Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 107 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

Mimiri Notes is an end-to-end encrypted notes app from innonova GmbH in Zürich, built for keeping private notes and credentials and sharing them with people you trust. Notes sit in a tree where any note can hold sub-notes, sync across desktop, mobile and web clients, and keep unlimited version history. Client and server code are open source under GPLv2. The free tier includes 100 MB of storage and up to 2,000 notes.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Mimiri Notes, taken from its own pages and our grades.

You can sign up without an email address, and there's no folder system to learn, just the tree.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for private notes and passwords shared with people you trust

Mimiri Notes is an encrypted notebook for things like the alarm code, the Wi-Fi password or notes shared with a partner, encrypted on your device before they leave it.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $1 a month when paid by the year

As its pricing page puts it: $1.20 per month, or $12 per year (Tier 1).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Free: 100 MB of storage, up to 2,000 notes of 1 MB each, with end-to-end encryption, encrypted sharing, unlimited device sync, offline access and unlimited version history. The vendor says it is not a trial.

  4. 4

    It runs on 6 platforms

Web, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    End-to-end encryption

Everything is encrypted with AES-GCM-256 on the device before it is sent or written to storage, and the password never leaves the device.

  6. 6

    Encrypted sharing

A single note or a whole branch can be shared with another user by username and a one-time code. Changes inside the shared branch sync between participants automatically.

  7. 7

    Note tree

Notes nest without limit and any note can hold both content and sub-notes, so there are no separate folders. A search narrows the tree to find a note.

  8. 8

    A 3.0 GPA, above 107 of 147

That is against the other note-taking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card

Best for private notes and passwords shared with people you trust

Mimiri Notes is an encrypted notebook for things like the alarm code, the Wi-Fi password or notes shared with a partner, encrypted on your device before they leave it. Free covers 100 MB and 2,000 notes of 1 MB each. But a forgotten password can't be reset and your notes are gone, paid notes still top out at 10 MB, nothing plugs into it, refunds aren't given, and self-hosting needs engineering skills.

ToolGPA report cardMimiri NotesGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyATier 1 is $1.20 a month, or $12 a year, for 1 GB and 10,000 notes, where the cheapest quarter of notes apps here starts at $2.99 a month. Even the biggest tier, at $5.50, comes in under the category's middle.
Free plan and trialBFree gets 100 MB and up to 2,000 notes, with the encryption, sharing, sync on every device and unlimited version history all in, and Mimiri says outright it isn't a trial. One person could live on that, though 2,000 notes and 1 MB each are caps you can see from here.
FeaturesCAES-GCM-256 encryption on the device, a tree where any note holds sub-notes, sharing a note or a whole branch by username and one-time code, version history and password hiding. It does private notes fully, and that's a smaller job: a note tops out at 10 MB even when you pay, and nothing plugs into it.
Ease of useBYou can sign up without an email address, and there's no folder system to learn, just the tree. Nothing to set up. No App Store rating is on record to go by. The one thing to get right is your password, because it can't be reset.
Platforms and integrationsBWindows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, Android and a web client, each keeping a local copy for offline use. That covers every device type, but the listing shows no integrations and no API, which is what keeps it off the top mark.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Mimiri Notes is for

  • Fits if you want notes and logins your provider can't read
  • Works for a family or small team sharing one branch of private notes, signed up without an email address

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you tend to forget passwords, as a lost one can't be reset and the notes can't be recovered
  • Too light for big attachments, since a note is capped at 1 MB on Free and 10 MB on any paid tier
  • Not for you if you want refunds as a safety net, because the vendor doesn't give them, and a subscription can't be shared across accounts
  • Tight if you're staying free, at 100 MB and 2,000 notes, and the top paid tier still stops at 5 GB and 50,000 notes
  • Watch out: self-hosting is possible, but the vendor says it needs software engineering skills for now

Good to know

Good for

  • Confidential notes and credentials the provider cannot read
  • Families or small teams sharing a branch of private notes
  • People who want an account without giving an email address

Worth knowing

  • The free tier is capped at 100 MB, 2,000 notes and 1 MB per note; the largest paid tier stops at 5 GB and 50,000 notes.
  • A forgotten password cannot be reset, and the notes cannot be recovered without it.
  • Self-hosting is possible, but the vendor says it realistically requires software engineering skills for now.
  • The vendor does not issue refunds, and a subscription cannot be shared across accounts.

Sync and offline access
Notes sync across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and a web client. Each device keeps a local copy, so notes can be read and edited offline and sync later.
Unlimited version history
Every change creates a history entry that can be viewed and restored, on every plan. Deleted notes go to a Recycle Bin first.
Password hiding and app lock
Text marked as a password is hidden on screen and copied with a tap. The app hides itself from screen-sharing programs and can lock with a PIN when left unused.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Mimiri Notes you could make: notes. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 107 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade. It costs $12 a year. Mimiri Notes is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.

What you could make

  • Notes: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • End-to-end encryption done properly.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.

What this rests on. Mimiri Notes’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
