Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 11 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools we grade

Zight is a visual communication tool for capturing screen recordings, annotated screenshots and GIFs and sharing each one as a link. A Request Video link lets a customer or colleague record their screen and send it back without an account or an install. Paid plans add AI that transcribes recordings and turns them into summaries and step-by-step guides, and a meeting recorder that returns notes and action items.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Zight, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The link is on your clipboard when you stop recording, and whoever gets a Request Video link needs no account.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for support teams trading screen recordings with customers

Zight turns a screen recording, a marked-up screenshot or a GIF into a link copied to your clipboard, and its Request Video link lets a customer record their screen for you with no account.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $9.95 a month for each person

As its pricing page puts it: $9.95 per user / month, billed annually ($12.95 billed monthly).

  3. 3

  4. 4

    It runs on 4 platforms

macOS, Windows, iOS and Web, with a browser extension too.

  5. 5

    Screen and webcam recording

Record the screen, the webcam or both from the Mac or Windows app or the Chrome extension. The link to the finished recording is copied to the clipboard automatically.

  6. 6

    Screenshots and annotation

Capture the visible area or a scrolling page and mark it up with shapes, arrows, text and stickers. Blur and redaction need a paid plan.

  7. 7

    Request Video links

Send a link that lets anyone record their screen and return it with no account or install. Share includes 5 requests a month, Create 10 and Collaborate 50.

  8. 8

That is against the other screen recording and video tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

The report card

Best for support teams trading screen recordings with customers

Zight turns a screen recording, a marked-up screenshot or a GIF into a link copied to your clipboard, and its Request Video link lets a customer record their screen for you with no account. But the free plan stops at 5-minute, 720p recordings, 1 GB and your last 50 captures, Zendesk and Intercom hookups are a paid add-on, transcription starts on Create, and there's no Android app.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCCreate is $9.95 per user a month billed annually, a whisker under this category's $10 middle, for unlimited 4K recording, transcription and 5 GB. Zendesk, Intercom, Jira and the other premium integrations are a paid add-on below Scale.
Free plan and trialCThe Share plan gives you annotated screenshots, 15-second GIFs and 5 Video Requests a month free. But recordings stop at 5 minutes and 720p, storage at 1 GB, and you can only reach your last 50 captures.
FeaturesCIt does the capture-and-share job completely: recordings, scrolling screenshots, GIFs, Request Video links, a meeting recorder, transcription in 50+ languages. That's a smaller job than video proper, and blur, captions and transcription all start on Create.
Ease of useB4.5 from 1,214 App Store ratings. The link is on your clipboard when you stop recording, and whoever gets a Request Video link needs no account.
Platforms and integrationsBMac, Windows, a Chrome extension, the web and an iPhone app, connecting to Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, Jira and Notion. The phone app is iOS only, with nothing for Android, which caps it at a B.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Zight is for

  • Fits if you answer support tickets and want to reply with a short recording
  • Works for getting a screen recording back from a customer who won't install anything

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're staying free: recordings stop at 5 minutes and 720p, with 1 GB and only your last 50 captures
  • Pricey if you need Zendesk, Intercom or Jira hooked up, since premium integrations are a paid add-on below Scale
  • Watch out: transcription, captions and blur start on Create, and unlimited AI actions on Collaborate at $12 a user
  • Skip it if your phone is an Android, because the mobile app is iOS only
  • Skip it if you need SSO, SCIM or HIPAA on a small team, as those need Scale, for 10 or more people

Good to know

Good for

  • Support and success teams answering tickets with a quick recording
  • Getting a screen recording back from a customer who installs nothing
  • Teams that turn walkthrough videos into written step-by-step guides

Worth knowing

  • The free Share plan limits recordings to 5 minutes at up to 720p, with 1 GB of storage and only the last 50 captures.
  • Transcription, captions and blur start on Create, and unlimited AI summaries and Smart Actions on Collaborate.
  • Zendesk, Intercom, Jira, Notion and other premium integrations are a paid add-on below the Scale plan.
  • SCIM, HIPAA compliance and SSO beyond Google sign-in need Scale; the desktop apps cover Windows and Mac and the mobile app is iOS only.

Zight's GPA of 2.4 is higher than 11 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools we grade, and level with 16.

It stands best on ease of use (B, above 20 of 52) and worst on features (C, above 0).

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Zight you would be making a video editor. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 25 of the 52 other screen recording and video tools grade higher. It costs $119.40 a year.

What you could not

  • A video editor.
  • A bot that joins your calls and turns the talk into notes.
  • Recording the screen with its sound, and somewhere to keep the video.
  • Capture tools hooked into the operating system.
  • Speech turned into text you can trust.
  • Storing and serving files for other people.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, Slack, Microsoft Teams and Gmail among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.

What this rests on. Zight’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
