Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

3.0

GPA, above 25 of the 26 other AI app builders we grade

Replit is a browser-based development platform built around Agent, which turns a natural-language description into a working web or mobile app and publishes it. Projects come with a managed PostgreSQL database, file storage, authentication and hosting, so an app can go live without leaving the workspace. Agent has a no-cost Free Mode with plan-based limits, while the Power and Max modes are billed by effort from monthly credits.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Replit, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for building, hosting and publishing in one place

Replit is where you describe an app and get a working one, hosted and live, with the database, login and hosting built in and iPhone and Android apps as well as websites.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $18 a month

As its pricing page puts it: $18 per month, billed annually; $20 billed monthly (Core).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Starter plan: Agent chat and Free Mode with a daily cap, Lite build only, monthly credits for cloud usage, and 1 published app that goes offline after 30 days.

  4. 4

    It runs on 6 platforms

Web, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

Agent with Free, Power and Max modes

Agent builds, debugs and iterates on an app from chat. Free Mode costs no credits within a plan allowance; Power and Max use monthly credits and need Core or Pro.

  6. 6

    Built-in database, storage and auth

Replit-managed integrations include a PostgreSQL database, App Storage for files, Replit Auth sign-in and custom domains, with no API keys to set up.

  7. 7

    One-click publishing

Apps publish to a live URL from the workspace. Starter includes 1 published app for 30 days; Core and Pro allow unlimited apps and remove the Made with Replit badge.

  8. 8

    A 3.0 GPA, above 25 of 26

That is against the other AI app builders we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace Replit you would be making a tool that builds and hosts other apps. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for building, hosting and publishing in one place

Replit is where you describe an app and get a working one, hosted and live, with the database, login and hosting built in and iPhone and Android apps as well as websites. Core is $18 a month on yearly billing. But the free plan's one published app goes offline after 30 days, connectors and Plan Mode need Core, and Power and Max work is billed by effort on top.

ToolGPA report cardReplitGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCCore is $18 a month billed annually, $20 monthly, landing mid-table against the $19 middle for builders here. It includes $20 of monthly credits, unlimited published apps and up to 5 builders. But Power and Max work is billed by effort, and past your credits it's pay-as-you-go.
Free plan and trialCStarter costs nothing and gives you Agent chat, Free Mode and Lite build. The caps arrive quickly though: a daily limit, no connectors, no Plan Mode, and the single published app comes down after 30 days. Fine for a look, no use for keeping something live.
FeaturesBIt covers the whole job: Agent builds, debugs and reworks from chat, with a PostgreSQL database, file storage, sign-in and custom domains built in and no API keys to set up, one-click publishing, and native iOS and Android apps as well as web. Lovable covers the core too, so no A.
Ease of useA4.7 from about 21,100 App Store ratings. You describe the app and Agent builds it, with the database and hosting already set up, so there's nothing to wire up before you see something working.
Platforms and integrationsAWeb, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android. Connectors reach Google Drive, Gmail, GitHub, GitLab, Linear, Jira and Stripe, though most need a paid plan. One gap: the mobile app builds websites and web apps, and a native iOS project has to be started on the web.
Grade point averageVery good, out of 4.03.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Replit is for

  • Fits if you want an app built, hosted and published in one place
  • Works for small teams, since Core covers up to 5 builders with no per-user fee

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're staying free, with Lite build only, a daily cap and a published app that goes offline after 30 days
  • Skip it if you hate meters, because Power and Max work is billed by effort and past your credits it's pay-as-you-go
  • Not for you if you want to start a native iPhone app from your phone, as that begins on the web
  • Watch out: connectors, Plan Mode, full build and Replit AI Integrations all need Core or Pro
  • Pricey if you need rollover, parallel agents or more than 5 builders, since Pro is $90 a month billed annually

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want an app built, hosted and published in one place
  • Builders who expect to read or edit the code in a full cloud workspace
  • Small teams sharing one plan: Core covers 5 builders and Pro 15, with no per-user fee

Worth knowing

  • Starter is limited to Lite build with daily caps, and its single published app goes offline after 30 days.
  • Connectors, Plan Mode, full build and Replit AI Integrations all require Core or Pro.
  • Power and Max mode work is billed by effort from monthly credits, and usage beyond them is pay-as-you-go.
  • The mobile app is for building websites and web apps; native iOS app projects have to be started on the web.

Part 02 · Tips

Insider tips

What most people miss: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches

6

Things most people miss, each from its own help pages

The things about Replit that are easy to miss until they cost you: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches at renewal or when you leave. Each one is from Replit’s own pages, linked beside it.

Read on Oct 17, 2026. Read from Replit's docs (managing spend, AI billing, billing and refunds, checkpoints and rollbacks, Agent modes, projects and files) on 17 October 2026. Not tried out: these tips are what its own pages say.

  1. 1

    Setting

Set a usage limit so Agent can't spend past your monthly credits

Go to Settings, Usage, and pick Manage limits under Account usage. A usage limit caps what you spend beyond your credits, and a shutdown limit suspends services at a hard cap. Want to spend only a credit pack you bought? Its docs say set the limits to $0.01.

    docs.replit.com
  2. 2

    Pay less

Do your planning in Free mode, as paid modes charge for it

Its billing page says Plan Mode in a paid mode can charge for the thinking even when no code changes. Free mode is pitched at questions, planning and small first passes. Hover over the usage icon in the Agent tab to see what each checkpoint cost.

    docs.replit.com
  3. 3

    Easy to miss

Rolling back code leaves your database alone unless you tick it

Rollback to here in the Agent tab restores files, packages and Agent's memory of the chat, but not the development database by default. Tick Database under Additional rollback options for that. The live database needs point-in-time restore instead.

    docs.replit.com
  4. 4

    Shortcut

Press Cmd+Shift+I to switch Agent modes without leaving the chat

It cycles Free, Power and Max (Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows), but does nothing while Auto is on. Your mode and model choices belong to you, not the project, so a collaborator on Max won't flip you onto it.

    docs.replit.com
  5. 5

    Renewal

Extra usage is billed mid-month, and Agent charges aren't refunded

Usage past your included credits is charged when it hits a billing threshold, not at month end, and Agent and AI charges are non-refundable. If a failed payment takes your app down, it won't come back on its own: open Publishing and press Publish.

    docs.replit.com
  6. 6

    Leaving

A zip download leaves out your secrets, database and publish setup

The three-dot menu at the top of the file tree has Download as zip. If it fails on a big project, run zip -r project.zip . in the Shell. Secrets, the database and deployment settings aren't in the copy, so note them down before you go.

Replit's GPA of 3.0 is higher than 25 of the 26 other AI app builders we grade.

It stands best on ease of use (A, above 24 of 26) and worst on free plan and trial (C, above 1).

Its paid plans start at $18 a month, against a middle price of $19 for the category: 10 of the 26 others that charge start lower.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Replit you would be making a tool that builds and hosts other apps. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 25 of the 26 other AI app builders we grade. It costs $216 a year.

What you could not

  • A tool that builds and hosts other apps.
  • An AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it.
  • A builder that other people can use without writing code.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, GitHub, GitLab and Google Drive among them.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Replit’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
