How we grade them
| 3.6GPAJoplinExcellent | 3.4GPAMimiri NotesVery good | |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | AThe apps are free and open source, and you can sync them through storage you already have. If you'd rather not, Joplin Cloud Basic is 2.40€ a month billed yearly (28.69€) for 2 GB. Students and teachers get 50% off. | ATier 1 is $1.20 a month, or $12 a year, for 1 GB and 10,000 notes. Paid plans in this category typically start at $5.99 a month, and even Mimiri's biggest tier, at $5.50, comes in under that. |
| Free plan and trial | AThe desktop, mobile and terminal apps are all free and open source, and sync works through your own Dropbox, OneDrive, Nextcloud, WebDAV or S3. Joplin Cloud is optional. Only the browser web app, publishing and shared notebooks need it. | AFree gets you 100 MB and up to 2,000 notes, with the encryption, sharing, sync on every device and unlimited version history all included. Mimiri says outright that it isn't a trial. For text notes, most people could stay here. |
| Features | AMarkdown or rich text, notebooks, tags and full-text search on every platform. Notes hold images, PDFs, audio, maths and diagrams. There's a web clipper, optional end-to-end encryption, plugins and themes, and Evernote exports import with their attachments. | BAES-GCM-256 encryption on the device, a tree where any note can hold sub-notes, sharing a note or a whole branch by username and one-time code, and history for every change. Solid for private notes. But a note tops out at 10 MB even when you pay, and nothing else plugs into it. |
| Ease of use | C4.1 from about 480 App Store ratings, under our line for a B. You pick and connect a sync service yourself. Encryption is off until you enable it on one device first, and a forgotten encryption password can't be recovered. | BWe have no App Store rating on record for it, so a B is our ceiling. You can sign up without an email address and there's no folder system to learn, just the tree. The thing to get right is your password, because it can't be reset. |
| Platforms and integrations | AWindows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android, plus a terminal app and clippers for Chrome and Firefox. It syncs through Dropbox, OneDrive, Nextcloud, WebDAV or S3, and there's an extension API. The web app comes only with Joplin Cloud. | BWindows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, Android and a web client, with a local copy on each for offline use. That's everywhere you'd want it. It misses the A because the listing shows no integrations and no API. |
| Best for | free, open source notes synced your own way | private notes and passwords shared with people you trust |

Who each one suits
Joplin
- People who want open source notes synced through their own storage
- Privacy-minded users who want end-to-end encrypted sync
- Leaving Evernote: its export files import with formatting and attachments
- Markdown writers who work across Windows, macOS, Linux and mobile
Mimiri Notes
- Confidential notes and credentials the provider cannot read
- Families or small teams sharing a branch of private notes
- People who want an account without giving an email address
Worth knowing
Joplin
- End-to-end encryption is not on by default, and a forgotten encryption password cannot be recovered.
- Joplin Cloud and Joplin Server Business prices are listed in euros.
- On Joplin Cloud Basic you can join a shared notebook but not share your own; that and Email to Note need Pro.
- The browser-based web app and Joplin Cloud AI (beta) are available only with a Joplin Cloud subscription.
Mimiri Notes
- The free tier is capped at 100 MB, 2,000 notes and 1 MB per note; the largest paid tier stops at 5 GB and 50,000 notes.
- A forgotten password cannot be reset, and the notes cannot be recovered without it.
- Self-hosting is possible, but the vendor says it realistically requires software engineering skills for now.
- The vendor does not issue refunds, and a subscription cannot be shared across accounts.
Key features
Joplin
- Markdown notes and to-dos
- Notes and to-dos are written in Markdown or a rich text editor, organized into notebooks with tags, and found through full-text search on every platform.
- Multimedia, math and diagrams
- Notes can hold images, videos, PDFs and audio files, and math expressions and diagrams are created inside the app.
- Sync through a service you choose
- Notes synchronize through Joplin Cloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, Nextcloud, WebDAV, S3 or the local file system, and switching from one service to another is supported.
- End-to-end encryption
- Synchronized notes can be end-to-end encrypted so that the sync service cannot read them. It is off by default and has to be enabled on one device first.
- Web clipper
- Browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox save web pages and screenshots as notes.
- Plugins, themes and publishing
- Plugins, custom themes and an extension API change how the app works. With Joplin Cloud, a note can be published to a URL and notebooks shared for collaboration.
Mimiri Notes
- End-to-end encryption
- Everything is encrypted with AES-GCM-256 on the device before it is sent or written to storage, and the password never leaves the device.
- Encrypted sharing
- A single note or a whole branch can be shared with another user by username and a one-time code. Changes inside the shared branch sync between participants automatically.
- Note tree
- Notes nest without limit and any note can hold both content and sub-notes, so there are no separate folders. A search narrows the tree to find a note.
- Sync and offline access
- Notes sync across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and a web client. Each device keeps a local copy, so notes can be read and edited offline and sync later.
- Unlimited version history
- Every change creates a history entry that can be viewed and restored, on every plan. Deleted notes go to a Recycle Bin first.
- Password hiding and app lock
- Text marked as a password is hidden on screen and copied with a tap. The app hides itself from screen-sharing programs and can lock with a PIN when left unused.
