Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 19 of the 51 other email apps we grade
Mailspring is a desktop email client for Mac, Windows and Linux with a unified inbox for Gmail, iCloud, Office 365, Fastmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo and other IMAP accounts. The code is open source under the MIT license, and mail syncs directly between the provider and the computer. The app is free with unlimited accounts. A Mailspring Pro subscription lifts the weekly limits on snooze, send later, follow-up reminders, read receipts and link tracking.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Mailspring, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for a free desktop inbox, Linux included
Mailspring is an open-source desktop mail app for Mac, Windows and Linux, and the free version takes unlimited accounts into one inbox with search and mail rules.
- 2
Paid plans start at $7.08 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $8 per month, or $85 per year (Mailspring Pro).
- 3
There is a free plan
Unlimited accounts, unified inbox, search, mail rules, signatures, templates and themes. A free Mailspring ID adds weekly allowances of Pro features, such as 15 snoozes and 5 send-later messages.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
macOS, Windows and Linux.
- 5
Unified inbox
One inbox for Gmail, iCloud, Office 365, Fastmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo and other IMAP accounts. The free version puts no limit on the number of accounts.
- 6
Advanced search
Mailspring indexes mail so that Gmail-style search queries can look through message contents across every connected account.
- 7
Read receipts and link tracking
Notifies you when a recipient opens a message or clicks a link. A free Mailspring ID can track 5 messages a week of each kind, and Pro is unlimited.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 19 of 51
That is against the other email apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Mailspring you would be making an email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for a free desktop inbox, Linux included
Mailspring is an open-source desktop mail app for Mac, Windows and Linux, and the free version takes unlimited accounts into one inbox with search and mail rules. Pro, at $8 a month, only lifts the weekly caps on snooze, send later and tracking. There's no phone app, no Exchange or POP3, the calendar is a read-only preview for Google accounts, there's no lifetime license, and Pro has no premium support.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $8 a month, or $85 a year, the $8.00 middle of this category. All it buys is the lifting of weekly caps on snooze, send later, reminders, receipts and tracking. No one-time or lifetime license is offered, and Pro doesn't include premium support. |
| Free plan and trial | A | The free version is a full mail client with unlimited accounts, a unified inbox, search, mail rules, signatures and templates, and no cap on any of that. A free Mailspring ID adds weekly allowances of Pro: 15 snoozes, 5 send-later messages and 5 tracked ones. |
| Features | C | The basics: one inbox for several accounts, Gmail-style search across all of them, read receipts, link tracking, send later, snooze, reply reminders, translation and a grammar check. The holes are on its own pages: no Exchange or POP3, and a calendar that's a read-only preview for Google accounts. |
| Ease of use | C | No rating on record. It's a desktop app with a familiar layout, but you add each account yourself and the free-plan allowances mean keeping track of how many snoozes and tracked messages you have left this week. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Computers only: Mac, Windows and Linux, but there's no iOS, Android or web version and the docs say the team is focused on the desktop. Mail syncs over IMAP straight from your provider to your machine. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Mailspring is for
- Fits if you're on Linux and want a desktop email app that takes several accounts
- Works for people who want read receipts and link tracking, at 5 a week free or unlimited on Pro
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you read mail on your phone too, as there's no iOS or Android version
- Not for you if your work account is Exchange only, because EWS and ActiveSync aren't supported
- Too light for anyone who needs a working calendar, since it's a read-only preview for Google accounts
- Tight if you stay free, at 15 snoozes, 5 send-later messages and 5 tracked messages a week
- Watch out: there's no lifetime license, and Pro at $8 a month doesn't include premium support
Good to know
Good for
- Linux users who want a modern desktop email client
- People who want a free client with unlimited accounts
- Anyone who wants read receipts and link tracking built into email
Worth knowing
- There is no iOS, Android or web version; the docs say the team is focused on the desktop app.
- Exchange (EWS and ActiveSync) and POP3 are not supported. Microsoft 365 accounts connect over IMAP and SMTP.
- The calendar is a read-only preview for Google accounts; a full calendar is described as coming later.
- No one-time or lifetime license is offered, and Pro does not include premium support.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Mailspring you would be making an email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $85 a year. Mailspring is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could make
- Templates: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- An email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail.
- Apps for macOS, Windows and Linux that stay in step with each other.
- It plugs into other products, Gmail, Office 365 and iCloud among them.
What this rests on. Mailspring’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
