The best 1Password alternatives in 2026

1Password has no free plan, and its lowest prices last only for a new customer's first year. Of these four alternatives, three have free plans and one can run on your own server.

Updated Oct 4, 2026 · 4 tools · How we pick

The main reason people look past 1Password is that it has no free plan: once the 14-day trial ends, a paid subscription is needed. The listed prices are for annual billing, and the lowest ones are introductory. New customers pay $2.99 a month for Individual and $4.49 for Families in the first year; the regular prices are $3.99 and $5.99.

Work use has its own threshold. Single sign-on integration starts at the Business plan, at $8.99 per user a month billed annually, and Enterprise pricing is by quote only. So the alternatives are worth a look if you want to pay nothing, pay less for a household, or get single sign-on at a lower per-user price.

Three of the four managers below have a free plan, and two are open source. Before you switch, weigh what 1Password does well: apps for Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, shared vaults for families and teams, and a flat-rate Teams Starter Pack for 10 members. The order runs from the closest all-round substitute to the most specialized.

    Bitwarden

Best free alternativeOpen-source password manager with a free plan and self-hosting

Bitwarden answers 1Password's biggest gap directly: its free plan stores unlimited logins and passkeys on unlimited devices. Its personal plans cost less too. Premium is $1.65 a month billed annually ($19.80 a year), and Families covers up to 6 users for $3.99 a month, against $5.99 for 5 people at 1Password. It is open source, can be self-hosted, and offers single sign-on on its Enterprise plan at $6 per user a month billed annually.

Worth knowing: The free plan has no file attachments, integrated authenticator or emergency access, and for a team of 7 to 10, 1Password's flat $24.95 Starter Pack costs less than Bitwarden Teams at $4 per user.

    Proton Pass

Best for privacy and email aliasesEnd-to-end encrypted password manager with email aliases

Proton Pass's free plan covers unlimited logins on unlimited devices, passkeys, and alerts for weak and reused passwords. Its signature feature is the hide-my-email alias, an address to hand out at sign-up in place of your real one: 10 on the free plan and unlimited on Pass Plus. It is open source and end-to-end encrypted. Pass Plus is $2.99 a month billed every 12 months ($35.88), against 1Password's regular $3.99, and Pass Family covers up to 6 users for $4.99 a month on the same terms.

Worth knowing: The free plan stops at 2 vaults and 10 aliases, the authenticator, vault sharing and file attachments need Pass Plus, and there is no free trial, only a 30-day money-back guarantee.

    NordPass

NordPass gives you more room to look before paying. There is a free plan that stores, generates and autofills passwords and passkeys, and a third-party review reports a 30-day trial of Premium features for new accounts with no card required, against 1Password's 14 days. Like 1Password, it has apps for Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android. Its features include a Data Breach Scanner, email masking and an authenticator for one-time codes.

Worth knowing: A third-party review reports that the free plan lacks weak-password detection and breach scanning, the recorded prices are US App Store rates, and the $1.39 web price is an introductory 2-year offer.

    Dashlane

Dashlane is not the cheaper option: Premium is $5.42 a month billed annually against 1Password's $3.99, and it has no free plan either. What it adds is a bundle. Premium includes a VPN, AI-based scam protection and Dark Web Monitoring, and the Friends & Family plan covers 10 accounts for $8.13 a month billed annually, twice the 5 that 1Password Families covers. For companies, Omnix Password Management includes SSO and SCIM integrations at $8 per user a month billed annually.

Worth knowing: Dashlane is listed for the web, iOS, Android and as a browser extension, where 1Password also has Mac, Windows and Linux apps, and on Friends & Family only the plan manager gets the VPN.

How to choose

If the missing free plan is the problem

Bitwarden and Proton Pass both store unlimited logins on unlimited devices for free. Bitwarden's free plan leaves out the authenticator and file attachments; Proton Pass's is limited to 2 vaults and 10 aliases but includes alerts for weak and reused passwords. NordPass also has a free plan. Dashlane, like 1Password, offers only a 14-day trial.

If you are paying for a household

1Password Families covers 5 people for $5.99 a month billed annually. Bitwarden Families covers up to 6 users for $3.99, Proton Pass Family up to 6 for $4.99 and Dashlane Friends & Family 10 accounts for $8.13, each a monthly rate on yearly billing.

If you need it for a team

1Password's Teams Starter Pack is a flat $24.95 a month for 10 members, billed annually. For 7 to 10 people that is less than Bitwarden Teams at $4 per user a month; below 7, Bitwarden costs less. For single sign-on, 1Password needs Business at $8.99 per user a month, Bitwarden needs Enterprise at $6 and Dashlane's Omnix Password Management is $8, all billed annually.

If you want open source or your own server

Bitwarden and Proton Pass are open source. Bitwarden can also be deployed on premises or in a private cloud instead of Bitwarden's own, and Families and Enterprise organizations can be moved to a self-hosted server.
