Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 15 of the 40 other automation tools we grade

Tasker is an Android app that runs tasks, which are sets of actions, when a context applies: an app in use, a time, a date, a location, an event or a gesture. Tasks can also be started by hand from widgets, shortcuts and quick setting tiles. The Google Play listing cites more than 350 actions and 130 states and events, and the app is sold as a one-time purchase.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Tasker, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No rating on record, and profiles, contexts and tasks is a model you have to sit down and learn before anything useful happens.

The report card

Best for fine control over how an Android phone behaves

Tasker is an Android app that runs a task, built from more than 350 actions, when a context such as a place, a time or an app applies. It costs $4.49 once on Google Play. There's no free version, only a 7-day trial you download from the developer's site. It's Android only, a few actions need a rooted phone, and starting tasks from a PC means buying the separate Join app.

ToolGPA report cardTaskerGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyA$4.49 once on Google Play in the US, for the whole app, forever. The middle of this category asks $19 a month, so Tasker costs less than a week of it, and Google Play Pass subscribers get it without paying at all.
Free plan and trialCNothing free to keep. There's a 7-day trial, but you have to go and download it from the developer's own site, because the Google Play copy is paid from the first tap. The listing doesn't say whether the trial asks for a card.
FeaturesBFor what a phone can be made to do, this is the full job: 350-plus actions, 130-plus states and events, Scenes for your own screens, App Factory to turn a project into an app, HTTP calls and plugins from other apps. It stops at the phone, though. It won't wire your cloud apps together.
Ease of useCNo rating on record, and profiles, contexts and tasks is a model you have to sit down and learn before anything useful happens. A handful of actions, Kill App among them, want a rooted phone. Widgets and tiles are the easy part.
Platforms and integrationsDOne operating system, Android, and that's it. The developer's site lists no iPhone, desktop or web version, and setting a task off from a PC or another phone means buying the separate Join app. HTTP actions and plugins are the only way out.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Tasker is for

  • Fits if you want detailed control over how your Android phone behaves
  • Works for routines that should fire by place, time, app or Wi-Fi network

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you have an iPhone or want it on a computer, since there's no iOS, desktop or web version
  • Not for you if you want a free version, as it's a 7-day trial and then $4.49
  • Tight if you won't root your phone, since a few actions such as Kill App require it
  • Watch out: the trial is a direct download from the developer's site, because the Google Play copy is paid from the start
  • Watch out: setting tasks off from a PC or another phone needs the separate Join app

Good to know

Good for

  • Android users who want detailed control over how their phone behaves
  • Automations tied to location, time, the app in use or device state
  • People who prefer a one-time purchase to a subscription

Worth knowing

  • Tasker is an application for Android only; the developer's site lists no iOS, desktop or web version.
  • A few actions, such as Kill App and Mobile Data on some devices, require root access.
  • The 7-day trial is a direct download from the developer's site; the Google Play version is paid from the start.
  • Triggering tasks from another Android device or a PC needs the separate Join app.

Part 04 · Standing

Where it stands

Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own

15/40

Other automation tools it is graded above

Tasker's GPA of 2.4 is higher than 15 of the 40 other automation tools we grade, and level with 8.

It stands best on value for money (A, above 27 of 40) and worst on platforms and integrations (D, above 0).

Every bar is all 41 automation tools we grade, cut by the letter each got. Tasker’s own letter is outlined.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Tasker you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It costs $4.49, paid once.

What you could not

  • Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
  • A real app for Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • Hooks into the device itself: widgets.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Tasker’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
