Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 8 of the 33 other team communication apps we grade
Ryver puts group messaging, task management and voice and video calls in a single app. Conversations happen in forums, private teams and direct messages, with topics for threaded discussion, and a chat message can be converted into a task on a personal or team board. Plans for up to 30 users are a flat monthly price for the whole team instead of a per-seat fee.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Ryver, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for chat and task boards on one flat bill
Ryver rolls group chat, task boards and calls into one app at a flat team price: $69 a month covers up to 12 users, with unlimited messages, storage and search.
- 2
Paid plans start at $69 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $69 per month for up to 12 users.
- 3
You can try it first
14-day free trial, no credit card required
- 4
It runs on 6 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android.
- 5
Forums, teams and direct messages
Chat takes place in open forums, private teams and one-to-one direct messages. Messages, groups, storage and search are unlimited on every plan.
- 6
Topic-threaded chat
Topics keep a discussion threaded under its own subject, apart from the running chat. Topics are unlimited on every plan.
- 7
Task management
Personal and team task boards with checklists, tags, assignees, due dates and alerts. A chat message can be converted into one or more tasks.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 8 of 33
That is against the other team communication apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Ryver you would be making chat that a whole team counts on staying up. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for chat and task boards on one flat bill
Ryver rolls group chat, task boards and calls into one app at a flat team price: $69 a month covers up to 12 users, with unlimited messages, storage and search. There's no free plan, the price is the same for 3 users as for 12, guests take up seats, and calls are still labeled beta with only 5 people on each. Single sign-on waits for Enterprise.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Starter is $69 a month for up to 12 users, Standard $129 for up to 30, and past that it's $4 a user. Fill a plan and that's $4.30 to $5.75 a head; with five of you Starter works out at nearly $14 each. Single sign-on is Enterprise-only. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. There's a 14-day trial and it asks for no card, then the cheapest way in is $69 a month however few of you there are. Guests count towards the user limit too, so a client in a forum costs you a seat. |
| Features | C | Open forums, private teams and direct messages with topic-threaded discussion, and task boards you can turn a message into, all unlimited on every plan. But Ryver labels its own voice and video calls beta and caps them at 5 users per call, so the team meeting happens somewhere else. |
| Ease of use | C | No App Store rating on record. Forums, teams, topics and task boards all have to be set up and explained before anyone settles in, and the forum-and-topic split is its own idea rather than the channels people already know. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android, with a REST API, inbound and outbound webhooks and bots for developers. Google Drive, Dropbox, Box and Outlook connect directly; anything else goes through Zapier, which needs its own subscription. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Ryver is for
- Fits if your team of 12 to 30 wants one flat monthly price instead of a fee per seat
- Works for teams moving off Slack or Trello, since Ryver can import from both
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want a free plan, because after the 14-day trial it's $69 a month
- Pricey if there are only a few of you, as Starter costs the same for 3 users as for 12
- Not for you if you hold team meetings on video, with calls in beta and capped at 5 users
- Watch out: guests count toward the user limit, so a client in a forum takes a seat
- Tight if you need single sign-on or premium support, as both are Enterprise-only with no published price
Good to know
Good for
- Teams of up to 30 that prefer a flat monthly price to per-seat billing
- Teams that want chat and task boards without paying for two tools
- Teams moving from Slack or Trello, both of which Ryver can import from
Worth knowing
- There is no free plan: after the 14-day trial the lowest tier is $69 a month for up to 12 users.
- Voice and video calls are labeled beta and limited to 5 users per call.
- Guests count toward a plan's user limit, which the feature list defines as members plus guests.
- Single sign-on, premium support and advanced team management are limited to Enterprise.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Ryver you would be making chat that a whole team counts on staying up. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 14 of the 33 other team communication apps grade higher. It costs $828 a year.
What you could make
- Tasks: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Chat that a whole team counts on staying up.
- Video calls.
- Storing and serving files for other people.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- It plugs into other products, Google Drive, Dropbox and Box among them, and has an API.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: single sign-on.
What this rests on. Ryver’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
