Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 6 of the 9 other law practice software we grade
MyCase is practice management software for law firms, now sold as 8am MyCase by 8am, the company behind LawPay. It keeps cases, contacts, documents, calendars, time entries, invoices and trust ledgers in one web app, with a client portal and two-way texting. Higher plans add intake forms and a legal CRM, workflows, document automation and the 8am IQ AI assistants.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about MyCase, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It's a whole firm system, so cases, contacts, trust ledgers and LawPay payments all need setting up before it does much for you.
- 1
Best for solo and small firms keeping cases and billing together
MyCase keeps cases, documents, time, invoices and trust ledgers in one web app with phone apps, from $50 a user a month billed yearly.
- 2
Paid plans start at $50 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $50 per user / month, billed annually ($60 billed monthly).
- 3
You can try it first
10-day free trial with full access, no credit card required
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, iOS and Android.
- 5
Cases, calendar and documents
Each case holds its notes, tasks, events, documents and contacts. A shared firm calendar shows statute of limitations dates, and document storage is unlimited on every plan.
- 6
Time, billing and trust accounting
Track time and expenses, turn them into invoices, and keep trust ledgers per client and per case with reconciliation. LEDES and batch billing, payment plans and interest come with Pro.
- 7
Payments through LawPay
Clients pay by card, eCheck or financing through 8am LawPay, with next-business-day deposits. LawPay has no monthly fee; processing rates apply.
- 8
A 2.2 GPA, above 6 of 9
That is against the other law practice software we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace MyCase you would be making client trust accounts kept the way bar rules require. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for solo and small firms keeping cases and billing together
MyCase keeps cases, documents, time, invoices and trust ledgers in one web app with phone apps, from $50 a user a month billed yearly. But intake forms, eSignature, workflows and texting need Pro at $100, three-way trust reconciliation is a $39 add-on on top of that, and court-rules calendaring is another subscription, so the bill climbs fast past Basic.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Basic is $50 a user a month billed yearly, or $60 monthly. That's this category's dearer quarter, when most rivals with a published price start at $49. Intake, the CRM, eSignature and texting need Pro at $100, twice the middle. |
| Free plan and trial | C | A 10-day trial with full access and no card. There's no free plan, so after ten days you're paying or you're out. |
| Features | C | Cases, a shared calendar, unlimited documents, time, invoices, trust ledgers, LawPay payments, a client portal and AI assistants. The listing's gaps keep it here: three-way trust reconciliation needs the $39 MyCase Accounting add-on, and court-rules calendaring is a separate subscription. |
| Ease of use | C | We have no store rating on file for it. It's a whole firm system, so cases, contacts, trust ledgers and LawPay payments all need setting up before it does much for you. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone and Android, with Gmail, Outlook, Google Calendar, QuickBooks, Dropbox, Zapier and a read-only Claude connector. No desktop app, and the open API is on Advanced only. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who MyCase is for
- Fits if you're a solo or small firm that wants cases and billing in one place
- Works for firms that already take card payments through LawPay
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you need intake forms, eSignature, workflows or texting, which all need Pro at $100 a user billed yearly
- Tight if you want conflict check tracking, split billing, Desktop Drive or the open API, as those are Advanced only at $130
- Watch out: three-way trust reconciliation is the $39 a user MyCase Accounting add-on, and Basic can't have it
- Watch out: court-rules calendaring is a separate subscription, and fees already paid aren't refunded if you cancel
- Skip it if you want to stay free, as there's only a 10-day trial and no free plan

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace MyCase you would be making client trust accounts kept the way bar rules require. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.2 is higher than 6 of the 9 other law practice software we grade. It costs $600 a year.
What you could make
- Case management, time tracking, invoicing and forms: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Client trust accounts kept the way bar rules require.
- Texts from a business number, registered with the carriers.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, Claude, Gmail and Google Calendar among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. MyCase’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
