Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 28 of the 51 other email apps we grade
Wino Mail is an open source mail, calendar, contacts and to-do app for Windows, started as a native replacement for the Windows Mail and Calendar apps that Microsoft deprecated. It connects Outlook, Gmail and standard IMAP accounts, keeps mail on the device by default and works offline. The app is free for up to three email accounts; a one-time Unlimited Accounts add-on removes that limit, and an optional Wino Intelligence subscription adds AI sorting, briefings and translation.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Wino Mail, taken from its own pages and our grades.
It handles Outlook, Gmail and IMAP accounts, keeps mail on your PC and works offline.

The report card
Best for a free mail and calendar app for Windows
Wino Mail is a free, open-source mail and calendar app for Windows, started to replace the Mail and Calendar apps Microsoft deprecated. It handles Outlook, Gmail and IMAP accounts, keeps mail on your PC and works offline. It runs on Windows only, the free app stops at 3 accounts, and neither add-on has a published price. The AI add-on processes your mail in the cloud with monthly caps.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | The app itself costs nothing in a category whose paid plans start around $4 a month, the lowest price of anything here. What stops it going higher is that neither add-on has a published price: the site says regional pricing appears before payment, so you can't compare before you commit. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Free for good, with no Wino Account needed: mail, calendar, contacts, to-dos and every core customization option. The only cap is 3 email accounts, which most people will never bump into, and nothing useful is held back for the paid add-on. |
| Features | B | It covers the whole job for a desktop client: Outlook, Gmail, iCloud and IMAP mail with filters, aliases and HTML templates, a calendar in four views, CardDAV contacts, a to-do mode with reminders, and offline reading, writing and search. Nothing in the listing points at a missing piece of core mail work. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record to go on, and the first thing it asks for is accounts: Outlook, Gmail or an IMAP server with its own setup page in the docs. Once they're in, swipe actions, hover actions and shortcuts are all yours to change. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | One operating system. Windows, with no macOS, Linux, mobile or web version listed, so your phone is out. Inside Windows it does talk to Outlook, Gmail, iCloud and other IMAP accounts, plus Google and CalDAV calendars. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Wino Mail is for
- Fits if you miss the Mail and Calendar apps that used to come with Windows
- Works for people with up to three Outlook, Gmail or IMAP accounts who want a free client
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want the same app on a Mac or your phone, as it runs on Windows only
- Tight if you have more than 3 email accounts, which needs the Unlimited Accounts add-on
- Not for you if you want prices up front, because the add-on prices only appear before payment
- Watch out: Wino Intelligence needs a Wino Account, processes mail in the cloud and caps use each month
Good to know
Good for
- Windows users who miss the built-in Mail and Calendar apps
- People with up to three Outlook, Gmail or IMAP accounts who want a free client
- Those who prefer open source software that keeps mail on their own PC
Worth knowing
- It runs on Windows only; the site lists no macOS, Linux, mobile or web version.
- The free app is limited to 3 email accounts. Removing the limit needs the Unlimited Accounts add-on, unless you build the app from source.
- Prices for Unlimited Accounts and Wino Intelligence are not published: the site says current regional pricing appears before payment.
- Wino Intelligence needs a Wino Account, processes the mailboxes you enable in the cloud and has monthly usage allowances.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Wino Mail you would be making an email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
Wino Mail is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could make
- Calendar, tasks and templates: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- An email client: sending, receiving, threading and searching years of mail.
- A real app for Windows. Something home-made would be a web page.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Wino Mail’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
