Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 8 of the 26 other AI app builders we grade
Softgen builds full-stack web apps from plain-English instructions, starting from a Next.js codebase and adding a Supabase backend, payments and other integrations as asked. Each project lives in a GitHub repository the customer owns and deploys to Vercel, which Softgen says keeps an app running after the subscription is canceled. Two paid plans differ in monthly credits, project count and the AI models on offer.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Softgen, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for a Next.js app that lives in your own GitHub
Softgen builds a full-stack web app from plain English and puts the code in a GitHub repository you own, as a standard Next.js project that deploys to Vercel and, Softgen says, keeps running after you cancel.
- 2
Paid plans start at $25 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $25 per month (Starter).
- 3
You can try it first
Free trial with 75 credits and no card required. GitHub export and publishing need a paid plan.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Prompt-to-app on Next.js
A plain-English description produces a full-stack web app on Next.js. Softgen asks follow-up questions and writes a development plan before it builds.
- 6
Choice of AI models
Starter offers GPT-5.1 and Gemini 3.1 Pro. Pro opens more than 12 models, including Claude 4.5 and GPT-5.4.
- 7
Managed Supabase backend
A platform-managed Supabase database is included on both plans, with backups on Pro. A Supabase project of your own can be connected instead.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 8 of 26
That is against the other AI app builders we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Softgen you would be making a tool that builds and hosts other apps. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for a Next.js app that lives in your own GitHub
Softgen builds a full-stack web app from plain English and puts the code in a GitHub repository you own, as a standard Next.js project that deploys to Vercel and, Softgen says, keeps running after you cancel. But it's web apps only, there's no free plan beyond a 75-credit trial, Starter at $25 caps you at 10 projects and two models, and custom domains need $49.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Starter is $25 a month, the line where the dearest quarter of builders here begins, and the pricing page shows no annual option at all, so there's no discount to chase. It brings 500 credits, 10 projects, a managed Supabase backend and GitHub export. Custom domains and collaborators need Pro at $49. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. The trial is 75 credits with no card wanted, granted once and never refilled, and GitHub export and publishing both need a paid plan. Enough to watch it build something, not enough to ship it. |
| Features | C | It does the Next.js web-app job fully: follow-up questions and a written plan first, then a full-stack build with a managed Supabase backend, Stripe payments and Resend email, in a GitHub repo you own that deploys to Vercel. But it's a smaller job than the rest here, and Starter caps you at 10 projects and two models. |
| Ease of use | B | No rating on record. You write plain English, it comes back with questions and a plan before touching anything, the Supabase backend is managed for you, and deploying is one click. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A web app, with nothing on desktop or phone, and what it builds is a web app too. It connects to Supabase, Vercel, GitHub, Stripe, Resend, PostHog, Google Analytics and Intercom, with one-click setup for ad pixels and support widgets. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Softgen is for
- Fits if you want your MVP as a standard Next.js codebase in your own GitHub
- Works for teams on Pro, where collaborators join without extra seat fees
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you need a phone app, because it builds web apps only, as Next.js projects
- Not for you if you want a free plan, as the trial is a one-time 75 credits and can't export or publish
- Pricey if you want your own domain, collaborators or backups, since those are listed on Pro at $49 a month
- Tight if you run lots of projects or want model choice, as Starter stops at 10 projects and two AI models
- Watch out: the pricing page shows monthly billing only, with no annual discount
Good to know
Good for
- Founders who want an MVP as a standard Next.js codebase in their own GitHub
- Builders who want to pick the AI model per task
- Teams on Pro, where collaborators join without extra seat fees
Worth knowing
- The free trial is a one-time grant of 75 credits, and GitHub export and publishing need the Starter plan.
- Starter is limited to 10 projects and two AI models; unlimited projects and 12+ models need Pro.
- Custom domains, collaborators, Supabase backups and credit rollover are Pro features.
- It builds web apps only, as Next.js projects, and the pricing page shows monthly billing with no annual option.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Softgen you would be making a tool that builds and hosts other apps. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 12 of the 26 other AI app builders grade higher. It costs $300 a year.
What you could not
- A tool that builds and hosts other apps.
- A builder that other people can use without writing code.
- It plugs into other products, Supabase, Vercel and GitHub among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- Hooks into the device itself: widgets.
What this rests on. Softgen’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
