Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 7 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade
Moom is a window management utility for macOS from Many Tricks. It moves and resizes windows from a pop-up palette on the green window button, by dragging to snap zones, with modifier keys and the mouse, or entirely from the keyboard, and it can save and restore whole layouts of windows. It is sold as a one-time purchase directly from the developer, with a free trial.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Moom, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It's Mac only, and the Mac App Store sells only the older Moom Classic.

The report card
Best for saving and restoring whole window layouts on a Mac
Moom is a Mac window manager that saves whole window layouts and puts them back, say when you plug a laptop into a bigger screen. It's $15 once for every Mac in your household, but the trial's length isn't stated, updates are only promised for a year, and there's no direct Shortcuts support. It's Mac only, and the Mac App Store sells only the older Moom Classic.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | $15 once and the licence is valid forever, covering every Mac you use plus the family in your household, with at least 1 year of updates. Utilities here sit at $2.99 a month in the middle, so that's five months' money and then done. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free version. There's a trial download on the site with no card asked for, but its length isn't stated, so we can't tell you how long you get before the $15. |
| Features | C | Window placing is its one job: a palette on the green button with up to 61 actions, snap zones, saved layouts, chained actions and full keyboard control. It's still that one job, and the FAQ says there's no direct Shortcuts support, only AppleScript. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and much of it is something you build: layouts to save, palettes to fill, chains and folders to arrange. Hovering the green button for the palette needs no setup, but expect an evening of setting up before the rest is useful. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | Mac only. Moom 4.6 needs macOS 10.13 High Sierra or newer. There's no direct Shortcuts support either: the FAQ says some features can be reached through AppleScript. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Moom is for
- Fits if you rearrange the same windows every time you dock your laptop
- Works for households with a few Macs, since one $15 license covers them all
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you're on Windows or Linux, or a Mac older than macOS 10.13 High Sierra
- Not for you if you want every future update included, since later ones may be paid after the first year
- Tight if you buy everything through the Mac App Store, which only carries the older Moom Classic at $6.99
- Watch out: the site doesn't say how long the free trial lasts
- Not for you if you automate with Shortcuts, as there's no direct support, only AppleScript for some features
Good to know
Good for
- Mac users who rearrange the same windows each time they dock a laptop
- People who want both mouse-driven and keyboard-driven window control
- Buyers who prefer a one-time license that covers all of their Macs
Worth knowing
- macOS only; Moom 4.6 requires macOS 10.13 High Sierra or newer.
- Moom 4 is sold only on the Many Tricks site. The Mac App Store carries Moom Classic, the older Moom 3, at $6.99.
- A license includes at least one year of updates. Later updates may be paid, though the purchased version keeps working.
- There is no direct Shortcuts support; the FAQ says some features can be reached through AppleScript.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Moom you would be making control over other apps' windows. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 77 of the 94 other desktop utilities grade higher. It costs $15, paid once.
What you could not
- Control over other apps' windows.
- A native app living in the menu bar.
- A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
What this rests on. Moom’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
