Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 44 of the 74 other calendar and scheduling apps we grade
OurCal is a shared calendar app from OurCal Ltd for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro and Android. Groups of 2 to 100 people share color-coded calendars, and every event has its own chat thread where changes are posted automatically. Profiles, calendars, events, messages and files are end-to-end encrypted by default. It is a paid product: after a free trial, each group needs one monthly subscription sized by its member count.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about OurCal, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Each group needs its own subscription, billing is monthly only, and there's no web or Windows app.
- 1
Best for private group calendars with built-in chat
There's no free plan: the trial's length isn't stated, and when it ends the group is paused until somebody pays.
- 2
Paid plans start at $6.99 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $6.99 per month for a group of up to 6 people.
- 3
You can try it first
Free trial starts when a group is created, with no payment details; length not stated. 30-day money-back guarantee.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
iOS, macOS and Android.
- 5
Chat on every event
Each event has its own thread for messages, photos, files and notes, with reactions, replies and quotes. A separate group chat covers anything that does not belong to one event.
- 6
Automatic change tracking
When someone edits an event, a before-and-after update is posted automatically in the event chat and the activity feed, and reminders go to the members concerned.
- 7
End-to-end encryption by default
Every profile, group, calendar, event, message and file is end-to-end encrypted. The encryption is provided by Seald, whose technology is certified by ANSSI, France's cybersecurity agency.
- 8
A 2.8 GPA, above 44 of 74
That is against the other calendar and scheduling apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for private group calendars with built-in chat
OurCal is a shared calendar where every event has its own chat thread, everything is end-to-end encrypted, and one $6.99 monthly subscription covers a group of six. There's no free plan: the trial's length isn't stated, and when it ends the group is paused until somebody pays. Each group needs its own subscription, billing is monthly only, and there's no web or Windows app.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | $6.99 a month for a group of up to 6 sits just above this category's $6 middle, though everyone else in the group joins free. Billing is monthly only: OurCal says annual plans were retired on August 1, 2025, and each group needs its own subscription. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. Creating a group starts a trial with no payment details asked for, but the listing can't say how long it runs. After it, the group is paused until a member subscribes. |
| Features | B | The shared-calendar job: a chat thread on every event, before-and-after notes posted when someone changes a plan, end-to-end encryption by default, two-way sync with Google, Microsoft and iCloud, and typed entry like "Dentist Tuesday 3pm for an hour". |
| Ease of use | A | 4.71 from about 1,100 App Store ratings. One person subscribes and everyone else just joins, and events can be typed in plain words. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | iPhone, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro and Android, syncing Google, Outlook, Exchange and iCloud calendars. No web app and nothing for Windows, and pushing events out to other calendars isn't on Android yet. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who OurCal is for
- Fits if your family is split between iPhone and Android and wants one calendar
- Works for groups that want their shared calendar encrypted so only members can read it
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want a free shared calendar, because there's no free plan once the trial ends
- Pricey if you run two groups, as family and work each need their own subscription
- Not for you if you plan on a Windows PC or in a browser, where OurCal has no app
- Watch out: billing is monthly only, since annual plans were retired on August 1, 2025, and the trial length isn't stated
- Watch out: pushing OurCal events out to other calendars isn't available on Android yet
Good to know
Good for
- Couples and families split between iPhone and Android
- Groups that want their shared calendar end-to-end encrypted
- Shift workers sharing a rota with family and friends
- People who want the discussion about a plan kept inside the event
Worth knowing
- There is no free plan: when the trial ends the group is paused until a member subscribes.
- Each group needs its own subscription, so a family group and a work group are billed separately.
- Billing is monthly only. OurCal says annual plans were retired on August 1, 2025.
- No web or Windows app is listed, and pushing OurCal events out to other calendars is not yet available on Android.

- Multiple groups and availability sharing

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of OurCal you could make: calendar and natural-language input. What surrounds it you could not. The 6 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $83.88 a year.
What you could make
- Calendar and natural-language input: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and Outlook among them.
- End-to-end encryption done properly.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. OurCal’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
