Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 38 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools we grade
Monosnap is a screenshot and screen recording tool for Mac, Windows and Chrome with its own cloud storage. Captures can be marked up with arrows, text, shapes and blur, then uploaded for a short share link or sent to outside storage such as Dropbox, Google Drive or Amazon S3. The Free and Non-Commercial plans are licensed for personal use only, so using it at work needs the Commercial plan.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Monosnap, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No store rating on record, but this is an app you download and use straight away: take a capture, mark it up, paste the link.
- 1
Best for annotated screenshots with a share link
Monosnap takes a screenshot, lets you put arrows, text and blur on it, and hands you a short link, and it can send captures to your own Dropbox, Google Drive or Amazon S3.
- 2
Paid plans start at $2.50 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $2.5 per month, billed yearly; $3 billed monthly.
- 3
There is a free plan
Free plan, for personal and family use only: unlimited screenshots, 5 minutes of video recording, 2 GB of Monosnap storage, 100 MB per upload, and 30 days of access to the cloud integrations.
- 4
It runs on 2 platforms
macOS and Windows, with a browser extension too.
- 5
Screenshot capture
Captures the full screen, part of it or a selected window, with an 8x magnifier for exact crop edges, customizable hotkeys and delayed screenshots.
- 6
Annotation editor
Highlights details with a pen, text, arrows and shapes and blurs private information. A capture can also be opened in an external editor.
- 7
Video and GIF recording
Records screencasts and GIFs and can highlight details while recording. The Free plan allows 5 minutes of video; paid plans are unlimited.
- 8
A 2.8 GPA, above 38 of 52
That is against the other screen recording and video tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for annotated screenshots with a share link
Monosnap takes a screenshot, lets you put arrows, text and blur on it, and hands you a short link, and it can send captures to your own Dropbox, Google Drive or Amazon S3. Free and the $2.5 plan are licensed for personal use only, so work means Commercial at $5 per user a month. Free video stops at 5 minutes, and there's no Linux or phone app.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Non-Commercial is $2.5 a month on the year, and Commercial, the one you need at work, is $5 per user. The lowest quarter of this category starts at $5 and the middle is $10, so both plans sit at or under that line. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Unlimited screenshots free. But video stops at 5 minutes, storage at 2 GB, each upload at 100 MB, the cloud integrations go after 30 days, and the license is personal and family use only. |
| Features | C | It does the capture-and-annotate job fully: magnified crops, delayed shots, pen, text, arrows, blur, plus screencasts and GIFs. That's a smaller job than video proper, and the listing shows no video editing, with team accounts and private links held back for Commercial. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but this is an app you download and use straight away: take a capture, mark it up, paste the link. Pointing it at your own Dropbox, S3 or FTP is optional, not a setup step. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Mac, Windows and a Chrome extension, with paid plans sending captures to Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, Evernote, Amazon S3, FTP and more. No Linux and no phone app, which is what keeps it off an A. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Monosnap is for
- Fits if you send annotated screenshots with arrows, text and blur all day
- Works for home users who need screenshots and short clips at no cost
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want it free at work, as Free and Non-Commercial are for personal use only
- Tight if you're staying free and record video, because clips stop at 5 minutes, storage at 2 GB and uploads at 100 MB
- Not for you if you're on Linux or a phone, since apps are Mac, Windows and Chrome only
- Watch out: free accounts lose the cloud integrations after 30 days, and no video editing is listed
- Pricey if you buy through the Mac App Store, at $4.49 a month against $3 a month on Monosnap's own site
Good to know
Good for
- Annotated screenshots with arrows, text and blur on Mac or Windows
- People who keep captures in their own Dropbox, S3 or FTP storage
- Home users who need screenshots and short clips at no cost
Worth knowing
- The Free and Non-Commercial plans are for personal use only; any commercial use needs the Commercial plan.
- Free accounts are limited to 5 minutes of video recording, 2 GB of storage and 100 MB per upload, and lose the cloud integrations after 30 days.
- Mac App Store purchases are priced separately, at $4.49 a month or $44.99 a year for the non-commercial version.
- Apps are offered for Mac, Windows and Chrome only; no Linux or mobile app is listed.

Keep it
Nothing Monosnap does is plain enough to make in a weekend. The 6 things listed below take a company.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 38 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools we grade. It costs $30 a year.
What you could not
- Capture tools hooked into the operating system.
- Recording the screen with its sound, and somewhere to keep the video.
- Storing and serving files for other people.
- A real app for macOS and Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, Dropbox, Google Drive and Box among them.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: single sign-on.
What this rests on. Monosnap’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
