Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 15 of the 21 other web hosts we grade

ScalaHosting sells shared web hosting, managed and unmanaged cloud VPS, and reseller hosting, managed through its own SPanel control panel or cPanel. Its in-house tools include the SShield real-time security system and a WordPress Manager with automatic updates, staging and an AI site builder. Shared plans are sold on 1-, 12- and 36-month terms, with lower prices for the first term.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about ScalaHosting, taken from its own pages and our grades.

SPanel or cPanel with one-click restores, but there's still a site, email and maybe a domain to set up.

  4. 4

Accounts can run on ScalaHosting's own SPanel, offered free, or on cPanel. Some tools, such as SShield and the AI site builder, come only with SPanel.

  5. 5

    SShield and malware scanning

SShield watches for attacks in real time, and every shared plan lists real-time malware protection, brute-force protection and a WordPress malware scan tool.

  6. 6

    WordPress Manager

The report card

Best for small business sites with hosting and email

ScalaHosting runs on its own free SPanel, so you're not paying for cPanel licenses, and adds real-time SShield security, daily offsite backups and unlimited mailboxes. Three years of Mini cost $106.20 upfront, which is cheap. The catch: Mini hosts one site with no free domain, and several tools only work on SPanel.

ToolGPA report cardScalaHostingGraded Oct 17, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAMini is $106.20 upfront for 36 months, so two years cost $106.20, about $4.43 a month, under the $5.97 an A needs, with a third year thrown in. A 12-month term plus a year at $11.95 would be $178.80. Monthly is $11.95.
Free plan and trialFNo free plan and no trial on record. Monthly billing has no intro price either, so the cheapest way in still means paying.
FeaturesBDaily offsite backups, SShield real-time protection, a malware scanner, WordPress Manager with staging, an AI site builder and unlimited mailboxes with blacklist monitoring. Mini has no free domain, but the core job is covered.
Ease of useCNo app store rating to go on. SPanel or cPanel with one-click restores, but there's still a site, email and maybe a domain to set up.
Platforms and integrationsCA web panel only. Cloudflare, Google Lighthouse, Softaculous and the apps it installs are named, but no API is on record.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who ScalaHosting is for

  • Great if you want hosting and email at your domain on one plan
  • Handy when you'd rather not pay for cPanel licenses
  • Good for sites that may move from shared hosting to a cloud VPS later

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you need more than one site or a free domain, as both start on Start
  • Skip it if you want cPanel and SShield together, as SShield is SPanel only
  • Pricey if you pay monthly, at $11.95 with no intro price

Good to know

Good for

  • Small business sites that want hosting and email on one plan
  • Sites expected to move from shared hosting to a cloud VPS later
  • Buyers who would rather not pay for cPanel licenses

Worth knowing

  • Mini hosts one website and has no free domain; a domain comes with Start and higher plans.
  • Several tools, including SShield, the AI site builder and the WordPress malware scan, work only with SPanel, not cPanel.
  • Managed cloud plans start at $29.95 a month, and reseller hosting and larger VPS plans are sold separately.

Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own

15/21

Other web hosts it is graded above

ScalaHosting's GPA of 2.2 is higher than 15 of the 21 other web hosts we grade, and level with 6.

It stands best on value for money (A, above 16 of 21) and worst on free plan and trial (F, above 0).

On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.3 out of 4. Nothing scores higher for less, though at least one tool matches that score at a lower price.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace ScalaHosting you would be making servers kept running, patched and backed up for you. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.2 is higher than 15 of the 21 other web hosts we grade. It costs $35.40 a year.

What you could not

  • Servers kept running, patched and backed up for you.
  • An engine that recognises new malware as it appears.
  • It plugs into other products, WordPress, WooCommerce and cPanel among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. ScalaHosting’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
