Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 18 of the 74 other calendar and scheduling apps we grade

Tuta Calendar is the encrypted calendar from Tutao GmbH, the German company behind Tuta Mail. Events, invitations, shared calendars and reminder notifications are encrypted end to end, and the apps are open source. It comes with every Tuta account: the free plan includes one calendar, while sharing, event invitations and unlimited calendars come with Tuta's paid plans, because the calendar is not sold on its own.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Tuta Calendar, taken from its own pages and our grades.

It comes with a Tuta account, free for one calendar.
From our report card of Tuta Calendar

As its pricing page puts it: €3 per month, paid yearly (€3.60 paid monthly).

Event reminders arrive as push notifications on phones and computers. They are sent encrypted and kept hidden from the phone's operating system.

  7. 7

The report card

Best for a calendar your provider can't read

Tuta Calendar encrypts events, invitations and reminder notifications end to end, and the apps are open source. It comes with a Tuta account, free for one calendar. But free has no sharing, no invitations and no offline use, paid features come only with Tuta's mail plans from €3 a month, and other calendars come in by import, with no two-way sync to Google or Outlook.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBTuta's lowest paid personal plan is €3 a month paid yearly, €3.60 monthly, taxes in, which lands in the cheaper quarter of calendar tools. And that buys Tuta's encrypted email, unlimited calendars and 20 GB of storage as well, because the calendar isn't sold on its own.
Free plan and trialCOne encrypted calendar and 1 GB, with apps on every platform. But no calendar sharing, no event invitations and no offline support, so it's a calendar for you alone. Not being able to invite anyone to anything is a cap you meet on day one.
FeaturesCEnd-to-end encryption on events, invitations and shared calendars, reminders hidden from your phone's operating system, and sharing with read or write rights on paid plans. Beyond the encryption it's a plain calendar, and the listing's own gap is the big one: other calendars come in by import, with no two-way sync.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record, and getting started means opening a Tuta account first, because the calendar isn't sold separately. Old calendars have to be imported in the settings rather than connected.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb, Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone and Android, with the Android app on F-Droid too. But the only thing it connects to is Tuta Mail, and no API is listed.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Tuta Calendar is for

  • Fits if you want a calendar that its own provider can't read
  • Works for people who already use Tuta Mail and want email, contacts and calendar in one account

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you need it kept in step with a Google or Outlook calendar, as it only imports
  • Tight if you're staying free and want to send invitations, share a calendar or work offline
  • Not for you if you only want a calendar, since the paid features come with Tuta's mail plans
  • Too light for linking other tools, as Tuta Mail is its only connection and no API is listed
  • Watch out: prices are in euros, with taxes included on personal plans and added on business plans

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want a calendar their provider cannot read
  • Tuta Mail users who want email, contacts and calendar in one account
  • Linux users looking for an open-source desktop calendar client

Worth knowing

  • The Free plan includes one calendar and has no calendar sharing, event invitations or offline support.
  • Calendar has no subscription of its own: paid features come with Tuta's paid personal or business mail plans.
  • Prices are listed in euros: personal plans include taxes, business plans exclude them, and totals can vary with payment platform fees and exchange rates.
  • Other calendars are brought in by import; the calendar page mentions no two-way sync with Google or Outlook calendars.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Tuta Calendar you could make: calendar. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 45 of the 74 other calendar and scheduling apps grade higher. It costs $40.34 a year. Tuta Calendar is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.

What you could make

  • Calendar: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • End-to-end encryption done properly.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.

What this rests on. Tuta Calendar’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
