Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 11 of the 69 other writing tools we grade
Wordtune is an AI writing assistant from AI21 Labs that suggests other ways to phrase a word, sentence or paragraph, fixes spelling and grammar, and shifts text between casual and formal tones. It also summarizes documents, web pages and YouTube videos and can generate text that continues a draft. It runs as a web editor, as Chrome and Edge extensions and as an iPhone app, and it writes in English only.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Wordtune, taken from its own pages and our grades.
There's little to learn, mind: select some text and pick from a list of suggestions.

The report card
Best for rephrasing your English sentences
Wordtune suggests other ways to say a sentence you've selected, inside Gmail, Google Docs and other web apps. It only writes in English, and unless you pay for Unlimited at $9.99 a month billed yearly, rewrites are rationed at 10 or 30 a day. Monthly billing roughly doubles the price, the trial needs payment details, there are no refunds, and there's no Mac, Windows or Android app.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Advanced is $6.99 a month billed annually, the middle of the band for writing tools, and it's still capped at 30 rewrites a day. The plan without limits is Unlimited at $9.99. Pay monthly and both roughly double, to $13.99 and $19.99, and there are no refunds. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Basic is free with unlimited spelling corrections and grammar checks, but the main feature is rationed to caps you'll hit in an afternoon: 10 rewrites and AI suggestions a day, 3 AI summaries a month. The 3-day trial of the paid plans asks for payment details up front. |
| Features | C | It does the basics with a gap the listing names plainly: Wordtune writes in English only, and other languages are merely input to translate from. Round the rewrite list sit tone and length controls on paid plans, spelling and grammar checks, a summarizer for articles and YouTube, and sourced AI suggestions. |
| Ease of use | C | 4.42 on the App Store from 988 ratings for the iPhone app, which sits in the middle band, under the 4.5 a B needs. There's little to learn, mind: select some text and pick from a list of suggestions. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A web editor, Chrome and Edge extensions and an iPhone app, working inside Google Docs, Gmail, Slack, Outlook on the web, LinkedIn and WhatsApp Web. That list is what earns the B; there's no Mac, Windows or Android app, so an A is out. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Wordtune is for
- Fits if English isn't your first language and you want emails to sound natural
- Works for writers in Gmail or Google Docs who want rephrasing right there
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you write in anything but English, as that's the only language it writes in
- Tight if you're staying free, at 10 rewrites a day and 3 summaries a month, and Advanced still stops at 30 a day
- Pricey if you pay monthly, at $13.99 for Advanced and $19.99 for Unlimited against $6.99 and $9.99 billed annually
- Watch out: the 3-day trial needs payment details up front, and Wordtune doesn't offer refunds
- Not for you if you want a Mac, Windows or Android app, as only a web editor, extensions and an iPhone app are listed
Good to know
Good for
- Non-native English speakers polishing emails and messages
- Rephrasing sentences inside Gmail, Google Docs and other web apps
- Students and researchers who want short summaries of articles and videos
Worth knowing
- Wordtune writes in English only; other languages are supported only as input to translate into English.
- Basic stops at 10 rewrites a day and 3 summaries a month, and Advanced is still capped at 30 a day and 15 a month. Only Unlimited removes the caps.
- The site lists a web editor, Chrome and Edge extensions and an iPhone app. No Mac, Windows or Android app is listed.
- Wordtune does not offer refunds, and the 3-day trial needs payment details up front.

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Nothing Wordtune does is plain enough to make in a weekend. The 4 things listed below take a company.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 50 of the 69 other writing tools grade higher. It costs $83.88 a year.
What you could not
- Grammar checking as you type, wherever you type.
- A real app for iOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, Google Docs, Gmail and Slack among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Wordtune’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
