Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.0

GPA, above 0 of the 35 other journaling apps we grade

Waffle is a shared journaling app for iPhone and Android. A journal is opened to a partner, family members, friends or a therapist with an invite code, and each member writes entries and answers a daily question that the others can read. Unlimited journals, members and entries are free. Waffle Plus adds photos, video, voice notes, comments, search and PDF export, and one member's subscription upgrades the whole journal.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Waffle, taken from its own pages and our grades.

If you write at a computer, look elsewhere.

The report card

Best for a journal you write with someone else

Waffle is a shared journal for phones: invite a partner, family, friends or a therapist with a code, and everyone answers the same daily question. Unlimited journals, entries and members are free. Photos, video, voice notes, comments, search and PDF export need Waffle Plus at $14.99 a month or $9.99 a week, those prices aren't on the website, laptops aren't supported, and a journal's creator can't remove a member. If you write at a computer, look elsewhere.

ToolGPA report cardWaffleGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyDWaffle Plus is $14.99 a month, which is in the dearest tenth of this category, where the middle is $4.17, and the weekly option at $9.99 costs more again. For that you get photos, comments, search and export. One member's subscription upgrades the journal for everyone.
Free plan and trialCUnlimited journals, entries and members are free. The caps are everything else: no photos, video, voice notes, comments, read receipts, search or PDF export until somebody pays. Plus has a 7-day trial.
FeaturesCIt does the shared journal fully: invite codes, a daily question from decks matched to who you're writing with, AI prompts drawn from your entries, and on Plus media, comments, read receipts, search and export. A gap in its own FAQ: a journal's creator can't remove a member, who has to leave on their own.
Ease of useB4.6 from about 10,300 App Store ratings, under the 4.7 an A needs. Someone starts a journal, sends an invite code and everyone answers the day's question, with presets for partners, family and friends.
Platforms and integrationsCPhones only: iPhone and Android, with the FAQ saying laptops aren't supported and the App Store listing built for iPhone. No integrations at all, just a local backup option on the device.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.0

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Waffle is for

  • Fits if you and a partner want a daily check-in, including across long distance
  • Works for a family, a group of friends, or a therapy client and therapist answering one question together

Who it is not for

  • Pricey if you want photos, comments or search, at $14.99 a month or $9.99 a week for Waffle Plus
  • Skip it if you write at a laptop, as the FAQ says laptops aren't supported
  • Not for you if you want control over who's in a journal, since the creator can't remove a member
  • Watch out: Plus prices aren't on the website, and the App Store lists ten purchases, most with no billing period
  • Tight if you're staying free: no photos, video, voice notes, comments, read receipts, search or PDF export

Good to know

Good for

  • Couples, including long-distance ones, who want a shared daily check-in
  • Families and friend groups who like answering a question together
  • Therapy clients sharing day-to-day notes with a therapist between sessions

Worth knowing

  • Phone only: the FAQ says laptops are not supported, and the App Store listing is for iPhone.
  • The free plan has no photos, video, voice notes, comments, read receipts, search or PDF export.
  • A journal's creator cannot remove a member; the FAQ says members have to leave on their own.
  • Plus prices are not on the website. The App Store lists ten purchases, and only the weekly and monthly ones name a billing period.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

A journal at its plainest is dated entries of text and photos.

You could make the core of Waffle for yourself: daily notes. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. It costs $179.88 a year.

What you could make

  • Daily notes: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.

What this rests on. Waffle’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
