Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 12 of the 17 other accounting and invoicing tools we grade

Manager.io is double-entry accounting software whose desktop edition is free, works offline and has every feature with no limits on data. Businesses that need several users or remote access pay for Manager Cloud, the same software hosted by Manager.io, or run the Server Edition on their own machine. It covers invoicing, purchases, bank reconciliation, inventory, fixed assets, payslips and reports.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Manager.io, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for full double-entry books free on your own computer

It works offline too, which is rare here.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $59 a month

As its pricing page puts it: $59 per month, billed monthly.

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Desktop edition for Windows, Mac and Linux: every feature, no time or usage limits and no ads, for a single user with no remote access.

  4. 4

    It runs on 4 platforms

    Web, Windows, macOS and Linux.

  5. 5

    Sales and purchases

Quotes, orders, invoices, credit notes, delivery notes, late payment fees and billable time on the sales side, with matching purchase documents.

  6. 6

    Bank imports and bank rules

Import bank statements, then let bank rules allocate matching receipts and payments to accounts. Reconcile accounts against statements.

  7. 7

    Inventory and fixed assets

Inventory items, kits and locations, plus fixed and intangible assets with depreciation and amortization entries.

  8. 8

    A 2.8 GPA, above 12 of 17

That is against the other accounting and invoicing tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace Manager.io you would be making live feeds from your bank, which take an agreement with each bank or a service that has them. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for full double-entry books free on your own computer

Manager.io is proper double-entry accounting you download for Windows, Mac or Linux, and the desktop edition is free with every feature and no limits. It works offline too, which is rare here. The catch is that it's one person on one computer, with no live bank feeds and no phone app, and sharing the books means Cloud at $59 a month.

ToolGPA report cardManager.ioGraded Oct 17, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAThe desktop edition is free, with every feature and no limit on data, and it's a program anyone can download and run. You only pay for Cloud, $59 a month or $590 a year, when several people need the books, and that covers unlimited users and businesses.
Free plan and trialAFree with every feature, no time limit, no usage cap and no ads. The only things it won't do are let a second person in or open the books away from that one computer.
FeaturesCQuotes through to delivery notes, bank rules and reconciliation, inventory, fixed assets with depreciation and payslips. The listing names the gaps: bank transactions come in by importing statements, not live feeds, and payslips are records only, with no payroll tax filing.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record. You download it and start, but it's double-entry books where you import bank statements and set up bank rules yourself, so there's a bit to learn.
Platforms and integrationsCWindows, Mac and Linux, plus a web version on Cloud or on a server you run. There's no phone app, the browser has to do on a phone, and the listing names no integrations.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Manager.io is for

  • Great if you want full books without a subscription and don't mind importing statements
  • Handy when you'd rather keep your accounts on your own computer, offline
  • Good for accountants who keep lots of client businesses on one flat-priced Cloud account

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want bank transactions to flow in by themselves, as statements are imported
  • Not for you if you want an app on your phone, since Cloud runs in a phone browser only
  • Pricey if just two of you need the books, as that means Cloud at $59 a month or your own server

Good to know

Good for

  • Sole traders who want full double-entry books without a subscription
  • Businesses that want their accounts on their own computer, usable offline
  • Accountants who keep many client businesses on one flat-priced cloud server

Worth knowing

  • The free desktop edition is single-user; several users or remote access need the paid Cloud Edition or a self-run Server Edition.
  • The Server Edition page names no price, and Manager.io does not install it for you.
  • There is no phone app; the Cloud Edition is used in a phone or tablet browser.
  • Bank transactions come in by importing statements, and payslips are records only, with no payroll tax filing described.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Manager.io you would be making live feeds from your bank, which take an agreement with each bank or a service that has them. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 12 of the 17 other accounting and invoicing tools we grade. It costs $708 a year.

What you could make

  • Invoicing, expense tracking and reports: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Live feeds from your bank, which take an agreement with each bank or a service that has them.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows and Linux that stay in step with each other.
  • What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.

What this rests on. Manager.io’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
