Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 23 of the 23 other web hosts we grade
Netlify builds and hosts websites and web apps pushed from Git, the command line, drag and drop or an AI agent, and serves them from a global CDN with a private preview link for every change. It adds serverless functions, a Postgres database, file storage, forms and a gateway to AI models. Plans are priced by a monthly allowance of credits that deploys, bandwidth, compute and web requests use up.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Netlify, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The free plan really works for a small site, but every deploy and gigabyte uses credits, and when they run out the site pauses.
- 1
Best for hosting sites you build in code and push from Git
It's made for people who write code, not for a WordPress blog set up in one click.
- 2
Paid plans start at $9 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $9 per month for 1 member.
- 3
There is a free plan
300 credits a month as a hard limit, one member, custom domains with SSL, functions, database, blob storage and unlimited deploy previews. Sites pause when credits run out.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Deploy from Git, CLI, AI or a folder
Projects deploy on every push from GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket, from the Netlify CLI, by drag and drop, or from an AI agent, with one-click rollbacks.
- 6
Deploy Previews
Every pull request and branch gets its own preview URL where reviewers can leave visual feedback, and new projects stay private until you publish them.
- 7
Agent Runners
AI agents such as Claude, Codex and Gemini can be asked to fix, update and ship code from the dashboard, with 1 to 50 concurrent runs by plan.
- 8
A 2.8 GPA, above 23 of 23
That is against the other web hosts we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Netlify you would be making an AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for hosting sites you build in code and push from Git
Netlify hosts sites and web apps you push from Git, with a private preview link for every change and functions, a database and forms beside them. It's made for people who write code, not for a WordPress blog set up in one click. The free plan really works for a small site, but every deploy and gigabyte uses credits, and when they run out the site pauses.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | Graded against its own alternatives, since it hosts sites built elsewhere: Personal is $9 a month with no intro price to expire, so the second year costs what the first did. That's under Cloudways' $11 and far under Kinsta's $30. Extra credits are $5 for 500, and a team needs Pro at $20. |
| Free plan and trial | B | A real free plan: custom domains with SSL, functions, a database and unlimited deploy previews, with 300 credits a month. A small personal site fits. A busy one doesn't, and it pauses when the credits run out rather than billing you. |
| Features | B | Against its own alternatives it covers the whole job: deploys from Git, the command line, a folder or an AI agent, preview links with feedback, rollbacks, functions, Postgres, file storage, forms and user sign-ups. Just know it's for sites built in code. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record. Dropping a folder in works, but most of it assumes you build sites in code and push them from Git, and credits are one more thing to keep an eye on. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A web dashboard with no app on record, plus a command-line tool. It hooks into GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Slack, and AI agents such as Claude, Codex, Gemini and Cursor can ship code through it. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Netlify is for
- Great if you build sites with a front-end framework and push them to GitHub
- Handy when reviewers need a preview link for every pull request
- Good for non-commercial open source projects, which can apply for the free Open Source plan
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want a WordPress blog installed in one click, the way a shared host does it
- Tight if traffic spikes, as every GB of bandwidth costs 20 credits and an empty tank pauses the site
- Pricey if a few of you need to share, since more than one member means Pro at $20 a month
Good to know
Good for
- Developers deploying front-end frameworks and static sites from Git
- Teams that want a preview link on every pull request
- Side projects small enough to fit in 300 free credits a month
- Non-commercial open source projects, through the free Open Source plan
Worth knowing
- Deploys, bandwidth, compute and requests all draw on monthly credits: 15 per production deploy and 20 per GB of bandwidth.
- When an account's credits run out its sites pause until the next cycle, unless auto recharge ($5 for 500 on Personal, $10 for 1,500 on Pro) is turned on.
- Free and Personal allow one member; private organization repos and shared env variables start at Pro, and extra concurrent builds are $40 a month.
- SSO, SCIM, a 99.99% uptime SLA, log drains and 24/7 support are on the Enterprise plan only.

Part 04 · Standing
Where it stands
Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own
23/23
Other web hosts it is graded above
Netlify's GPA of 2.8 is higher than 23 of the 23 other web hosts we grade.
It stands best on free plan and trial (B, above 23 of 23) and worst on ease of use (C, above 0).
Its paid plans start at $9 a month, against a middle price of $9 for the category: 11 of the 22 others that charge start lower.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.7 out of 4, and no tool on the category's chart scores higher without costing more.

Price against what you get
Each dot is one of 23 web hosts. Further left costs less; higher up scores better on features, ease of use and platforms. Netlify is the marked dot.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Netlify you would be making an AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 23 of the 23 other web hosts we grade. It costs $108 a year.
What you could make
- Forms: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- An AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it.
- It plugs into other products, GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket among them, and has an API.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Netlify’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
