Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 25 of the 43 other habit trackers we grade
Loop Habit Tracker is a free, open-source Android app for building long-term habits. Rather than relying only on streaks, it calculates a strength score for each habit, so a few missed days after a long run do not wipe out progress. It has no ads, in-app purchases or habit limits, works offline without an account, and can export data to CSV or SQLite.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Loop Habit Tracker, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Each habit gets a strength score instead of an all-or-nothing streak, so missed days lower it without resetting it.

Habit score
A formula based on exponential smoothing rates the strength of each habit. Every repetition raises the score, and a missed day lowers it without resetting progress.

Flexible schedules
Besides daily habits, schedules such as 3 times per week or every other day are supported. A day can be marked as skipped, which leaves the score and streak unchanged.
- 6
Reminders
Each habit can have its own reminder at a chosen time of day, and a habit can be checked or dismissed directly from the notification.

The report card
Best for a free Android habit tracker with no ads
Loop Habit Tracker is a free Android app with no ads, no in-app purchases, no habit limit and no account. Each habit gets a strength score instead of an all-or-nothing streak, so missed days lower it without resetting it. But it's Android only, the current F-Droid build needs Android 9, there's no sync between devices, backups mean exporting a file, and it only tracks habits you're building, not ones you're quitting. iPhone users should look elsewhere.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free: no ads, no in-app purchases, no habit limit, GPLv3 on Google Play and F-Droid. This category's cheapest quarter starts at $1.99 a month, and Loop charges nothing. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Everything is free and there's no cap to walk into: unlimited habits, every feature, widgets, graphs and export. No account either, so nothing to sign up to and nothing to cancel. |
| Features | C | The strength score rates a habit by exponential smoothing, so one bad week dents it instead of resetting it, with flexible schedules, skips, widgets, graphs and CSV or SQLite export. But the listing names two gaps: no account or built-in sync, and only positive habits, so quitting has to be reworded. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but nothing to set up: install it, add a habit, tick it, and you can check or dismiss from the notification. The one idea to get your head round is the score, which isn't the streak you're used to. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | One operating system. Android, and the FAQ says flatly there's no iOS version and that App Store apps using the name are unauthorised copies. No sync, so no second device either, and Tasker is the only thing it talks to. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Loop Habit Tracker is for
- Fits if you're on Android and want a tracker with no cost, no ads and no account
- Works for people who want their habit data out as CSV or SQLite
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you have an iPhone, as there's no iOS version and App Store apps using the name are unauthorized copies
- Not for you if you want habits on more than one device, since there's no account or built-in sync
- Too light for habits you're trying to quit, since only positive habits are tracked
- Watch out: backups rely on Android's backup service or a file you export yourself
- Tight if your phone is older, as version 2.3.1 needs Android 9.0 or newer
Good to know
Good for
- Android users who want a habit tracker with no cost, ads or account
- People who prefer a strength score to an all-or-nothing streak
- Anyone who wants to export habit data to CSV or SQLite
Worth knowing
- Android only: the FAQ says there is no iOS version and that App Store apps using the name are unauthorized copies.
- There is no account or built-in sync; backups rely on Android's backup service or a manually exported file.
- Only positive habits are tracked, so a habit to quit has to be rephrased, for example as a smoke-free day.
- Version 2.3.1 on F-Droid requires Android 9.0 or newer.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Loop Habit Tracker is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
What you could make
- Habit tracking: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- A real app for Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- Hooks into the device itself: widgets.
What this rests on. Loop Habit Tracker’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
