Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 51 of the 65 other focus apps we grade

one sec is a screen time app that inserts a short pause, such as a breathing exercise, before a chosen app or website opens, so that opening it becomes a deliberate choice. It can also block apps and sites outright during a session or on a schedule, and interrupt again after a set time inside an app. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Android and Mac, with a browser extension for desktop browsers.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about one sec, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for people who open Instagram on autopilot

If you'd switch it off in a weak moment, look elsewhere.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $1.67 a month when paid by the year

As its pricing page puts it: $3.99 / month, or $19.99 / year (US web store price).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

The breathing interruption and Re-Intervention for one app or website, with no ads.

  4. 4

    It runs on 3 platforms

iOS, Android and macOS, with a browser extension too.

  5. 5

    Interruptions before an app opens

A short pause appears before a chosen app or site opens. Types include a breathing exercise, a mirror, a math task, rotating the phone and typing random text.

  6. 6

    Re-Intervention

After a set time inside an app, for example 5 minutes, one sec sends you out and asks you to go through another interruption to unlock more time.

  7. 7

    Block sessions and schedules

Chosen apps and sites can be blocked completely during a block session or at scheduled times, and interruptions can be limited to set weekdays and hours.

  8. 8

    A 3.0 GPA, above 51 of 65

That is against the other focus apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Your call

A focus timer at its plainest counts down 25 minutes and keeps a log.

The report card

Best for people who open Instagram on autopilot

one sec puts a short pause, such as a breathing exercise, in front of the apps and sites you pick, for $19.99 a year across phone, tablet, Mac and browser. It nudges rather than locks and is easy to switch off, the free version covers one app, monthly is $6.99 in the App Store against $3.99 on its own site, Android lacks strict blocks, and some users say the pause wears off. If you'd switch it off in a weak moment, look elsewhere.

ToolGPA report cardone secGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyA$19.99 a year, about $1.67 a month, which is under the lowest quarter of this category's prices, and one payment covers your phone, tablet, Mac and browser. Students get 50% off going by the help centre. Lifetime at $99.99 is five years of the yearly price, so we'd leave it.
Free plan and trialCFree forever with no ads, and then the cap: one app or one website. Pick Instagram and TikTok carries on untouched. The yearly Pro plan opens with a 1-week trial.
FeaturesCWays to slow you down: breathing, a mirror, a maths task, being kicked out after 5 minutes, scheduled blocks, intention prompts and stats. It's a speed bump rather than a wall, and not all of it travels: the help centre table marks strict block sessions and website blocking as missing on Android.
Ease of useA4.8 from about 23,700 App Store ratings. Setup used to be the moan, with a Shortcuts automation to build per app; the version 6.0 notes from September 2026 say it's one tap on the newest iOS, and the seven-step way is still there for older iPhones.
Platforms and integrationsBiPhone, iPad, Android and Mac, plus a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge, and it hooks into Structured, LENGO and Apple Health. No Windows or Linux app, so on those it's the browser only.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who one sec is for

  • Fits if you open Instagram or TikTok without thinking and want a pause, not a wall
  • Works for people who want the same pause on phone, Mac and browser for $19.99 a year

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you know you'd just turn it off, because several users say that's easy to do
  • Tight if you're on Android, where one sec's help table marks strict blocks and website blocking as missing
  • Tight if you're staying free and have more than one app you can't put down
  • Pricey if you pay monthly in the App Store, where it's $6.99 against $3.99 on one sec's own site
  • Watch out: there's no Windows or Linux app, and the $29.99 Family Plan doesn't say how many people it covers

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want a pause before social apps rather than a hard block
  • Using one purchase across iPhone, Android, Mac and desktop browsers
  • Teams and schools buying multi-seat licenses

Worth knowing

  • The free version covers a single app or website; adding more needs one sec pro.
  • The price depends on where you buy: one sec's web store charges $3.99 a month in the US, while the US App Store lists the monthly purchase at $6.99.
  • No Windows or Linux desktop app is listed; on those systems one sec runs only as a browser extension.
  • one sec's pages disagree on Android: its help table marks website blocking and strict block sessions as unavailable, while the Play listing describes blocking apps and websites.

What you could not

  • Blocking that reaches every browser and app and is hard to switch off.
  • Apps for macOS, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
