Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 54 of the 79 other project management tools we grade
Trello organizes work as cards in lists on a board. An Inbox captures to-dos from email and chat tools, and a Planner syncs a calendar so cards can be scheduled into focus time. Automation and Power-Ups extend boards, while extra views such as calendar, timeline and table come with the Premium plan. Trello is an Atlassian product.
To get you started, here are 10 things to know about Trello, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The idea itself is simple: a card moves from one list to the next.
- 1
Best for simple kanban boards for small teams
Trello is cards in lists on a board, with up to 10 collaborators and 10 boards free and Standard at $5 a user a month billed annually.
- 2
Paid plans start at $5 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $5 per user / month, billed annually ($6 billed monthly).
- 3
There is a free plan
Free for up to 10 collaborators per Workspace: up to 10 boards, unlimited cards, Inbox, unlimited Power-Ups, 10MB per file and 250 automation command runs a month.
- 4
It runs on 5 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.
- 5
Boards, lists and cards
Work is laid out as cards in lists on a board. Cards are unlimited on every plan; the Free plan allows up to 10 boards per Workspace.
- 6
Inbox
Captures to-dos from email, Slack and other sources into a personal Inbox. It is included on the Free plan.
- 7
Planner
Brings a synced calendar into Trello so blocks of focus time can be set aside for work. Full Planner access starts on the Standard plan.
- 8
Refunds: 30 days
Thirty days to change your mind after upgrading a Workspace, on monthly and yearly billing alike, and that is Atlassian's written policy rather than a sales line. A Workspace admin cancels on the billing page, the paid features run to the end of the period, and no board is deleted on the way out.
- 9
A 2.8 GPA, above 54 of 79
That is against the other project management tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 10
Keep it
To replace Trello you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for simple kanban boards for small teams
Trello is cards in lists on a board, with up to 10 collaborators and 10 boards free and Standard at $5 a user a month billed annually. Calendar, Timeline, Table, Dashboard and Map views wait for Premium at $10, AI and the full Planner start on Standard, free files stop at 10MB with 250 automation runs a month, and no dependencies or time tracking are on record.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | Standard is $5 a user a month billed annually, which lands inside the cheapest quarter for project tools here, and brings unlimited boards, AI features, the full Planner and custom fields. Premium doubles that to $10 for the extra views. |
| Free plan and trial | B | A free plan a small team could really live on: up to 10 collaborators a Workspace, 10 boards, unlimited cards and unlimited Power-Ups. Not an A, because the caps do bite: 10MB a file and 250 automation command runs a month. |
| Features | C | It covers boards, lists and cards, with an Inbox catching to-dos from email and Slack and automation built in, but the job is a lighter one than this category's. Calendar, Timeline, Table and Dashboard views are Premium only, and no dependencies or time tracking are on record. |
| Ease of use | C | 4.3 from about 7,000 App Store ratings, which is middling, and our ladder wants 10,000 behind a 4.3 before it counts for more. The idea itself is simple: a card moves from one list to the next. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | The full set: web, Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, with Power-Ups linking boards to Slack, Jira, Miro, Microsoft Teams and Gmail, a public API, and an MCP server for AI tools. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Trello is for
- Fits if you plan your work as cards moving across a board, alone or in a small team
- Works for groups of up to 10 who want to share a Workspace without paying
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you want a timeline, calendar or table view, as those need Premium at $10 a user a month
- Tight if you're staying free: 10 boards, 10 collaborators, 10MB a file and 250 command runs a month
- Too light for work where one task blocks another, since no dependencies or time tracking are on record
- Skip it if you want AI features or the full Planner for free, as both start on Standard at $5
- Watch out: Enterprise's $17.50 a user is an estimate that changes with user count, and it's billed annually
Good to know
Good for
- Individuals and small teams that plan work on kanban boards
- Groups of up to 10 collaborators sharing a free Workspace
- Teams already using Jira or other Atlassian products
Worth knowing
- The Free plan is capped at 10 collaborators and 10 boards per Workspace, with 10MB per file.
- Calendar, Timeline, Table, Dashboard and Map views are only on Premium and Enterprise.
- AI features and full Planner access start on the Standard plan.
- The Enterprise price is an estimate that depends on user count, and the plan is billed annually.

