Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 25 of the 43 other habit trackers we grade

stickK is a goal-setting platform built around Commitment Contracts: you name a goal, set a timeline and report on it daily, weekly or once at the end. A Referee can verify each report, Supporters can follow along, and you can put money at stake that is charged whenever a reporting period fails. It was founded by two Yale professors and a Yale management student, and it runs in a browser and in iOS and Android apps.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about stickK, taken from its own pages and our grades.

But once one begins you can't delete it or change the goal, a late report counts as a failure, and group Campaign prices aren't published.
From our report card of stickK
  1. 1

Best for goals you'll only keep with money on the line

stickK makes you sign a contract with yourself: name a goal, pick a Referee, and put money down if you choose.

  2. 2

    There is a free plan

Personal Commitment Contracts are free to create in any number, with a Referee, Supporters and a journal. Money stakes are optional and are charged only when a reporting period fails.

  3. 3

    It runs on 3 platforms

    Web, iOS and Android.

  4. 4

    Commitment Contracts

A contract with yourself that fixes a goal, a start and end date and a reporting schedule. After creation you can only add a Referee, invite Supporters and change its privacy settings.

  5. 5

    Reports on a fixed schedule

You report success or failure daily, weekly or once at the end. A report not filed within 24 hours (daily) or 72 hours (weekly and single-report contracts) counts as unsuccessful.

  6. 6

    Referees

A person you invite verifies your reports and has the final word: a Referee can turn a reported success into a failure. Without one, the contract runs "On Your Honor".

  7. 7

    A 2.8 GPA, above 25 of 43

That is against the other habit trackers we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card

Best for goals you'll only keep with money on the line

stickK makes you sign a contract with yourself: name a goal, pick a Referee, and put money down if you choose. Miss a report and your card is charged within 48 hours, with the cash going to an anti-charity or to stickK, which keeps 50% of anti-charity stakes. Personal contracts are free. But once one begins you can't delete it or change the goal, a late report counts as a failure, and group Campaign prices aren't published.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyBPersonal contracts are free, in any number. Two caveats: stickK keeps 50% of any stake you forfeit to an anti-charity, plus contract costs, and the paid Campaign plans for groups have no price published outside an admin account.
Free plan and trialAFree with no cap on contracts: as many personal Commitment Contracts as you like, each with a Referee, Supporters and a journal with notes and photos. Money only moves if you put a stake down and then miss a report.
FeaturesCOn record: fixed goals and dates, daily, weekly or single reports, a Referee who can overrule a success, stakes charged within 48 hours, Supporters, a journal and group Campaigns. But the listing names the gap: once a contract begins you can't change the goal or delete it.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record, and the rules want reading first: a daily report not filed within 24 hours counts as a failure, 72 hours for weekly ones, a Referee has the final word, and cancelling needs a physician's medical excuse form.
Platforms and integrationsBThe web plus iPhone and Android apps, which covers a laptop and a pocket, and a contract can be reported from any of them. Nothing it connects to, though: no integrations and no API, so no fitness tracker or app can report for you.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who stickK is for

  • Fits if you only follow through when money or your reputation is on the line
  • Works for people with a friend, coach or family member willing to check reports as Referee

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you might change your mind, as a contract can't be deleted once it begins, short of a physician's form
  • Not for you if you just want to tick off small daily habits, as everything here is a contract with an end date
  • Pricey if you set a big stake and slip, since your card is charged within 48 hours of each failed period
  • Watch out: a daily report not filed within 24 hours counts as a failure, and stickK keeps 50% of anti-charity stakes
  • Watch out: paid Campaign prices show only inside an admin account, and older help articles describe outdated terms

Good to know

Good for

  • People who follow through when money or reputation is on the line
  • Goals that a friend, coach or family member can verify as Referee
  • Clubs, teams and workplaces running a shared challenge as a Campaign

Worth knowing

  • stickK keeps 50% of forfeited stakes sent to an anti-charity, plus contract costs, under its contract terms last updated June 12, 2024.
  • Those terms removed a $5 creation fee and ended charity and friend-or-foe recipients for new contracts; older help articles still describe all three.
  • A contract cannot be deleted once it begins; the terms allow cancellation only with a physician's medical excuse form.
  • Prices for the paid Campaign plans (All-access and Pro) are not published in the help center; they appear inside a Campaign admin account.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of stickK you could make: goals and habit tracking. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

What you could make

  • Goals and habit tracking: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • People on the other end: referees. No app builder makes those.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.

What this rests on. stickK’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
