Who each one suits
Bolt
- Prototyping a web app or site from a prompt without a local setup
- Developers who want to switch between prompting and editing code
- Marketers and founders who need hosting and a custom domain in one place
Softgen
- Founders who want an MVP as a standard Next.js codebase in their own GitHub
- Builders who want to pick the AI model per task
- Teams on Pro, where collaborators join without extra seat fees
Worth knowing
Bolt
- The free plan stops at 300K tokens a day and 1M a month, and larger projects use more tokens per message.
- Custom domains and Supabase databases need a paid plan, and free sites show a Made in Bolt badge.
- Free sites go offline for the rest of the month once they pass 10 GB of bandwidth or 333,333 requests.
- On Teams, tokens are allotted to each paid member and are not shared across the team.
Softgen
- The free trial is a one-time grant of 75 credits, and GitHub export and publishing need the Starter plan.
- Starter is limited to 10 projects and two AI models; unlimited projects and 12+ models need Pro.
- Custom domains, collaborators, Supabase backups and credit rollover are Pro features.
- It builds web apps only, as Next.js projects, and the pricing page shows monthly billing with no annual option.
Key features
Bolt
- Prompt-to-app building
- Describe an idea in chat and Bolt generates a full-stack project using JavaScript-based web frameworks. Plan Mode lets you discuss an approach before any code is written.
- Bolt Cloud
- Hosting, databases, user authentication and domains are built into each project. Paid plans raise the hosting allowance to 30 GB of bandwidth and 1 million requests a month.
- Code view and GitHub
- Project files can be read and edited directly in Code view, which uses no tokens, and a project can be connected to GitHub or started from an existing repository.
- Design imports
- Start a project from a Figma frame or a Google Stitch design, or add a design system so that generated screens follow existing components.
- Mobile apps through Expo
- Web apps are built natively in Bolt, while mobile apps for iOS and Android are built and shipped through its Expo integration.
- Teams workspace
- A shared workspace with centralized billing, member and integration controls, team prompts and private NPM registry support, priced per member.
Softgen
- Prompt-to-app on Next.js
- A plain-English description produces a full-stack web app on Next.js. Softgen asks follow-up questions and writes a development plan before it builds.
- Choice of AI models
- Starter offers GPT-5.1 and Gemini 3.1 Pro. Pro opens more than 12 models, including Claude 4.5 and GPT-5.4.
- Managed Supabase backend
- A platform-managed Supabase database is included on both plans, with backups on Pro. A Supabase project of your own can be connected instead.
- GitHub repository you own
- Each project lives in a GitHub repo that can be opened in an editor such as Cursor or VS Code, and existing repos can be imported. GitHub export is on both paid plans.
- Vercel deployment
- Apps deploy to Vercel in one click, through Softgen's platform setup or your own Vercel account. Custom domains are listed on the Pro plan.
- One-click integrations
- Stripe payments and Resend email are part of the core stack, with one-click setup for analytics, ad pixels and support widgets such as PostHog, Meta Pixel and Intercom.
