Best for a calendar your provider can't read
Don't fancy a company reading your diary? Tuta Calendar encrypts events, invitations and even reminder notifications end to end, and the apps are open source. It comes with a Tuta account, free for one calendar. The trade-off is that it keeps to itself: other calendars come in by import, with no two-way sync to Google or Outlook.
Who Tuta Calendar is for
- Great if you want a calendar that even its own provider can't read
- Handy when you already use Tuta Mail and want email, contacts and calendar in one account
- Good for Linux users after an open-source desktop calendar client
Who Tuta Calendar is not for
- Skip it if you need it kept in step with a Google or Outlook calendar, as it only imports
- Tight if you're staying free and want to send invitations or share a calendar
- Not for you if you only want a calendar, since the paid features come with Tuta's mail plans
Why Tuta Calendar gets a 3.2
Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.
- AValue for moneyTuta's lowest paid personal plan is €3 a month paid yearly, €3.60 monthly, taxes included. That's under what most calendar apps charge, and it's Tuta's encrypted email, unlimited calendars and 20 GB of storage in one. The calendar isn't sold on its own.
- BFree plan and trialThe Free plan gives you one encrypted calendar and 1 GB, with apps on every platform. But there's no calendar sharing, no event invitations and no offline support, so it's a calendar for you alone. Those limits are tight.
- BFeaturesEnd-to-end encryption on events, invitations and shared calendars, with reminders kept hidden from your phone's operating system. On paid plans you can share with read or write rights. But the calendar page mentions no two-way sync with Google or Outlook, only import.
- BEase of useIt's part of your Tuta account, so if you use Tuta Mail it's already there, and old calendars import in the settings. We have no App Store rating on record to go by, so it stops at a B.
- BPlatforms and integrationsIt runs on everything: web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone and Android, with the Android app on F-Droid too. But the only thing it connects to is Tuta Mail, and no API is listed. That keeps it at a B.

Key features
- End-to-end encryption
- Events, invitations and shared calendars are encrypted end to end with what Tuta calls quantum-safe encryption, so the provider cannot read them.
- Encrypted reminders
- Event reminders arrive as push notifications on phones and computers. They are sent encrypted and kept hidden from the phone's operating system.
- Calendar sharing
- On paid plans a calendar can be shared with family or colleagues with read only, read and write, or write and manage sharing rights.
- Event invitations
- Paid plans can send and receive calendar invitations, and can send one encrypted to someone outside Tuta using a shared password.
- Apps on every platform
- Apps for Android and iPhone, open-source desktop clients for Windows, macOS and Linux, and a browser version. The Android app is also offered through F-Droid.
- Built into Tuta Mail
- The calendar shares an account with Tuta's encrypted email and contacts, and existing calendars can be imported in the settings.
