Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.0
GPA, above 1 of the 20 other e-signature and proposal tools we grade
Proof, the company formerly known as Notarize, runs online notarization: signers meet a commissioned notary by video at any hour, either from its on-demand Notarize Network or from a business's own notaries. The same platform sends documents for e-signature and verifies identities, with separate plans for real estate closings. Businesses pay per transaction, with or without a monthly plan.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Proof, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for getting documents notarized without an office visit
It also sends documents for signing and checks IDs.
- 2
Paid plans start at $199 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $199 per month, plus transaction fees (Pro+).
- 3
There is a free plan
Pro plan: no monthly fee, but each transaction is charged: $25 per Notarize Network meeting, $4 per e-signature transaction and $4 per identity check.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, iOS and Android.
- 5
Online notarization
Signers meet a commissioned notary over video, 24/7, from the on-demand Notarize Network, and the notarizations are accepted in all 50 states.
- 6
In-house notaries
On Pro+ and the title plans a business can onboard its own notaries at a lower meeting rate and send overflow to the Notarize Network.
- 7
E-signatures
Send documents for signature at $4 a transaction. Pro+ adds signing order, signing groups and different signer requirements on one document.
- 8
A 2.0 GPA, above 1 of 20
That is against the other e-signature and proposal tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9

The report card
Best for getting documents notarized without an office visit
Proof, which used to be Notarize, puts a real notary on a video call at any hour, and the result is accepted in all 50 states. It also sends documents for signing and checks IDs. There's no monthly fee to start, but nothing is free either: every notary meeting is $25 and every signing $4.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Graded against its own alternatives, as notarization is its main job. Pro has no monthly fee: $25 a notary meeting, $4 per signing or ID check. For plain signing that soon passes DocuSign's $11 a month. Your own notaries, the API and branding need Pro+ at $199. |
| Free plan and trial | F | Nothing free. Pro costs nothing a month, but every notarization, signing and ID check is charged, and there's no trial. That's paying as you go, not trying it out. |
| Features | C | It does notarization fully: on-demand notaries 24/7, your own notaries on Pro+, ID checks to NIST IAL2 and online real estate closings. As a signing tool it's basic below Pro+, though, where signing order, signing groups and the API start. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but there's next to nothing to set up for a one-off: upload the document, and the signer checks their ID and meets a notary by video, at any hour. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone and Android, with ResWare, SoftPro 360, Encompass and SimpleNexus for real estate closings and an API on Pro+. No desktop app, and the integrations are all for title and lending. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Proof is for
- Great if a customer needs a document notarized tonight and can't get to an office
- Handy when title agencies and lenders want closings done online
- Good for businesses that need notarization, signing and ID checks in one account
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you mostly need everyday signatures, since each one is $4 where others charge a flat monthly fee
- Skip it if you want to try before paying, as there's no trial or free use
- Not for you if you want your own notaries on a budget, as that needs Pro+ at $199 a month
Good to know
Good for
- Businesses whose customers need documents notarized without an office visit
- Title agencies and lenders closing real estate deals online
- Teams that want notarization, e-signing and ID checks in one account
Worth knowing
- Transactions cost extra on every plan: a Notarize Network meeting is $25, plus $15 per extra seal, $10 per extra signer and $15 per on-demand witness.
- Using your own notaries, the API and custom branding need Pro+ at $199 a month; SSO and SCIM need the custom-priced Enterprise plan.
- Individuals use the Notarize site and app instead, at $25 per notarization; that account also signs documents at $4 per transaction.
- Title agencies and lenders have separate plans with their own per-closing rates, and the lender plan is priced through sales.

Part 04 · Standing
Where it stands
Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own
1/20
Other e-signature and proposal tools it is graded above
Proof's GPA of 2.0 is higher than 1 of the 20 other e-signature and proposal tools we grade, and level with 4.
It stands best on ease of use (B, above 15 of 20) and worst on free plan and trial (F, above 0).
Its paid plans start at $199 a month, against a middle price of $11 for the category: 20 of the 20 others that charge start lower.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.7 out of 4. 4 tools score higher and cost less.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Proof you could make: documents and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 15 of the 20 other e-signature and proposal tools grade higher. It costs $2,388 a year.
What you could make
- Documents and templates: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, ResWare, SoftPro 360 and Encompass among them, and has an API.
- People on the other end: referees. No app builder makes those.
What this rests on. Proof’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
