Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 20 of the 79 other project management tools we grade
Zenhub is a project management layer for software teams that plan their work in GitHub. It builds multi-repository boards, sprints, roadmaps and agile reports on top of GitHub issues, and a Chrome and Firefox extension puts those features inside GitHub's own interface. A free plan covers up to 50 users on two repositories, and the Enterprise plan can be self-hosted.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Zenhub, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for teams that plan their work on GitHub issues
Zenhub lays boards, sprints and roadmaps over your GitHub issues, with a browser extension that shows them inside GitHub, and Teams is $4.99 a user a month billed yearly.
- 2
Paid plans start at $4.99 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $4.99 per user / month, billed yearly.
- 3
There is a free plan
Up to 50 users, 1 workspace, 2 connected repositories and 250 issues, with sprints, planning poker, roadmaps and basic sprint reports.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web, with a browser extension too.
- 5
Boards built on GitHub issues
Zenhub syncs issues, pull requests and permissions from a connected GitHub organization and arranges them on Kanban boards that can span several repositories.
- 6
Extension for Chrome and Firefox
The browser extension places Zenhub's boards, planning poker and automations inside GitHub's interface. The same workspace is also available as a separate web app.
- 7
Sprints, estimates and planning poker
Automated sprint planning, story estimates and planning poker are included on every plan, the free one included.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 20 of 79
That is against the other project management tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Zenhub you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for teams that plan their work on GitHub issues
Zenhub lays boards, sprints and roadmaps over your GitHub issues, with a browser extension that shows them inside GitHub, and Teams is $4.99 a user a month billed yearly. It's an add-on: no GitHub, no Zenhub. The free plan stops at 2 repositories and 250 issues, Teams stops at 50 users, automations and advanced reports are Enterprise only, and there's no phone app.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | Teams is $4.99 a user a month billed yearly, inside the cheapest quarter for project tools here, covering 50 users, 50 repositories and 5,000 issues with AI labels and sprint reviews. Pay monthly and it's $7.50, and past those limits it's Enterprise at a custom price. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free for up to 50 people, but the caps land fast: 1 workspace, 2 connected repositories and 250 issues, and a working team gets through 250 issues in no time. New accounts start with a 14-day Teams trial. |
| Features | D | It needs another product to do anything: boards are made of GitHub issues, and setting up means linking a GitHub organization. On top of that it adds multi-repository boards, sprint planning, estimates, planning poker, roadmaps and velocity reports. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but there's genuinely little to set up: it's a tool inside an account you already have, syncing the issues, pull requests and permissions that are already there, and the extension draws the boards inside GitHub's own pages. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web with an extension for Chrome and Firefox, connected to GitHub and Slack, with a public API. No native mobile app is listed, though the FAQ says the web app works in a phone browser. Figma, Loom and Miro are Enterprise only. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Zenhub is for
- Fits if your team already plans its work on GitHub issues
- Works for teams of up to 50 on Teams, with 50 repositories and 5,000 issues
Who it is not for
- Skip it if your work isn't on GitHub, because the boards are made of GitHub issues
- Tight if you're staying free, with 1 workspace, 2 repositories and 250 issues
- Pricey if you pass 50 users or 5,000 issues, or need automations, advanced reports or Figma, Loom and Miro, all Enterprise at a custom price
- Not for you if you want a phone app, as no native mobile app is listed, and the extension is Chrome and Firefox only
Good to know
Good for
- Software teams that plan their work directly on GitHub issues
- Small teams: the free plan allows up to 50 users on 2 repositories
- Organizations that need project tooling deployed on their own servers
Worth knowing
- Zenhub works on top of GitHub: setting up means linking a GitHub organization, and boards are made of GitHub issues.
- The Free plan is limited to 1 workspace, 2 connected repositories and 250 issues.
- Teams stops at 50 users, 50 repositories and 5,000 issues; workspace automations, advanced reporting and Figma, Loom and Miro integrations are Enterprise only.
- No native mobile app is listed: the FAQ says the web app also works in mobile browsers, and the extension supports Chrome and Firefox.

Part 04 · Standing
Where it stands
Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own
20/79
Other project management tools it is graded above
Zenhub's GPA of 2.4 is higher than 20 of the 79 other project management tools we grade, and level with 21.
It stands best on ease of use (B, above 65 of 79) and worst on features (D, above 0).
Its paid plans start at $4.99 a month for each person, against a middle price of $8 for the category: 12 of the 74 others that charge start lower.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.3 out of 4. 9 tools score higher and cost less.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Zenhub you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 38 of the 79 other project management tools grade higher. It costs $59.88 a year.
What you could make
- Issue tracking, kanban boards and reports: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.
What this rests on. Zenhub’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