Part 04 · Standing
Where it stands
Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own
54/79
Other project management tools it is graded above
Trello's GPA of 2.8 is higher than 54 of the 79 other project management tools we grade, and level with 9.
It stands best on platforms and integrations (A, above 54 of 79) and worst on features (C, above 1).
Its paid plans start at $5 a month for each person, against a middle price of $8 for the category: 13 of the 74 others that charge start lower.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.7 out of 4. 5 tools score higher and cost less.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Trello you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 54 of the 79 other project management tools we grade. It costs $60 a year.
What you could make
- Kanban boards, tasks, calendar and Gantt & timelines: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Trello’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
Part 05 · Refunds
After you pay
Getting your money back, getting out, and getting help
What happens once you have paid: whether you can get your money back, how to leave, and how to reach a person when something goes wrong. Each is graded from Trello’s own terms and help pages.
Refunds and cancelling
Good · checked Oct 18, 2026
Thirty days to change your mind after upgrading a Workspace, on monthly and yearly billing alike, and that is Atlassian's written policy rather than a sales line. A Workspace admin cancels on the billing page, the paid features run to the end of the period, and no board is deleted on the way out. Two things keep it off an A: the window covers a first purchase only, and you have to ask Atlassian for the money instead of clicking for it.
- Refund window
- 30 days
- How you cancel
- Yourself, in settings
- Getting your money back
Trello's billing article says refunds are available within the first 30 days of upgrading a Workspace. Atlassian's cloud licensing page is precise: refunds are only available within the first paid month after the trial for monthly subscriptions and within 30 days of payment for annual ones, after which none can be offered, and you contact Atlassian to request one. The cloud terms say fees are otherwise nonrefundable.
Stated on atlassian.com- How to cancel Trello
A Workspace admin cancels from the Workspace's Billing page in the web version of Trello by selecting Cancel at the bottom; the plan then ends at the close of the billing period and the Workspace becomes free. Trello says the desktop and mobile apps cannot manage subscriptions. An Enterprise plan is changed by contacting your advocate or raising a ticket, and cancelling a trial early goes through billing support.
- Open Trello in a web browser and select the Trello logo in the header
- Select the Workspace you want to cancel
- Select Billing
- Select Cancel at the bottom of the page
- What you keep afterwards
Trello says a Workspace keeps its paid features until the end of the billing period. After that the 10 most active boards stay open and the rest are closed but not deleted, boards become view-only until the Workspace is back under 10 collaborators, and data from paid features is hidden rather than deleted. Trello tells you to export your data before downgrading, or upgrade again to see it.
Stated on support.atlassian.com- Renewals
Atlassian's cloud terms say a subscription term renews automatically at its then-current rates, for a term equal to the last one or twelve months where the last was a year or more, and that either side may decline to renew by giving notice before the term ends, through account settings or by contacting support. No notice period and no reminder are stated, and no credit is given for cancelling mid-cycle.
Stated on atlassian.com
In your favour
- Thirty days to change your mind after upgrading, on monthly and yearly billing alike.
- A Workspace admin cancels on the billing page, and the plan runs to the end of the period.
- Nothing is deleted when you drop to free: the extra boards are closed, not thrown away.
- Data from paid features is hidden rather than destroyed, and comes back if you upgrade again.
Watch out for
- You have to contact Atlassian to ask for the refund; there is no button for it.
- After the 30 days, the licensing page says refunds cannot be offered at all.
- Back on free, only the 10 most active boards stay open and the rest are closed.
- Boards go view-only until the Workspace is under 10 collaborators, so export before you downgrade.
Customer support
Good · checked Oct 18, 2026
Pay for Trello and you can raise a ticket with Atlassian, which is unusually open about what that buys: 9 hours a day Monday to Friday on Standard, a first reply inside two business hours when the app is down, two business days for a simple question, and round-the-clock cover for the worst problems on Premium. No chat anywhere, phone only on Enterprise, and free Workspaces get the forum. A good B.
Ways to get help
Phone
Enterprise customers get a dedicated phone number and a dedicated senior support team. The same comparison lists phone support as not available on Standard or Premium.
Stated on confluence.atlassian.comContact form or ticket
Support requests go to Atlassian's cloud support team. The support offerings page says the people entitled to raise them are the product and site admins of Standard, Premium and Enterprise sites, and Trello's help articles point to a contact form for billing questions.
Stated on confluence.atlassian.comHelp centre

Stated on support.atlassian.comCommunity or forum

Stated on community.atlassian.com

- When people answer
Atlassian's support offerings page gives technical support hours of 9 hours a day, Monday to Friday, on Standard; on Premium, around the clock for an application-down issue, 24/5 for serious degradation and 9 hours Monday to Friday for lesser ones; and around the clock on Enterprise. Trello's pricing table words the same thing as local business hours, 24/5 and 24/7.
Stated on confluence.atlassian.com- How fast it says it replies
The same page states initial response targets by severity. On Standard it aims at 2 business hours for an application down, 6 business hours for serious degradation, 1 business day for moderate impact, 2 business days for low impact and 3 business days for how-to questions. Premium aims at 1 hour for an application down, Enterprise at 30 minutes.
Stated on confluence.atlassian.com- What depends on your plan
Trello's pricing table gives community support on Free, local business hours on Standard, 24/5 premium support on Premium and 24/7 enterprise admin support on Enterprise. Atlassian adds that support is bundled with the paid licence, that only product and site admins may raise requests, and that a dedicated senior team and a phone number come only with Enterprise.
Stated on trello.com
In your favour
- Atlassian publishes its first-reply targets by severity, which most tools never do.
- Premium buys round-the-clock cover when the app is down, not just office hours.
- The documentation and the community forum are open to everyone, free users included.
- Standard support is included in the price rather than sold as an add-on.
Watch out for
- Free Workspaces get the forum and the docs: no ticket, no person.
- Only product and site admins may raise a support request, so everyone else has to ask one of them.
- There is no live chat at all, and the phone number comes only with Enterprise.
- On Standard a low-impact question has a two-business-day target, and a how-to three.
What these two grades rest on. Read on 18 October 2026: Trello's help articles on changing or cancelling a plan and on how billing works, Atlassian's cloud licensing page with its cancellations and returns section, the Atlassian cloud terms of service, the Atlassian support offerings comparison, the Trello pricing page, Trello's documentation site and the Atlassian Community. Nobody here cancelled a plan or contacted its support. They are graded apart from the five that make the GPA. How we grade refunds and support.
