3.4
GPA, above 14 of the 14 other tools for selling digital products we grade
Whop is a platform for selling access to communities, courses, files, software and events, with a storefront, checkout, payouts and a marketplace called Discover. Sellers add apps such as chat, courses, forums, files and calendar bookings to each product, and developers can embed Whop's checkout through its API and SDKs. Fees are charged per transaction, with optional extras for billing, tax and payment routing.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Whop, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Building a product means picking apps such as chat or courses to add to it, rather than designing pages.

The report card
Best for selling access to paid communities
Whop sells access to communities, courses, files and software, with chat, forums and bookings you add to each product and a Discover marketplace where affiliates promote you. There's no monthly fee, just 2.7% + 30¢ a card sale. The catch is the extras, which stack: tax handling, faster payouts and a default 30% affiliate cut on Discover.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | No monthly fee: 2.7% + 30¢ a domestic card sale, so $1,000 costs $27 plus 30¢ a sale, and that is the card processing, with nothing on top. Cheaper than anything else here at this size, but not an A: tax handling adds 2% and faster payouts cost extra. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Nothing to pay until you sell, with no monthly fee and no plan to upgrade to. Each sale's card fee is the only charge, and the value grade counts that. |
| Features | B | Storefront and checkout in 195 countries, plus chat, courses with quizzes, forums, paid events, files and bookings for each product, license keys, a marketplace and affiliates. It covers the whole job. |
| Ease of use | A | 4.82 from about 58,000 App Store ratings, among the best here. Building a product means picking apps such as chat or courses to add to it, rather than designing pages. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web and iPhone, with Klarna, Afterpay, Splitit, SeQura and Venmo, an embeddable checkout and SDKs in TypeScript, Python and Ruby. No Android or desktop app is listed. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Whop is for
- Great if you sell access to a paid community with chat and courses
- Handy when you want affiliates to find you through a marketplace
- A treat if you're a developer embedding checkout and payouts in your own app
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you switch every option on, as the fee climbs to 6% + $0.30
- Not for you if buyers pay inside the iPhone app, as Apple takes 30% of purchases under $700
- Tight if you need cash fast, as an instant bank payout costs 4% + $2.50 each time
Good to know
Good for
- Creators selling paid community access with courses and chat
- Sellers who want marketplace exposure through affiliates
- Developers embedding checkout and payouts in their own app
Worth knowing
- Optional extras stack on the 2.7% + $0.30 card fee: payment routing 0.8%, billing 0.5%, tax collection 2%, or 6% + $0.30 with all on.
- Products listed on Discover are promoted by affiliates at a default 30% commission unless you change the rate.
- Purchases under $700 made in Whop's iOS app go through Apple, which takes 30%; subscriptions and web checkout avoid that fee.
- Fast payouts cost extra: instant bank deposit 4% + $2.50, crypto 5% + $1 and Venmo 5% + $2.50 per payout.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Whop is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces. It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.4 is higher than 14 of the 14 other tools for selling digital products we grade.
What you could make
- Digital downloads and online courses: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A members' space with posts, chat and events that people keep coming back to.
- Every click and sale traced back to the right partner.
- A real app for iOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, Klarna, Afterpay and Splitit among them, and has an API.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Whop’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
