Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 19 of the 35 other journaling apps we grade

Reflection is a journaling app for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and the web with a built-in AI coach. As you write, the coach offers a follow-up question drawn from the entry, and you can also speak entries, hold a spoken Voice Call that is saved as a transcript, or ask questions of your past entries. More than 100 guided programs cover topics such as gratitude and anxiety. A free plan covers unlimited entries; Premium adds unlimited AI search and insights, full sync, rich text and PDF export.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Reflection, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The free plan has unlimited entries but one photo per entry and syncing it only calls limited.

Best for journaling with an AI coach, by text or voice

Reflection is a journal with an AI coach that asks a follow-up question after you write, plus Voice Calls saved as transcripts. The free plan has unlimited entries but one photo per entry and syncing it only calls limited. Premium is $69 a year or $8 a month, at the dear end of journaling apps. Entries aren't end-to-end encrypted, the AI runs on Google Gemini and Voice Call is missing on Mac and the web, so look elsewhere if privacy comes first.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCPremium is $5.75 a month billed annually, so $69 a year, which puts it right at the dear end of this category, where the middle is $4.17. Month to month it's $8. The lifetime purchase on the US App Store is $249.99, which is a lot of journaling to get back.
Free plan and trialCFree Forever has unlimited entries, prompts, reminders, search, monthly and annual reviews and import and export. The caps are the ones you'd notice: one photo an entry, and syncing described only as limited, with no number given.
FeaturesCOn record: an AI coach that asks a follow-up from what you just wrote, voice entries, Voice Calls saved as transcripts, Ask Your Journal, 100-plus guided programs and an Insights page. The gaps it states: entries aren't end-to-end encrypted, and Voice Call is missing on Mac and the web.
Ease of useA4.73 from about 1,100 App Store ratings, just clear of the bar. Guided programs lead you one prompt at a time, the coach asks the next question, and you can talk instead of typing.
Platforms and integrationsAiPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and the web, with a beta MCP server on Premium so Claude or ChatGPT can reach your journal. No Windows or Linux app, where it's the browser, and Voice Call is phones and iPad only.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Reflection is for

  • Fits if you want an AI coach to ask a follow-up question as you write
  • Works for following a guided program on gratitude, anxiety or relationships, or talking an entry out instead of typing

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want end-to-end encryption, as entries are encrypted at rest and in transit only, and the AI runs on Google Gemini
  • Tight if you're staying free: one photo per entry, limited syncing, and no formatted text or PDF export
  • Not for you if you want Voice Call on a Mac or the web, where it isn't offered
  • Pricey if you pay monthly at $8, and the lifetime purchase on the US App Store is $249.99
  • Watch out: there's no Windows or Linux app, so on those systems it's the browser

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want follow-up questions from an AI coach as they write
  • Journaling by voice, including spoken back-and-forth conversations
  • Following guided programs on gratitude, anxiety or relationships

Worth knowing

  • The free plan allows one photo per entry and limited syncing; multiple photos, rich text, PDF export and unlimited cross-device sync need Premium.
  • Entries are encrypted at rest and in transit, not end-to-end, and the AI features are powered by Google Gemini.
  • Voice Call is listed for iPhone, iPad and Android only, not for the Mac or web apps.
  • No Windows or Linux app is listed; on those systems the journal is used in a browser.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Reflection you would be making dictation that types into any app on your computer. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It costs $69 a year.

What you could make

  • Daily notes and templates: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Dictation that types into any app on your computer.
  • An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
  • Apps for macOS, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • People on the other end: coaches. No app builder makes those.

What this rests on. Reflection’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
