Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 28 of the 42 other time tracking apps we grade

TMetric is a time tracking platform from Devart aimed at service teams, agencies and freelancers who bill by the hour. Time is captured with a timer in its apps or through a timer button that browser extensions add to other web apps, then turned into reports, budgets and client invoices. The Business plan adds time off, team timesheets and activity monitoring with screenshots.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about TMetric, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The browser extension puts a timer button inside Jira, Asana and GitHub, so you start the clock where the work already is.
From our grade for ease of use

As its pricing page puts it: $5.83 per seat / month, billed annually ($7 billed monthly).

Web, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.

  6. 6

    Timer button in web apps

Browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and Opera add a TMetric timer button inside more than 50 web apps, such as Jira, Asana and GitHub.

  7. 7

The report card

Best for tracking, billing and invoicing in one

TMetric covers the billing loop for people who charge by the hour: track the time, set rates and budgets, send the invoice. A timer button shows up inside 50+ web apps, and there are desktop apps for Windows, Mac and Linux. But the free plan stops at 2 seats with no invoicing or rates, and time off, screenshots and the QuickBooks and Jira integrations need Business at $7.50 a seat.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCProfessional is $5.83 a seat a month billed annually, or $7 monthly, and that includes billable rates, budgets and invoicing. Business, with time off, team timesheets and screenshots, is $7.50. Both land in the middle of this category rather than under it.
Free plan and trialBFree for up to 2 seats, with unlimited time tracking, clients and projects, exportable reports, the timer button in 50+ web apps, all the apps and API access. A freelancer could live there. A third person, or an invoice, means paying.
FeaturesBTimer or manual entry, tags, a timeline, idle detection and an offline mode. Professional adds rates, expenses, project budgets with alerts and client invoices; Business adds team timesheets, time off and optional screenshots and app monitoring. The job is covered.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record. The browser extension puts a timer button inside Jira, Asana and GitHub, so you start the clock where the work already is. Somebody still sets up the clients, projects and rates behind it.
Platforms and integrationsAWeb, Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, plus extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and Opera, and an API even on the free plan. The QuickBooks, Jira, Redmine and ClickUp integrations need Business.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of TMetric you could make: time tracking, reports, invoicing and tasks. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 28 of the 42 other time tracking apps we grade. It costs $69.96 a year.

What you could make

  • Time tracking, reports, invoicing and tasks: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, Jira, Asana and Trello among them, and has an API.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. TMetric’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
