixed.
Stated on linear.app- How to cancel Linear
Workspace admins cancel a subscription from Settings, then Administration, then Billing. The change takes effect at the end of the subscription period: the billing month on a monthly plan, the billing year on a yearly one. The terms also allow giving notice by email to its billing address, which Linear has to confirm in writing.
Stated on linear.app- What you keep afterwards
The terms say a cancelled subscription is downgraded to the free version, and the billing docs that nothing is deleted: a workspace with over 250 issues can no longer create new ones, and all members become admins. The terms add that the data of a free account left unused for a year or more may be deleted. A separate docs page says admins can export a workspace's issue data as CSV.
Stated on linear.app- Renewals
The terms say recurring charges are taken without further authorisation until the customer ends the agreement, and that a customer may choose not to renew by changing the subscription in the account or by email. The billing docs describe a yearly plan as renewing the following year. Neither mentions a reminder before a renewal or a refund after one.
Stated on linear.app
In your favour
- An admin cancels in the billing settings, with nobody to email.
- Nothing is deleted when you cancel. The workspace carries on as a free one.
- On a yearly plan, suspending a user earns a pro-rated credit against later invoices.
- Admins can export the workspace's issues as a CSV file.
Watch out for
- No refund for cancelling mid-subscription, on monthly or yearly billing.
- It renews by itself, and neither the terms nor the docs promise a reminder first.
- Over 250 issues? Once the paid plan ends you can't create any more.
- The terms let Linear delete a free account's data if it sits unused for a year or more.
Customer support
Ordinary · checked Oct 12, 2026
You can write to Linear through a form or by email, and there's a Slack community and proper docs. But no page says when the team works or how quickly it replies. Priority support and an account manager are ticked for Enterprise only. That's the usual arrangement, so it's a C.

- What depends on your plan
The pricing page's comparison table ticks Priority support, an account manager and an uptime SLA for Enterprise only. Free, Basic and Business are ticked for none of the three.
Stated on linear.app
In your favour
- There's a form and an email address, so you can pick how you write in.
- The contact form takes screenshots and videos, which saves a round of back and forth.
- The docs spell out billing, cancelling and exporting in plain terms.
Watch out for
- No page says when support works or how fast it aims to reply.
- Priority support is ticked for Enterprise only, so Basic and Business pay and still get the ordinary queue.
- An account manager and an uptime SLA are Enterprise-only too.
What these two grades rest on. Read on 12 October 2026: Linear's terms of service, its docs on billing and plans, exporting data and workspaces, its pricing page, and its contact and support pages.
