Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 41 of the 65 other focus apps we grade

Pomodor is a Pomodoro timer that runs in the browser and can be installed as a progressive web app. It cycles through focus sessions, short breaks and a long break, with adjustable durations and number of rounds, a choice of notification sounds and a dark mode. It works without an account, and signing in with Google keeps your settings in sync across devices.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Pomodor, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for a bare Pomodoro timer in a browser tab

Pomodor is a plain Pomodoro timer in a browser tab: free, no account needed, and it runs offline once loaded.

  2. 2

    It is free

Pomodor has no paid plan at all. The web app loads and runs without payment or an account, and neither its pages nor its code list a paid plan. Signing in with Google is optional.

  3. 3

    It runs on Web

    Web.

  4. 4

    Adjustable timer

Work sessions run from 5 to 60 minutes, short breaks from 1 to 30 and long breaks from 1 to 45, over 2 to 15 rounds. The defaults are 25, 5 and 20 minutes across 4 rounds.

  5. 5

    Notifications and sounds

A notification marks the end of each session, with eight notification sounds to pick from, among them Bell, Guitar and Fairy. Notifications can be switched off in the settings.

  6. 6

    Timer in the tab title

The remaining time can be shown in the browser tab's title. The setting is on by default, alongside toggles for Autostart and dark mode.

  7. 7

That is against the other focus apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card

Best for a bare Pomodoro timer in a browser tab

Pomodor is a plain Pomodoro timer in a browser tab: free, no account needed, and it runs offline once loaded. That's about all it is. The site mentions labels and stats, but the app without signing in shows only a timer and its settings, Google is the only sign-in, and the GitHub repository is archived with updates now closed source.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAFree, in a category where paid plans start at $2.99 a month. The web app runs without payment, and neither its pages nor its code list a paid plan.
Free plan and trialAThe whole app is free and works without an account at all. Signing in with Google is optional, and only keeps your timer settings in step across devices.
FeaturesDWork sessions of 5 to 60 minutes, short and long breaks, 2 to 15 rounds, eight notification sounds, the countdown in the tab title. That's the lot: one timer, no record of your sessions. The site mentions labels and a stats page, but the app loaded without signing in shows only a timer and settings.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record. Open the page and press start. The defaults are the classic 25 minutes of work and 5 of break over 4 rounds.
Platforms and integrationsCWeb only, with nothing it connects to. You can install it from the browser as a standalone app on a phone or computer and it runs offline once loaded, but Google is the only sign-in on offer.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Pomodor is for

  • Fits if you want a plain Pomodoro timer in a browser tab and nothing else
  • Works for people who want the same timer settings on a laptop and a phone, through Google sign-in

Who it is not for

  • Too light for anyone who wants more than a timer, as that and its settings are all the app shows without signing in
  • Not for you if you want open-source software, because the GitHub repository is archived and updates now come from a closed-source one
  • Skip it if you want sync without a Google account, as Google is the only sign-in offered
  • Not for you if you want a native app, since it's web only and installs from the browser
  • Too light for blocking or session history, as nothing in it blocks a site or records your sessions

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want a plain Pomodoro timer in a browser tab
  • Keeping the same timer settings on several devices
  • Working offline once the app has been loaded

Worth knowing

  • The site's description mentions session labels and a stats page, but the app as loaded without signing in shows only a timer and settings.
  • It is no longer open source: the GitHub repository is archived, and its README says updates now come from a closed-source repository.
  • Google is the only sign-in method the app offers.
  • It is a web app only; on phones and computers it is installed from the browser as a progressive web app.
