Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 57 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade
Quicksilver is a free, open-source launcher for macOS, developed by volunteers. A keyboard shortcut opens a command window where you pick an object such as an app, file or contact, then an action to perform on it and, if needed, a third item as its argument. Plugins extend it to mail, browsers, calendars and the clipboard, and triggers attach commands to shortcuts or mouse gestures. The site says every feature is free, with no paid version.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Quicksilver, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It's Mac only, and it checks a remote server for updates at every start.
- 1
Best for a free Mac launcher with no paid tier
Quicksilver is a free, open-source Mac launcher: press a shortcut, type a few letters to pick a file or app, then choose what to do with it.
- 2
It is free
Quicksilver has no paid plan at all. The whole app and its plugins are free, with no paid version, subscription or locked features. The source is under the Apache License 2.0, and the project takes PayPal donations for hosting and development.
- 3
It runs on macOS
macOS.
- 4
Object, action, argument commands
Commands are built in two or three panes: an object such as a file, an action such as E-mail To, and an argument when the action needs one.
- 5
Abbreviation matching that learns
An item matches when the typed letters appear in its name in order, and items you pick often rise in the results, so short abbreviations come to select them.
- 6
Its own catalog
Quicksilver builds a catalog of apps, files, bookmarks, contacts and more without depending on Spotlight, and rescans it in the background every 10 minutes by default.
- 7
A 2.8 GPA, above 57 of 94
That is against the other desktop utilities we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 8
Keep it
Quicksilver is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

The report card
Best for a free Mac launcher with no paid tier
Quicksilver is a free, open-source Mac launcher: press a shortcut, type a few letters to pick a file or app, then choose what to do with it. Many features arrive only as plugins you install and enable, the object-action-argument way of working takes learning, and volunteers keep it going on donations. It's Mac only, and it checks a remote server for updates at every start.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | It costs nothing and anyone can download and run it. No paid version, no subscription, no locked features, with the source open under the Apache License 2.0. The project takes PayPal donations for hosting and development. |
| Free plan and trial | A | The whole launcher is free, plugins included, as a disk image download or a Homebrew cask. With no paid tier, there's no limit to run into. |
| Features | B | It covers the launcher job: commands built from an object, an action and an argument, matching that learns what you pick, its own catalog of apps, files and contacts, triggers on shortcuts or gestures, plugins for mail, browsers and calendars, and a clipboard history. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and there's a learning curve. Opening an app is a shortcut and a few letters, but the object-action-argument way of thinking takes getting used to, and many features arrive only once you install and enable a plugin. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | Mac only. The latest version runs on macOS 10.14 or later, with older releases kept for older systems. Plugins connect it to Apple Mail, Gmail, Safari, Chrome, Firefox, 1Password and AppleScript. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Quicksilver is for
- Fits if you want to act on files, apps and contacts without leaving the keyboard
- Works for people who want a launcher with clipboard history and no paid tier
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you're on Windows or Linux, as it's macOS only
- Not for you if you want everything working out of the box, since many features need a plugin installed and enabled first
- Too light for anyone who needs a company behind it, because volunteers maintain it on donations
- Watch out: it contacts qs0.qsapp.com at startup to check for updates, which a network monitor may flag
- Tight if you're new to launchers: the object, action and argument model takes getting used to
Good to know
Good for
- Mac users who want to act on files, apps and contacts from the keyboard
- People who want a launcher with clipboard history and no paid tier
- Tinkerers who like plugins, triggers and AppleScript actions
Worth knowing
- macOS only; the latest version runs on macOS 10.14 or later, with older releases kept for older systems.
- Many features come from plugins, which have to be installed and enabled before they show up.
- It is maintained by volunteer contributors and relies on donations for hosting and development costs.
- On startup it contacts qs0.qsapp.com to check for new versions, which the manual notes a network monitor may flag.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Quicksilver is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces.
What you could not
- A launcher wired into the operating system.
- A clipboard history running in the background of your computer.
- A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, Apple Mail, Gmail and Safari among them.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Quicksilver’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
