Worth knowing
Cozi
- The free version shows ads and only lets you enter events for the next 30 days; Cozi Gold gives unlimited future calendar access.
- Month view on mobile, calendar search, change notifications and the birthday tracker need Cozi Gold.
- Everyone on an account signs in with one shared password and has full access to its data; Cozi offers no restricted-access option.
- Connections to Google Calendar, Outlook and Apple Calendar are read-only feeds, not two-way sync.
OurCal
- There is no free plan: when the trial ends the group is paused until a member subscribes.
- Each group needs its own subscription, so a family group and a work group are billed separately.
- Billing is monthly only. OurCal says annual plans were retired on August 1, 2025.
- No web or Windows app is listed, and pushing OurCal events out to other calendars is not yet available on Android.
Key features
Cozi
- Color-coded family calendar
- Each of up to 12 family members gets a name and a color. The calendar shows everyone at once or filters to one person, on a computer or a phone.
- Reminders and agenda emails
- Reminders arrive as push notifications or email, and each person can receive a daily or weekly agenda email. Free accounts get one reminder per attendee; Gold allows three.
- Shopping and to-do lists
- Shared grocery lists, chore lists and as many other lists as you want. The shopping list can be emailed to whoever is at the store.
- Recipes and meal planning
- Store recipes, plan dinners for the week and add a recipe's ingredients to the shopping list.
- Cozi Today
- A single daily view of upcoming appointments, current to-dos and recently added shopping list items.
- AI tools in Cozi Max
- AI Event Import reads invitations and calendar details from email and adds them to the calendar. Max also generates recipes and builds meal plans around your preferences.
OurCal
- Chat on every event
- Each event has its own thread for messages, photos, files and notes, with reactions, replies and quotes. A separate group chat covers anything that does not belong to one event.
- Automatic change tracking
- When someone edits an event, a before-and-after update is posted automatically in the event chat and the activity feed, and reminders go to the members concerned.
- End-to-end encryption by default
- Every profile, group, calendar, event, message and file is end-to-end encrypted. The encryption is provided by Seald, whose technology is certified by ANSSI, France's cybersecurity agency.
- Calendar sync in both directions
- Google, Microsoft and Apple iCloud calendars, plus subscribed calendars, can be shared with a group. OurCal events can be pushed out to a calendar on the device from iPhone, iPad and Mac.
- Natural-language event creation
- Typing a phrase such as "Dentist Tuesday 3pm for an hour" creates the event, and reminders, to-dos and repeating events work the same way. The vendor says this runs on the device.
- Multiple groups and availability sharing
- Each group has its own calendars, members and chat, and a person can join any number of groups. Busy times can be shared group by group without revealing event details.
