Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 4 of the 14 other antivirus apps we grade
Sophos Home is the home edition of Sophos's business security software, sold as one plan, Sophos Home Premium. A single subscription covers up to 10 Windows and Mac computers plus any number of phones and tablets, all managed from one web dashboard. It adds ransomware rollback, web protection and parental web filtering to real-time scanning.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Sophos Home, taken from its own pages and our grades.
You install it on each computer and it runs, with the web dashboard there when you want it.
- 1
Best for looking after the family's computers from one place
It's plain antivirus, though: no VPN, password manager or identity monitoring.
- 2
Paid plans start at $5 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $59.99 per year for 10 computers at renewal, after a first year for $44.99.
- 3
You can try it first
30-day free trial of Sophos Home Premium, no credit card required
- 4
It runs on 4 platforms
Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
- 5
AI threat detection
Deep learning models flag malware that has never been seen before, alongside real-time scanning against the SophosLabs threat databases.
- 6
Ransomware rollback
Blocks ransomware from encrypting personal files and photos, and rolls back any files it managed to change.
- 7
Web protection
Blocks compromised and phishing sites, adds browser protection for banking and shopping, and scans downloads automatically.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 4 of 14
That is against the other antivirus apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Sophos Home you would be making an engine that recognises new malware as it appears. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for looking after the family's computers from one place
Sophos Home is the home edition of business security software, and one plan covers up to 10 Windows and Mac computers plus any number of phones and tablets. Two years cost $104.98, which is cheap for a whole household, and you can manage relatives' computers from a web dashboard. It's plain antivirus, though: no VPN, password manager or identity monitoring.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Premium is $44.99 the first year, then $59.99, so two years cost $104.98, about $4.37 a month, a little above the middle of antivirus prices. That covers 10 computers and unlimited phones, so per device it's cheap for a big household. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan, but a 30-day trial of Premium with no credit card needed. After that it stops protecting unless you buy. |
| Features | C | It does the antivirus job fully: real-time scanning with AI detection, ransomware rollback, web protection, parental web filtering and remote management. But it's a smaller product than the suites around it, with no VPN, password manager or identity monitoring. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record. You install it on each computer and it runs, with the web dashboard there when you want it. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Windows and Mac computers plus iPhone, iPad and Android, all managed from one web dashboard. No API or integrations on record, so it stops at B. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Sophos Home you would be making an engine that recognises new malware as it appears. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 8 of the 14 other antivirus apps grade higher. It costs $59.99 a year.
What you could not
- An engine that recognises new malware as it appears.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Sophos Home’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
