Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.4

GPA, above 138 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

Notability is a note-taking app for handwriting, typing and marking up documents, with audio recording that stays in sync with what you write. Paid plans add transcription and AI tools that turn notes into summaries, flashcards and quizzes. It runs on iPad, iPhone, Mac, Windows, Android and the web, with a free Starter plan limited to 5 notes and a one-time Classic purchase offered alongside the subscriptions.

To get you started, here are 10 things to know about Notability, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The plan list is the one chore: six of them, with different features on each.

The report card

Best for lecture notes with the audio attached

Notability records audio while you write, and playback follows the moment you wrote each note, which is why lecture and meeting note-takers use it. Paid plans start at $14.99 a year. But the free Starter plan stops at 5 notes, recording needs Plus, AI summaries and unlimited transcription need Pro at $99.99 a year, and handwriting recognition and audio playback sync are iOS and Android only.

Value for moneyALite is $14.99 a year and Plus $19.99, where notes apps here sit around $6 a month in the middle: a whole year for less than three months of the usual. Classic is $49.99 once if you hate subscriptions. Do pay yearly, though, since Lite month to month is $4.99, or $59.88 over a year.
Free plan and trialCStarter is free with every editing tool, PDF import and 20,000+ templates, but it's 5 notes and that's your lot, which you'd pass in a week. The only free trials are 30 days on the Business plans.
FeaturesBHandwriting, typing and PDF markup on one page, with audio recorded and transcribed alongside and playback that follows the line you were writing. Plus makes up to 400 quiz questions a month, Pro adds live summaries. Handwriting recognition, math conversion and audio playback sync are iOS and Android only.

Platforms and integrationsAiPad, iPhone, Mac, Windows, Android and the web, with iCloud, YouTube and school device managers like Jamf, Mosyle and Intune. That covers every device type, though YouTube conversion is web only and third-party backups are iOS only.

Keep it

The plain part of Notability you could make: notes and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 7 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.4 is higher than 138 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade. It costs $14.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Notes and templates: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Speech turned into text you can trust.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • Several people working in it at the same moment.
  • It plugs into other products, iCloud, YouTube and Jamf among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • Hooks into the device itself: handwriting.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

Refunds and cancelling

BGrade

Good · checked Oct 18, 2026

Buy from the Notability website and you get 14 days to change your mind, for any reason, with a full refund. That is a real promise and more than most note apps make. It is a B rather than an A because 14 days is short, you have to write in to claim it, and the window does not exist at all if you subscribed in the App Store or on Google Play, where the store decides.

Refund window
14 days
How you cancel
In the app store
Getting your money back

The refund policy says a subscription bought through the Notability website can be refunded in full for any reason within 14 calendar days of purchase, requested through the in-app support form or by email, and that after those 14 days it is not eligible. For App Store purchases it says Notability cannot process refunds and points you to Apple, which it says usually answers in 24 to 48 hours.

Stated on support.gingerlabs.com
How to cancel Notability

A subscription bought in the App Store is cancelled in the device's Settings, under your Apple Account and then Subscriptions, and the app's own Manage Subscription button opens that same App Store page. The subscription terms say more generally that you cancel through your account settings before the end of the term. None of the pages read says how a web subscription taken out through Stripe is ended.

  1. Open your device Settings
  2. Select your Apple Account
  3. Tap Subscriptions
  4. Find Notability and select Cancel Subscription
Stated on support.gingerlabs.com
What you keep afterwards

The refund policy says a cancelled subscription stays active to the end of the current billing cycle. The account then returns to Starter, the free plan, which the subscription FAQ describes as 5 starter notes with a monthly editing allowance shown in the settings. Owners of the one-off Classic purchase drop back to Classic. The Cloud FAQ adds that Notability Cloud sync is free for everyone, so notes keep syncing.

Stated on support.gingerlabs.com
Renewals

The subscription terms say the term renews automatically unless you opt out of auto-renewal in your account settings, for a period of the same length, at the then-current non-promotional rate rather than the price you signed up at. They add that ending a paid service does not earn a prorated refund of the period already paid for, and no reminder before a renewal is mentioned.

Stated on notability.com

In your favour

  • Fourteen days to change your mind on a website purchase, for any reason, with a full refund.
  • Cancel and you keep the paid plan to the end of the billing cycle you already paid for.
  • Your notes stay put: Notability Cloud sync is free whether you subscribe or not.
  • Buyers of the one-off Classic plan fall back to Classic rather than to the free Starter tier.

Watch out for

  • The 14 days apply to website purchases only. Buy in the App Store and Apple decides.
  • You cannot refund yourself: the policy asks you to send the in-app form or an email inside the 14 days.
  • It renews at the rate in force at renewal, which need not be the promotional price you first paid.
  • No prorated refund if you stop mid-term, and no reminder before the renewal is promised.

Customer support

CGrade

Ordinary · checked Oct 18, 2026

A support form you reach from inside the app, an email route for refunds, a decent help centre and a Discord server Notability runs itself. Nothing anywhere says when the team is at work or how long a reply should take, and there is no phone line or live chat. Standard for a note-taking app, which makes it a C.

Ways to get help

  • Email

The refund policy gives an email address for support as an alternative to the in-app form, and says the form is the faster of the two. Business customers are given a separate address on the business pages.

    Stated on support.gingerlabs.com
  • Help inside the app

From the Library you open the menu, choose Help and then Contact Support, and fill in a form, which the article asks you to send with screenshots or a recording. A separate Idea Portal takes feature requests and lets others vote on them.

    Stated on support.gingerlabs.com
  • Help centre

A searchable help centre with collections on announcements, general information, sync and storage, features, troubleshooting, the web app, Android and Notability for Organizations. It is open without signing in.

    Stated on support.gingerlabs.com
  • Community or forum

Notability runs its own Discord server, which its help article describes as a place to give direct feedback on current builds and talk to other users, with team members taking part.

What depends on your plan

The plan comparison page lists customer support as a line in its Notability for Business section, but the page did not make clear which of the business plans the line covers. None of the pages read describes a priority queue, a faster reply or a different route for the paid individual plans.

Stated on notability.com

In your favour

  • You report a problem from inside the app, with diagnostics to hand, rather than hunting for a form.
  • The help centre is open to everyone and covers billing, cancelling and refunds properly.
  • Notability runs its own Discord, and says its own people take part in it.

Watch out for

  • No page states support hours or a target reply time for anybody.
  • There is no phone number and no live chat.
  • The 24 to 48 hours quoted for a refund is Apple's turnaround, not Notability's.
  • The comparison page mentions customer support for business plans without saying what it amounts to.

What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: Notability's terms of service and its separate subscription terms, its help articles on the refund policy, cancelling and payment problems in the App Store, the subscription FAQ, the Notability Cloud FAQ, the settings guide, the contact support article and the Discord article, plus the plan comparison page. Nobody here cancelled a plan or contacted its support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA. How we grade refunds and support.

ToolGPA grades software the way a school report grades a pupil: five subjects, a letter for each with the reason written beside it, and a GPA that averages them. Prices, plans and platforms are read from each maker’s own pages and dated, so you always know how fresh a figure is.

Every grade, review and ranking on ToolGPA is our own judgement. No company can pay for a grade or change one. Every tool on the site has a guide like this one, free to download and pass on. It all lives at toolgpa.com.
