Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 8 of the 21 other spreadsheet and database tools we grade
NocoDB is a no-code database platform with a spreadsheet-style interface. Bases can be built from scratch or by connecting an existing Postgres or MySQL database, then viewed as grids, kanban boards, galleries, forms, calendars and maps. It is sold as a hosted cloud service and is also available as a free self-hosted Community edition under a fair-code license.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about NocoDB, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No rating on record, and the work is building the base: tables, views, roles and workflows before it's any use.

The report card
Best for a spreadsheet front end for Postgres or MySQL
NocoDB puts a spreadsheet face on a database, either one it makes for you or a Postgres or MySQL database you already have. Self-hosted, the Community edition has unlimited records, storage and seats, under a fair-code licence and with 2 workflows per base. The cloud Free plan stops at 1,000 records, your own database on the cloud needs Business at $24 a seat, and it's browser only.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Plus is $12 a seat a month billed annually, $15 monthly, which is above the $9.99 middle for this category and near the $13.00 dear quarter. Billing stops at 9 seats, so a big team pays $108 a month and no more. Connecting your own database on the cloud waits for Business at $24. |
| Free plan and trial | B | The cloud Free plan is small: 3 editor seats, 10 commenter seats, 1,000 records, 1 GB of storage and 100 automation runs. The self-hosted Community edition is free with unlimited records, storage and seats, if you'll run the server and accept 2 workflows per base. |
| Features | B | It covers the whole no-code database job: Grid, Form, Gallery, Kanban, Calendar and Map views, with Timeline and Gantt in the docs too, a visual workflow builder with conditions and loops, JavaScript scripts, webhooks, Interfaces as small apps on your data, access control down to the record, and two APIs. |
| Ease of use | C | No rating on record, and the work is building the base: tables, views, roles and workflows before it's any use. Imports from Airtable, Excel, CSV or JSON give you a head start, and hosting the Community edition is a server job on top. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A browser, with no desktop or phone apps listed, which is what keeps it off an A. It connects to Postgres and MySQL databases, has Meta and Data APIs and webhooks, and links to Jira, GitHub, GitLab and Zendesk. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who NocoDB is for
- Fits if you already have a Postgres or MySQL database and want a spreadsheet view of it
- Works for teams of more than 9, since Plus and Business stop billing at 9 seats
Who it is not for
- Tight if you're staying on the cloud Free plan, which stops at 1,000 records, 3 editors and 1,000 API calls a month
- Pricey if you want to connect your own database on the cloud, as that starts on Business at $24 a seat
- Not for you if you need an open-source licence, as the Community edition is under the Sustainable Use License
- Watch out: AI features, extensions and advanced forms are limited to the cloud and paid self-hosted versions
- Skip it if you want a phone or desktop app, as it's browser only; Scale also has a 3-seat minimum
Good to know
Good for
- Teams that want a spreadsheet-style front end on Postgres or MySQL
- Self-hosters who want unlimited records and seats at no charge
- Larger teams, since Plus and Business billing stops at 9 seats
Worth knowing
- The cloud Free plan stops at 1,000 records, 1 GB of storage, 3 editors and 1,000 API calls a month.
- The self-hosted Community edition is released under the Sustainable Use License, which NocoDB describes as fair-code.
- External database connections are not supported on the cloud Plus plan; they start at Business, with 10 connections.
- NocoDB says AI features, extensions and advanced form options are limited to its cloud and paid self-hosted versions.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace NocoDB you would be making a builder that other people can use without writing code. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $144 a year.
What you could make
- Kanban boards and forms: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A builder that other people can use without writing code.
- Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
- Databases with views, filters and links between them.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: audit logs.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. NocoDB’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
